It is director Ajay Chandhok’s premise that saves the film from tripping over into the so-bad-that-it-is-good zone. Probably it had an interesting idea but the lack of sharp writing teamed with underwhelming performances, restricts it to being shoddy.Never soaring above being an outlandish vanity project for Acharya, it offers nothing more than a few lame laughs and garishly set-up songs. It won’t be the worst thing to miss it.

The only times Hey Bro comes alive is when its bevy of guest stars, including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh, Prabhudheva and Amitabh Bachchan, show up for their cameos, offering brief respite and lifting you out of your by-then-comatose state. At all other times, it is an excruciating slog. Perhaps it’s time for Acharya to return to choreography.

I wish it had resulted in something substantial, instead of yet another typically kitschy homage to a formula I’m quite sick of. Telling our filmmakers to move on from the bastardization of ’90s masala is a task, steeper than convincing a cricket fan to move on from Sachin Tendulkar.

Nitz ‘N’ Sony’s music doesn’t have a lasting effect. ‘DJ’ is the best song of the lot. ‘Birju’ is shown before the end credits but by then, viewers have already lost interest. Amar Mohile’s background score is typically filmy. M Salim’s cliched story and poor screenplay fails. Even the dialogues don’t hit the mark. The writing is amateurish and juvenile and would have worked in the 90s. But in today’s times, even kids won’t appreciate such kind of outdated humour. Director Ajay Chandhok who has films like CHATUR SINGH TWO STAR, NEHLLE PE DEHLLA etc to his credit does an average job. There’s little he could have done anyways when the script itself is so weak and cliched. On the whole, HEY BRO is disappointing and can be skipped.
