Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:CNN-IBN

As kiddie-friendly family films go, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a harmless, breezy adventure that offers likeable characters and some exciting 3D set-pieces. Just don’t go in expecting more. The island itself is something out of a Universal Studios theme-park ride with exotic reptiles popping out of nowhere so the actors have a reason to run around the place pretending to look scared.I’m going with two out of five for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. It’s basic and predictable, but the CGI-enhanced chase sequences might appeal to the young boy in you!

So what exactly is this journey all about? Is it about relationships — a restless teenager son (Sean Anderson) and his stepfather (Hank) or Sean and his love at first sight experience with Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens)? Or is it about discovering areas unexplored — what could possibly give one more joy than a life of bliss in the lost city of Atlantis. Don’t miss out the India connection in there! Or better still, is it about some nail bitting rescue moments when the lone inhabitants of the island try to overcome tectonic shockwaves. You don’t really try finding out as long as the dazzling visual 3D effect keeps you entertained. Tip off: Fun as long as the 3D journey — through blue waterfalls and volcanoes erupting gold — lasts.

HE official language of Polynesian island Palau is English, spiders make their webs facing south, the lost city of Atlantis has a “140-year cycle” and so comes out of water every so often, girls falling off skies can be scooped up on the back of bees no wider than 2 feet, and cherries can bounce off Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s shimmying (literally) pectorals. These are the four facts you will take away from ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’. The island itself is just a backdrop against which to stage monstrous creatures and some 3D effects, crazy fights and narrow escapes, a bickerish father-in-law and a budding romance. It is entertaining in parts, particularly because of the easy charm of Johnson and the crusty crankiness of Caine. However, this is Hollywoodisation at its best in the name of honouring a classic. For all those who inhabit Verne’s world for the sheer imagination of it will cringe at how much time humans take up in it.
