Unlike the case with Shoojit and Juhi’s previous collaborations Vicky Donor and Piku, the mood in October is decidedly somber; there’s very little to laugh about. Be warned the overwhelming sadness will take a piece out of you. If you allow it though it has the power to change the way you look at love and life.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five.

What happens between them is tragic and tender and like life, accidental. There is no explanation and no drama either. The sadness unfolds gently until it has engulfed you entirely. That is the beauty of this film.Let me warn you that October is an acquired taste. Director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chaturvedi aren’t going for plot here. When you step in, forget about their previous collaborations – Vicky Donor and Piku. You won’t find the laughs or those full-bodied characters like Beeji from Vicky Donor or Budhan from Piku. They have been replaced by a meditative tonality.

October is indeed the sort of film that demands patience, but does not fail to reward it in ample measure. It is difficult to miss its uplifting soul. Impressively understated in its genteel exploration of loss and longing, it is exquisitely crafted.October gets four stars, not five, because the film, like life, isn’t perfect. But, like life again, it is achingly beautiful when at its best. Anything less would be too little for this singularly wondrous film.

Through October, you see glimpses of Dan, but you can also see the effort showing: Dhawan’s ability to fully disappear into a part is still a work-in-progress. I liked much of the film, but didn’t fall in love with it.

On the whole, OCTOBER is an offbeat and a sensitive film which rests on a wafer thin plot and suffers from a slow pace. The movie is sure to win critical acclaim for Varun Dhawan’s outstanding performance but has hardly anything for the masses. At the box office, the movie will appeal to a niche section of the multiplex going audience.

‘October’ is not bound by Indian sensibility aloneimdb; it is a story that will possibly enjoy a much wider appeal across international audiences. For a Bollywood fan seeking escapist cinema, the laid-back pace might be a deterrent. In love and relationships, a lot remains unsaid and undefined. What can’t find its way into words, will find a way to flow out. Let it. The fragrant memory of Shiuli (the Bengali name for Night Jasmine) and Dan’s unconditional love story will linger long after. Go, take it all in.

Some films are a breeze, others are a balm. October belongs to the latter category. It talks of a life situation none of us ever want to be in, but you never know what cards you get dealt with.If you’re the sort who doesn’t give up on life easily, you should watch October. It’s got passion and more importantly, it’s got soul.

The movie hall was divided when it came to the reviews of the film. While some thought this was Varun at his best, few complained about it being a medical documentary. For me, the movie has its heart in the right place with a perfect emotional quotient. Kudos to the team for not going overboard with melodramatic scenes. Maybe the movie is not for everybody. But it is a Varun Dhawan- Shoojit Sircar collaboration you can’t afford to miss. .

Barring riveting performances from its principal actors and nuggets of wry humour, this drama — with tragic undertones — crawls at a mind-numbing pace. It’s one of those films that takes pride in being pretentious, arty and hyperbolic. October may have worked wonderfully as a short story, but it made for a laborious watch when translated on the big screen.

October Story:
Dan (Varun DHawan) is living the life of any carefree 21 year old, revolving around a bunch of friends and fellow hotel interns who feed off each other’s everyday moments, their ups and downs. Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) is one such intern at the same hotel, who at times is at a receiving end of Dan’s audaciousness. Life goes on until a sudden turn of events smashes Dan and Shiuli’s lives together, into a bond that’s unlike any 21 year olds. The emotional connection between them goes through a metamorphoses that brings out a form of love that’s unlike any other eventually leading to an internal awakening. October is not a Love Story, but rather a story about love.
