Fugly Movie Reviews

“Yeh Fugly Fugly kya hai?” goes the title song of director Kabir Sadanand’s muddled film. It’s also a question you ask yourself repeatedly as you leave the cinema after a viewing, still baffled by the wildly inconsistent narrative. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for ‘Fugly’. In the end it’s neither thrilling nor stirring. Just a wasted opportunity.

FUGLY is not the standard Bollywoodish fare that looks at life through rose-tinted glasses. Unlike films of its ilk, which tend to get dark, gory and predictable after a point, Kabir Sadanand smartly uses sub-plots and characters so that the film doesn’t steer into the foreseeable zone. In addition, Kabir invests in drama and the emotional bond amongst friends to make the proceedings captivating, but at the same time, makes the road back from hell compelling and lifelike. On the whole, FUGLY is relatable that portrays several episodes that mirror the realities and the problems the youth encounter in the present times. A decent entertainer!

Rahul Handa’s story begins with an intriguing suicide attempt and at least until interval, director Kabir Sadanand manages to keep you hooked. But post-interval, Fugly becomes entirely logic-free. Now that’s what I call Fugly. Despite the good intentions, this one is a misguided mess. I’m going with two stars.

Although not an inherent flaw, there is another thing which could irritate a section of the youth audience: the film has been promoted as a fun, happy and youthful drama – and this, right from the young feel of the title, in slang English, to the songs to the trailers etc. – but what the film actually is is a very serious issue-based drama. On the whole, Fugly is a disappointing and an ordinary fare with very little entertainment value. It has some chance in the big cities only because of the youthful appeal of its title and music. Its low budget is its biggest plus point.

F*ugly’s determination to be off-the-wall makes it fall flat. The film gets overburdened trying to capture every Delhi cliche, from Parliament to Paharganj, and show how deep the city’s ugliness has seeped. The story has its moments. However, in trying to present an uber-cool tale, the acting is overlooked and inconsistent. but the direction fails to fuse together a powerful, coherent film, the distracted screen efforts unaided by forgettable music. The result is like a soggy Delhi chaat where potentially spicy ingredients make a sorry mess. As F*ugly would phrase it, quite a f*waste.

Take a dash of Dil Chahta Hai. Throw in liberal doses of Shaitan, add several tablespoonfuls of Fukrey, with a climactic heap of Rang De Basanti on top. Meticulously take out all the actors, all the finesse, every smart and clever bone. Throw it in a blender and then water it down till it’s not just an offensively bad film but a defiantly tacky one, a truly, truly cheap concoction that exists only to make you sick.

If positive intent were enough to help a youth-centric movie pass muster, then Fugly could, at a stretch, be regarded as passably decent two-and-a-quarter hours of entertainment. But marred by pedestrian and confused execution, the film makes more noise than sense. It is not as if the members of the cast seek to pass off raving and ranting as acting. It is the ear-splitting background score that gets one’s goat. .Fugly simply can’t help it.

Four friends, one life-changing incident, in Jat-dominated Delhi. ‘F*UGLY* follows the footsteps of the films which take the national capital, throw in a bunch of youngsters, mix ‘em with a mad, bad character, and serve. The result isn’t exactly palatable.‘F*UGLY* begins with a hint of promise, and it could have gone down some paths less travelled. But it meanders, and loses its way.

For film critics, movies like Fugly is nothing less than traumatic. A bunch of haywire newbies find themselves lost in a plot that is ridiculous and lame which kills you by the end. If by God’s grace you survive the slang talk and sleaze show, the climax murders you. In a typical Rang De Basanti weds Highway climax done in all seriousness, there is no scope to laugh at it either. It is a plain, flat and bad film that must be avoided under every circumstance.

With a clincher of a curtain-raiser, we thought Kabir might just spring a surprise. But alas, it was not to be. He, with the (incompetent) backing from writer Rahul Handa, attempts the impossible: to revive the patriotism that ‘Rang De Basanti’ (RDB) flourished on through his frames. That none of it makes sense doesn’t really bother us, because that’s the least of the troubles with Kabir’s attempt at a “thriller”. The outcome is preposterous. With so much going against it, we’d say; “Don’t get fugly-ed”.

It’s very rare that I go into a theatre without the least expectations and come out smiling. Fugly is one of those rare moments. Fugly ably touches on many social issues — from women’s security to the steadily growing trend of drug, alcohol and s**ual use/abuse in the higher echelons of society, to corruption in the judicial and political system. The film has been cast well too
