Director Sollima may have a rather curious view of geopolitics, and may even seem to justify the angle from which Donald Trump seems to see it, through the prism of the Mexico border, but halfway through, in a subversion that only dawns you gradually, Day of the Soldado ends up being a Mexican film. And about the mess that a myopic, hasty America tends to leave in its wake.

To achieve even a fraction of what the first movie did would be asking for too much. But in its own creaky way – despite the pacing issues and large sections of inactivity – Soldado is a relevant, timely thriller featuring a talented cast in fine form.

Nevertheless, the performances by Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro are top notch. Brolin plays the clay-cold Graver with ease, while del Toro builds on the legend of his character and his ability to be Mexico’s version of Léon: The Professional. While he’s not dodging bullets, he can pull off the most outrageous feats with ease. If you enjoy the thrill of gun fights and larger-than-life characters, Sicario 2 can be an engaging experience. Just don’t expect it to make too much sense.

Let us get the basics out of the way – does Sicario: Day of the Soldado work as an effective sequel? The answer is a resounding yes. Does the film improve on the original in any way – no it does not but it is still a dark and vastly entertaining ride. It is out in theatres today – so should you watch it? Of course, yes. Soldado tells a complete story on its own and the final 10 minutes are the most absorbing closing moments of a film so far this year but the film does position itself as a midpoint in a trilogy before the credits roll
