Julie 2 Movie Review

Even though the story is set in current times, the narrative plays out like a 90s masala flick. The dialogues must have been written to induce wolf-whistles but are cringeworthy to say the least. The dance numbers are also reminiscent of the by-gone era. Meanwhile, the camera constantly lingers on the leading lady’s bosom only to titillate the audience. Ravi Kishan in the role of a Telugu superstar is unintentionally funny and one wonders, why a gifted actor like Pankaj Tripathi who has delivered stirring performances this year even agreed to be a part of this film. Give Julie 2 a miss, you won’t be missing much.

The question isn’t whether Julie 2 has any potential of making waves anywhere at all. The most mystifying aspect of this film is the presence of Pankaj Tripathi. What is he doing here? That question would be directed at anyone who ventures anywhere near a screen playing Julie 2. Stay away.

In between bizarre and shocking, Raai Laxmi keeps gyrating in body-hugging suits and shiny bikinis. She also dances on a song titled ‘Malasina (or Mala Sinha!) Dikhayegi Filmy Dance’. She oohs and aahs, even unhooks her bra twice or thrice, to make it work, but all in vain. But you know what seals the deal for Julie 2? It’s when Aditya Srivastava whispers, “Thanks for sharing Julie’s story.” Yeah, right. Zero star..

Julie 2 is about this “compromise” – the dark side of the world of glitz and glamour. But if you thought this film was a hard-hitting drama, a la Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, you were wrong. This is an erotic thriller, complete with a murder attempt which, despite willing suspension of disbelief, is completely implausible.Do yourselves a favour, give Julie 2 a miss.

Anyway in the year of the exposes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and more, the behind-the-sins look at Bollywood, would seem to have an unplanned relevance. Does it? Don’t even ask. The screenplay or whatever there is of it, is a drizzle of melodramatic cliches, those casting ouch rites, body display ops, a conspiracy theory of sorts and threats of an acid attack.Unsolicited suggestion: stay in bed.
