There’s no denying that The BFG is brimming with earnestness, but while it’s visually impressive and occasionally gripping it leaves you feeling a bit cold in the end. I came out feeling that an opportunity had been lost. It’s far from one of Spielberg’s unmissable gems. I’m going with two out of five.

Steven Spielberg, the master storyteller weaves his magic once again and transports you to a world of fantasy that pleases the child in you. An enchanting tale on a chance companionship between an unlikely pairing has never been so riveting. This heartwarming tale of friendship stays true to Spielberg’s standard of excellence and vivid imagination. He manages to recreate the E.T magic, thanks to a similar moving storyline and an endearing background score. The kids will love it and so will you.

One of the highlights of The BFG is Penelope Wilton in the role of the Queen of England who, with her trio of Corgis, significantly enhances the entertainment quotient. The BFG has failed at the US box office but, thanks to its British story set in England, is faring infinitely better in the UK. Will the Hindi version (and the Tamil and Telugu ones as well) augment the film’s collections in India? It probably will. There can be no denying that The BFG is a captivating family entertainer that delivers bushels of old world enchantment. Don’t miss it.

So despite all his successes, including this film, it’s still a mystery why we have seemingly made some sort of collective pact, and turned our backs on one of the greatest filmmakers to have ever lived. We’ve discussed and debated him, his movies and his legacy. We’ve investigated the failure (commercially) of this film. We’ve admired his storytelling, which remains as fresh as it has always been – even after all these years. There is no clear answer. So, after careful thought, I am left with just one conclusion: We don’t deserve Steven Spielberg.

. The BFG is a winsome tale from Roald Dahl, a writer who hardly went in for easy, simple pleasures, even in his children’s tales. Spielberg, on the other hand, is a director whose heart lies in such delights. The two meet here to bring us a film that is true to Dahl’s story, but Spielberg’s spirit. The Big Friendly Giant never seemed friendlier. However, in what is the film’s failing, rather than give us more of those, Spielberg is content to let The BFG gently float along to its known end. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when one first looked out that window, the world seemed not just darker, but also greyer.
