Jackpot doesn't spill the beans at the outset and the non-linear depiction of happenings that constantly switch back and forth leave you confused, making you wonder, what's Kaizad up to? The post-interval portions move feverishly and the unanswered questions get an answer. The writing is smart, the pacing is just right, the twists and turns in the narrative are sharp and the culmination catches you completely unaware. Kaizad serves an intelligent thriller. On the whole, JACKPOT proves to be an interesting watch with a sharp and clever second half.

Boss, Francis and Maya hatch a plan to steal crores of cash. And while the deed itself is executed decently enough, the subsequent sub-plots and implications of intrigue amongst the schemers is laid on with the predictability and subtlety of a bull in a china shop.

Kaizad Gustad has penned a very confusing story and screenplay. The film keeps going into flashbacks adding to the confusion of the audience. Only the alert and very intelligent audience will understand the drama as it unfolds, that too, if they care to. On the whole, Jackpot fails to thrill or send a chill down the audience’s spine. It will, therefore, not appeal to the audience and will bomb at the box-office.

Con artists, rainy Goa, casinos, a porn star - Gustad had the nut game but his approach is cavalier. The narrative - aspiring to be sharp and stylish - ends up lackluster and disjointed with not a single moment of high energy. Not helping matters are songs that pop up from nowhere and have zero connection to the story. Might as well stack them up front and get them out the way before starting the actual film. And as for the acting, one is at a loss of words.

There are as many coils, twists and tangles in the film's plot as there are in Naseer's wig, though the plot is not half as riveting as Naseer's hair. Sadly the stylish packaging and striking cinematography remain unsupported by the plot and characters. Neither are interesting or dangerous enough to be endearing in their immorality. Sorry, it just doesn't add up.

Much like Boom (I shudder every time I say it), Jackpot too stars a creepy old rich man and a young cunning seductress. Only this time, he does you the courtesy of adding a creepy young-ish guy and his 'lukkha' friends -- just to keep it original, you know?Only go for Jackpot if you sat right until the end of the titles of Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and yelled encore.

In this confused tale, spearheaded by con artists Francis (Sachiin Joshi), his long-limbed lover Maya (Sunny Leone), and a couple of cronies, the numbers keep changing. Sometimes it is five. Sometimes it is double and three times that. What doesn't change is the way the director leaches all the it's-so-bad-it's-great from his story, and replaces it with dullness.

While the adult star turned Bollywood heroine has high expectations from her latest release, we were really disappointed with this one. What is supposed to be a slick con film ends up like half baked pie with all the wrong ingredients in it.

What’s Good: Skin show for shoddy audience. But no treats for cine lovers. Though the film’s music is praiseworthy. What’s Bad: A contrived style of narration and the story which is best understood by Gustad only. Kaizad Gustad’s Jackpot is best forgotten. With a team of really pathetic actors, the film won’t thrill or excite you. If there was one film which just wants to kill you by boring you to death, it would be this one. While the year has had really bad films, this one is the most sleep incurring one of the lot.

  1. JACKPOT:
Poker faced entertainment! Promises everything, offers nothing! [.5/5]

Earlier in the film; when being questioned by a sluggish, lethargically slow-spoken cop played by the theatrical Makrand Deshpande, Naseeruddin Shah is seen with the name of Ram Gopal Varma on the board in the backdrop, I sink in my deep confusion if that was done in good gesture to show a great respect to the filmmaker or it was just a pun intended because this baffling camel sits neither of the sides.

The comedy con thriller ‘JACKPOT’ marks a long-awaited comeback of Kaizad Gustad- a filmmaker who, despite giving ‘Dud of the Decade’ BOOM, had shown great promises as a new-wave filmmaker [of then, at least] with his violently witty BOMBAY BOYS well before the ‘Anurag Kashyap Phenomenon’ came in to the scene. Sadly, JACKPOT disappoints at all fronts. It misses the magical touch of Gustad that used to bring the underworld in light in the most ‘unexplored before’ maniac manner. It also fails to impress with an amateurish approach in film-making.

Set in the mysteriously drugged nature of Goa, 4 con artists [Sachin Joshi & Sunny Leone plays two of them] induce a 250 Cr land-deal to the owner of the biggest casino in the city [played by Naseeruddin Shah in his weirdly ‘rope like hair strings’ getup] but in order to get things in process, they also must win the yearly poker game of 5 Cr Jackpot organized on Shah’s cruiser. They get succeeded but not the way it was planned. Now, the jackpot money is missing and everyone involved believes others are done with it. Does it not sound familiar with most of the con films? Well, even that can be overlooked if the screenplay takes the lead and provides breathtaking twists and turns to let loose your thinking horses all the time.

In the countable-on-fingers merits if I think hard, there is an impressive opening credits inspired by 007 Bond movie title sequences. Though it creates only some false conjecture to what it may come to you in next 90 minutes, it is a well-thought, nicely done part. I also can not agree more on that the duration was defiantly a big & decisive pro for me. Cinematography is strictly ok. Some one-liners are witty and remind you of the Kaizad Gustad of late 90’s but I don’t see reasons for what songs were doing in the midst of this entire supposedly crisp thriller.

For the performances, I would say you are looking for wrong thing at the wrong place. Sachin Joshi is probably the worst looking hero in recent times. He impressed most with his action sequences in AZAAN but here he depresses everyone with his unkempt, messy look and equally bad dialogue delivery [He doesn’t even bother to lip-sync the song he’s performing in]. And to top it all, he is the one who narrates the story for the most part. God bless the viewers! Sunny Leone doesn’t disappoint much as she does what she does best…and I am not talking about acting. Naseeruddin Shah repeats himself. We have seen him before in such avatar. Why he needs to opt for such scripts is unconvincing.

Overall; if this is the comeback, I would like to see Gustad resting in peace wherever he was till now. This JACKPOT makes you feel loser at the end and is something that no one wants to win. Boredom is what you get out of this poker faced entertainment! [.5/5]

  5. It is absolute nonsense to say Masand did not review this horrendous film. He did - on his website rajeevmasand, com>

    He began the review thus

" Writing out a review for Ramgopal Varma Ki Aag amounts to dignifying this third-rate film with a studied observation on its plot, its characters and its treatment. And believe me, that’s more thought and effort than the film’s director has put into it. I can’t come up with appropriate enough words to describe the horror I felt sitting in that cinema watching Ramgopal Varma Ki Aag .. ."

    and ended it with . . .

"Ramgopal Varma Ki Aag is his worst career decision ever, it’s also a dark spot on his resume he’ll be embarrassed of forever. I suspect this film will go down in movie history as Ramgopal Varma Ka Daag.

    Rating: 0 / 5 (Such Trash!)"
