List of My Mom’s New Boyfriend Review
Ratings: 0/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IbnLive
The fact that this film is offensive and icky is only one part of the problem. The other part is, it’s never funny. The premise itself reminds you of a sitcom, and the jokes are mostly flat. The once adorable Meg Ryan delivers a painfully over-the-top performance in this film, and the entire climax is so harebrained you cannot imagine someone got paid to write this trash. My Mom’s New Boyfriend is possibly the most un-funny comedy I’ve seen in years, and I suggest you don’t make the mistake of going to watch this film only because there’s nothing else at the cinemas this weekend. Zero out of five and two thumbs down for this film that I hope I’m never reminded of it again!

Here’s what a strike can do to your film schedule. It can have you end up in an audi, seeing a film that wasn’t even considered good enough to be released on the regular circuit in the US. Blame it on the eternal charm of Meg Ryan, who still retains the mesmeric twinkle in her eyes, despite her heavy cosmetic surgery. Or else on the debonair machismo of beefcake Banderas who is watchable, even if he bumbles. But the truth is you actually don’t get bored in this mindless caper which has a son spying on his mom on the behest of the government. Come on, it’s brain dead, we know. But so are most Hindi film comedies, which we so passionately love.

My Mom’s new boyfriend is a light humoured passable film which works mostly for the chemistry between Hanks and Ryan. The awkwardness, confusion, attachment, differences, that a mother-son share are perfectly rendered by the duo. Hanks is likeable while Meg Ryan’s botoxed face too exudes cute emotions and evokes laughter. There is nothing in this film that you’d take home, nor will it evoke a hearty laugh in regular intervals. It’s just a film that will ensure you won’t yawn and are hooked on to till you are watching it…which is not so bad afterall.

Unfortunately you can’t say the same about her latest film My Mom’s New Boyfriend. The film tells the story about an obese overweight nervous wreck Martha (Meg Ryan) who decides to reinvent herself as her FBI agent son Henry (Colin Hanks) goes on an assignment. The parts where Henry is trying to come to terms with his mother’s newfound libido are quite amusing. As a matter of fact My Mom’s New Boyfriend could well be a safe first date movie – you have a laugh, share popcorn and drop her home after the show (if that’s what they still do on first dates). But honestly there is little else to it.
