Mama Movie Review
Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Renuka Vyavahare Site: Times Of India (TOI)
The film works brilliantly as a psychological thriller, which constantly plays with your mind. Andres Muschietti does not resort to cheap gore or cliched ghost appearances to give you the creeps. He leaves you shell-shocked instead as he plays around with shadows, mysterious evil noises and baffling supernatural occurrences. Mama is atmospheric and the haunting mood of the film impressively never goes down. The film does resemble Paranormal Activity a bit minus the ‘found footage’ cinematography, but this one’s way scarier and less static. When it comes to the plot, the back-story is not explained clearly as your questions are left unanswered, but that does not affect the spook quotient. The girls are brilliant. They contribute highly to the film’s eeriness. Cinematography is equally appealing. Icy roads, snowy forests, dark woods, deserted houses… Mama is a treat for intense horror movie buffs. Note: You may not like the movie if you find intense supernatural thrillers disturbing.

What disappoints most about this film was the way it was made. It’s like all horror films follow one specific format. Children, insects, a huge mansion, a haunted cabin in the middle of a forest and added to all of this, throw in eerie sounds that go cling-clang and yes, the occasional ugly ghost that creeps out of walls. If you’re accustomed to watching supernatural thrillers and horror films this movie won’t really scare you too much. There is nothing much in the movie to look forward to if you’re a die hard horror fanatic. The maximum you can do is probably take your girlfriend out and watch her go “ewwwwww” and squawk in fear. (All this while you console her and tell her that you will protect her!) Verdict: Another horror movie that fails to impress!
