Ghost Rider 2 Movie Review

Ratings:4/5 Reviewer:Allen O Brien Site:Times Of India

The Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze/Nicolas Cage) is back… this time to set the screen ablaze, literally! There’s more action, more speed runs, more bombing, more hi-tech equipment (sulphur guns and bombs), more biking craze, more screaming, more pacts with the devil, more good versus evil wars, more special effects 3D style… and much more Nicolas Cage. He may not have the soul (as Ghost Rider I), but he surely has the spirit. This Ghost Rider deserves a second chance! So, make no comparisons….

Ghost Rider reboot, Spirit Of Vengeance, forces me to type a complaint I scarcely expected to: the 3D just isn’t gimmicky enough. The film is half-baked and unfulfilling, with nothing much to recommend save for the fact that it dispenses with the character’s backstory quickly enough. It also casts three very good actors, only to then embarrass them with a painful script by David S Goyer. A cheesy first film and a painful reboot later, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the only way a Ghost Rider adaptation will actually succeed on screen is if it embraces the comics’ spirit and becomes a horror movie. With a helluva soundtrack, naturally.

Though it is definitely better than the first, it isn’t meaty enough to appeal to everyone.
‘Spirit of Vengeance’ follows a well proven track of a simple, uncluttered story and some scintillating special effects which thankfully manages to stay within its limits. Yet, the spirit of the film itself is extremely juvenile. Consider its best attempt at humour: the Rider pissing fire. As if once was not enough, its repeated a few times.Whatever its fate in the west, the film is slated to be a box office success here. Faust be damned: Long live Ghost Rider.

Those who have seen the first Ghost Rider or the Marvel comics on which the movies are based are aware of this general spread. Since Blaze and his bike go all aflame when he comes into his devilish form, there is a lot that burns in Ghost Rider — from vehicles, machinery and places to people. However, nobody, but nobody sweats.

What’s Good: A few action scenes. What’s Bad: The screenplay of convenience; the tedious drama; Nicolas Cage’s uninspiring performance.Verdict: Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance is a weak fare which will appeal only to a select few who like action films.Loo break: Several. Watch or Not?:Watch it only if you liked Ghost Rider, the first film in the series.
