The Shaukeens  Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

I’m going with two out of five for ‘The Shaukeens’. There are the odd moments of inspired humor – all crude – between the three senior actors, but for the most part they’re wasted.

On the whole, The Shaukeens falls short of expectations as the subject had far more potential. It is not half as funny and entertaining as the story promises and it will, therefore, not be able to prove its worth at the box-office. Losing.

Abhishek Sharma’s redux of Basu Chatterji’s ‘Shaukeen’ is contemporized to feed the fetish of the FB generation (yeah, even the oldies click ‘selfies’). The original stays far superior, but this one does have plenty of ‘LOL’ moments, backed with comical performances. Some of the most uproarious ones coming from Akshay’s self-parody of his own filmi career

Light-hearted, humorous and a complete rib tickling ride, THE SHAUKEENS manages to keep you entertained all throughout. The script, which is a tad different from its 80s counterpart, has enough punch lines to keep you gripped till the end. The second half, however, has a lot more of those fun moments that will keep the smile constant on your face. The antiques, the quirks though resemble the original, they have been very aptly adapted to the contemporary times. On the whole, THE SHAUKEENS is a full on Bollywood entertainer that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Whenever Akshay appears on screen, The Shaukeens transforms into another movie — one that’s substantially more comic, cheeky and winsome — it’s the one I enjoyed the most, it’s the one I wished I had come to see.Even though there’s only 15-20 minutes of him in this 124-minutes long comedy, the star (and his chart of expressions) emerges as its undisputed scene-stealer.

The trouble with The Shaukeens is that both the characters and the film as a whole hit all the wrong buttons in a bid to generate mirth.Akshay Kumar, who also doubles up as the narrator, is the only one in the cast who seems to have had a certain degree of genuine fun. The rest merely go through the motions. The leading lady of The Shaukeens ditches her boyfriend because, in her words, “he made fun of my creation and called it stupid and obnoxious”. That is it: those are the very adjectives that would best describe this unfunny, eminently avoidable film.

It is Akshay Kumar, playing himself, or rather a superstar like himself with a thing for alcohol and a sudden yen for actorly respectability via a National award, who is the best part of the film. And how much crassness can be stuffed into a film? After its third mention, I stopped counting the times ‘tharki’ and ‘buddhas’ were said in the same breath.

The Shaukeens was promised to be a film as cute as the original but sadly, it’s just a mundanely flat and an extremely dull film. With only Akshay delivering the limited laughs of the film. Even with Akshay’s effortless humor, the film couldn’t score up to be part good. Just because you are getting bored at home, don’t go for this because then you’ll just be paying to get bored.

  1. This film is getting more and more unavoidable. I am waiting to see it…..seems to be a fantastic, fun film

  2. Considering the incredible performance of the oldies, trendy music and other positive reviews read more at justbollywood.in

  3. The film is getting all positive reviews from the public. The audiences seem to be liking it. Read the comments below the reviews of these reviewers. 90 % of educated audiences is liking this film even if the reviewers are giving bad review. So a super success is expected.

  4. The Shaukeens, is another offing in the series of remakes being churned out these days albeit this one stands nowhere close and falls flat when compared to the original Shaukeen ( 1982 ). Where as the storyline of Shaukeen ( 1982 ) was genuinely funny with humor quotient flowing in regularly along with the narrative, in the remake they have tried hard to inject the humor which works only in parts and looks forced. A bad day for comedy! [1.5/5]

Indian men are trained to read between the lines in a way best suited for their ambitions, especially if it has anything to do with women & sex. If a girl throws a generous smile at you, there’s a definite ‘hidden chance’ there to try your dirty luck.

So, when a free-spirited girl living at her own says she will do anything to meet her Bollywood-crush Akshay Kumar, it is more than enough ‘signal’ for 3 true Indian-at-heart, lecherously sleazy old men to run a cut-throat competition between them. Obviously, the girl was nowhere near the ‘understood’ connotation of her enthusiastic announcement and one of the contestants could only get a peck on his bald head and the worth-dying for title of ‘Rockstor’ in return. In the very next scene, he’s seen sharing the all made-up juicy stories of his false-success in the act and getting paid with what she has promised. Finding it funny? Shameful, I would say!

TERE BIN LADEN fame Abhishek Sharma returns with remaking Basu Chatterji’s cutely titillating comedy SHAUKEEN. The new version is called THE SHAUKEENS and the Utpal Dutt-Ashok Kumar-A K Hangal trio is replaced with Anupam Kher-Annu Kapoor & Piyush Mishra. Undeniably, the cuteness is killed by the crudeness and the cheap sex-humor.

Story revolves around three aging licentious, lusty and sex-starving men from Delhi hitting girls of all ages around them. Lali [Anupam Kher] has a wife at home, clearly disinterested in sex and busy ensuring her place in heaven with heavy religious duties. Pinky [Piyush Mishra] is a masala-king having no spices in his life as his wife had already passed away. KD [Annu Kapoor] is a wild-untamable bachelor by choice. Together they plan a trip to Mauritius meant to calm their guilty pleasures and to their best; it is a gipsy-sexy-carefree girl Ahana [Lisa Haydon] who welcomes them as the caretaker of their rented accommodation.

Keeping these 3 extensively indecent, strong-minded & unshakable filthy men’s intentions in mind, I felt good for other girls on the beaches of Mauritius as they looked only focused to one. Film constantly carries scenes of forcefully hugging & caressing the girl and even literally begging her to wear bikni in one particular scene. Following the current statistics of rise in eve-teasing & sexual harassment of women in India, these men tick all the boxes to be considered for serious sentence but here, they are not only calculated funny but also deliberately get blessed with stupid justification of their insufferable behavior- the loneliness and a good harmless heart within. How ridiculous!

Thank God, the producer is here to save some of his film. Akshay Kumar plays himself and intrepidly jokes on himself ranging from doing same things in every film of his, being compared with wooden furniture in terms of his acting ability [Heartless Critics, I say] and his ‘not really’ but witty wish to win national awards someday. His tracks in the film are similarly intertwined like any parallel comedy tracks in South Indian Masala entertainers. On the performances, Annu Kapoor plays it cool and the most confident about his part. Piyush Mishra shows faith on his theatrics more. Anupam Kher is hammy for the most.

At the end, THE SHAUKEENS dies a regrettable death despite having promising names like Tigmanshu Dhulia as the writer and Abhishek Sharma as the director. Things do get worse on a bad day. It is one such for many, including the viewers and the reviewers. Avoid it! [1.5/5]

  6. The Shaukeens is a laugh riot. The movie is a naughty entertainer. All the three old men; Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Piyush Mishra are fantastic. Lisa Haydon has played the bohemian, earth child Aahana with
aplomb. And Akshay Kumar is just unbelievably outstanding as the drunk superstar Akshay Kumar..
The music is fun and apt. The songs Manali Trance, Alchoholic and Meherbani are superbly choreographed and sung. Manali Trance is such a delight as it captures the spirit or trance music and rave parties. The cinematography is splendid. The editing is okay. The direction of Abhikesh Sharma is just right.
On the whole this is a fun movie ably adapted to modern times from the old Shaukeen. I give this movie four stars.

  7. Movie reviwers r oldies
    new generation wil like it
    fantastic comedy
don't measure the film on moral biases enjoy it with popcorn
all movie reviewrs from big newspapers should quit their job com e on ppl who wil believe u if u fal short movie is making great collections,so ewwww for ur biasful reviews

  8. The Shaukeens, directed by ‘Tere Bin Laden’ fame Abhishek Sharma, narrates the story of three old lonely men not satisfied with their sexual lives.

Three friends Laali (Anupam Kher), a shoe manufacturer, Pinky (Piyush Mishra), the ‘Catch-Masala king’, and KD (Annu Kapoor), a social worker, lust for women because of lack of excitement in their lives. After many unsuccessful events of getting a woman in Delhi, the trio head towards Mauritius where they fall for their young and sexy landlady Aahana (Lisa Haydon). Aahana happens to be a big fan of the actor Akshay Kumar and proposes to do anything for the man who makes her meet Akshay. The three men try every possible thing to make her meet Akshay so that they could get Aahana’s love. What follows is a series of comic events which disturb the lives of these three men.

The Shaukeens proposes to be a comic ride offering some witty and adult humor. The film, clearly, is made for a different set of audiences who can handle such humor. It tries its best to keep you entertained for those 130 odd minutes.

The biggest problem, though, with Abhishek Sharma’s ‘The Shaukeens’ is that it is only good in parts. The story seems to be too stretched sometimes.

The trio Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra does a commendable job to tickle your bones. The punches being natural and on the spot! Special mention for Annu Kapoor who steals the show among the three. Lisa Haydon is decent. Akshay Kumar is natural.

Not much of you would like ‘The Shaukeens’ but it is worth a try in the world of too mainstream hindi cinema. A decent time pass!
