Super Nani Hindi Movie Review
If I had a swig of Scotch for each time someone tells Rekha that she belongs in the kitchen, I’d be very drunk watching Super Nani. Come to think of it, that just might be the ideal condition under which to take in this tacky, unintentionally hilarious film that seems to have shown up roughly 30 years after its expiration date. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five. Sadly the film squanders the talent of its very watchable leading lady who deserves so much better than this drivel.

A progressive thought on women’s empowerment is presented in the most regressive movie plot in Super Nani. Obviously, director Indra Kumar (who has previously given us hits like Dil, Beta, Raja, Ishq, Grand Masti) is stuck in a time warp. One can say that India’s self-styled Greta Garbo is a frog in the well. She obviously hasn’t seen English Vinglish and Queen during her Parliament break.

SUPER NANI not only marks the return of Rekha, but also the return of director Indra Kumar to his family drama genre after films like DIL, BETA, etc… With SUPER NANI, he has tried to visit the eras of the late eighties and nineties where morals, values, family and traditions were the key words. Since the film is in the hands of such an experienced director, it doesn’t lose its momentum, except for the song and dance sequences, which could have been shot in tune with today’s time and age. On the whole, SUPER NANI is a wholesome family fare, which can be watched once… only for Rekha.

A preachy and mawkish drama about a woman neglected, scorned and tormented by her own oafish family, Super Nani makes its pro-women’s empowerment statement with the finesse of a bulldozer run amok.Super Nani takes upwards of two hours to articulate something that all those weaned on Bollywood potboilers have known for ages. While doing so, it ratchets the decibel levels up to breaking point.Rarely has so much noise on a film soundtrack added up to so little. To put it simply, Super Nani is a super bore.

How regressive can you get? Are these ‘traditional’ values that we need to topline? It is supremely ironical that a film making fun of ‘saas-bahu’ serials (yes, it tries) shoves exactly those sentiments down our throat. And even more so when you call your leading lady Bharati. We can do without this creaky idea of Mrs India, thank you.

Bollywood’s super nani (read: granny) uses only love (a whole lot of it) to reform her rowdy husband and highly obnoxious kids. While there’s no doubt that director Indra Kumar made ‘Super Nani’ with good intentions, he’s unable to translate it effectively. What he leaves us with is an excruciating headache, only because all his characters are busy screeching their lines in a drama that appears heavily influenced by Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini’s ‘Baghbaan’ and Bollywood of the ’60s, when social dramas made great cinema.

Super Nani despite a lot of really funny scenes is a disaster to venture into. A wrong plot from the word go, and a pastiche of Ekta Kapoor’s brand of brain-damaging serials, this film is a full blown gyaan session on moral values. If you manage to save your hearing ability despite the high decibels of screeching females in the film (which will pierce through your ear drums), there is one dreadful film to bear. It’s a kitschy version of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi meets Khoon Bhari Maang.
