Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a schmaltzy, sentimental saga of the love between a boy and his horse – boy meets horse, boy loses horse, boy is reunited with horse. It’s the classic romantic formula…although with an equestrian twist. At nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes, War Horse practically drowns in sappiness. To be fair, it’s not hard to be moved by the film’s final moments, but that’s emotional manipulation for you.. It’s an overlong, suffocating affair that looks all pretty and epic but feels rather hollow inside.I’m going with two out of five for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. It’s so long and exhausting, I dub this film ‘Bore Horse’.

The message Steven Spielberg’s War Horse gives out could not have been more contemporary — why wage war when it leads to nothing. However, this time he chooses an animal (horse, to be precise), amidst the backdrop of the gruesome World War, to bring out the futility of war. it is Joey ultimately who comes out the real (war) hero. Not because Spielberg made it a point to essay fourteen different horses to portray the progression of Joey from colt to adult. Not even because he is worth every penny when galloping all panic-stricken through barbed wires. It’s for the ultimate humane message the animal gives out: We ought to be careful not to start a war. Only for those over 25… who usually like their man-and-beast movies with an extra dose of seriousness.

As schmaltzy as the story looks on paper, the film is a classic instance of old-school Hollywood, and exaggerated sentimentalism that never quite transfers the emotional rush. At one point, the film becomes laborious, not with emotion, but because of its running time. A feeling of boredom settles in relieved only by the colossal amount of technical wizardry on display. An unusual blend of technical finesse in a mostly schmaltzy set-up, riding Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a mixed experience. I’d recommend it for the striking imagery.

This is no story about warhorses, of any kind. What it is is a story about a war and all that it sweeps in it, including a horse. This film could have so easily lost its way in the war zone, but one way or the other, Spielberg and scriptwriter Richard Curtis find a way to tell the story of the battle from a perspective hardly ever seen before. With its traditional tale of war, loyalty and bravery, with an animal at the centre of it, its sweeping cinematography and a moving-cum-cheery score, War Horse’s six Oscar nominations are not a surprise.

What’s Good: The engaging and entertaining script; the performances; the masterful direction; the cinematography. What’s Bad: The slightly long running time. Verdict: War Horse is an entertaining drama that’ll do well at the Indian box-office. Definitely watch it for, it’s an excellent human drama. On the whole, War Horse is an excellent drama that entertains.
