Snow White & the Huntsman Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Reviewer:Renuka Vyavahare Site:Times Of India

Snow White and the Huntsman is the classic fairytale of Snow White with a few insignificant twists. Mirror Mirror on the wall, there are certainly way better films for you to stumble upon! Filmmaker Rupert Sanders tries hard to give the fairytale a ‘dark makeover’ a la Tim Burton but doesn’t quite achieve the desired result. The bond between the characters looks too shallow and fragile for you to feel for any of them or their dilemmas. Hemsworth is wasted and so is Theron for the film is neither a beautiful fantasy nor the dark film that can give you nightmares. It hangs in between in mediocrity.

There are two ways of reimagining a classic fairytale. Either ridicules its very premise with humour, make light of it (as seen just a few weeks back in Julia Roberts-starrer Mirror, Mirror) or embrace in all seriousness and paint in the severest shades of grim. Snow White and the Huntsman takes the latter approach but its kineticism isn’t akin to the showy appeal of obvious blockbusters. Then again, Snow White and the Huntsman, doesn’t really entertain any form of wit in its stern-faced spectacle. The lack of which is, to some extent, made up the glorious visuals it conjures, scene after scene.

This is a fairy tale for grown-ups.The Brothers Grimm have been the mainstay for so many bedtime stories for so many generations, that to suddenly have one of their most beloved tales made so grim is a surprise. The men fight and scowl, and every time they have the screen to themselves, the film turns drab. It is the women who show them the way, and keep things ticking. Not just a tale for grown ups, but a sharp feminist parable. Not at all for little kids : Ms Theron is a beast with a beating heart.

Sanders has tried, in his depiction of the classic tale, to create a dark atmosphere and in doing so has created a film that seems to be an amalgamation of Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia and Shrek. Despite everything Snow White and the Huntsman could have worked if it wasn’t for Kristen Stewart’s bland depiction of Snow White. It is Theron who really makes the film worth watching. She outshines everybody as the evil witch with a tormented past, and there are scenes where she can send a chill down your spine with just a plain old dangerous smile. If you plan to watch Snow White And The Huntsman, it should be for her. What Sanders tries to do with the children’s classic can be appreciated, the end result however, not so much.
