Besharam Movie Review

Ratings:1/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:Masand's Verdict (CNN IBN - IBNLive)
'Besharam' is the kind of joyless film that compels you to wonder if a fat paycheck can sometimes be the only incentive for talented people to go to work. Even more baffling is the issue of the film's leading lady, an ordinary actress at best who, along with the director, fails to justify why she was hired here. Doesn't help of course that the score is a complete letdown, the look and feel of the film tacky, and the scatological humor mostly off-putting. I'm going with one out of five for Besharam. A major misfire in every way.

BESHARAM is Ranbir's first tryst with an out-and-out masala film. A genre that's suddenly caught the fancy of every actor in tinsel town. This one's more like the vintage masala films that we relished in the Bachchan era. With a contemporary tadka, of course. The question is, does BESHARAM work? Unfortunately, it doesn't! On the whole, this film proves the adage 'All that glitters is not gold' absolutely right. BESHARAM is a huge disappointment!

As I watched Besharam, I marveled at Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s powers at pitching stories. How, I wondered, did he convince not only Bollywood’s hottest new superstar Ranbir Kapoor but also his parents, to sign up for this train-wreck of a film. The producers’ money and the actors’ time have already been wasted by Besharam. I recommend that you save both by skipping it. I’m going with one star.

This seems like Kashyap's test-drive with Ranbir, with average direction, un-moving music, and a screenplay that is unoriginal and so low on horsepower that it deflates before he revs the reel. He relies on the sheer 3K (read: Kapoors) power to entertain. While this is far from the best films of the year, if you shamelessly love Ranbir, go for it. Note: You might not like this if don't have an appetite for typical Bollywood formula films.

On the whole, Besharam is an ordinary film which suffers on three counts mainly – ordinary script, dull music and weak heroine. However, it has Ranbir Kapoor’s superstardom and the excellent initial (due to holiday of Gandhi Jayanti) as its plus points. Overall, the film may not be liked by a large section of the audience and may, therefore, not have an eventful run at the cinemas but, commercially speaking, it will definitely reach the safety mark.

No audience is gullible enough to fall for the same rigmarole week after week. Besharam is just one more in the pile of masala excess. There's nothing new here. The disappointment is particularly high because this time it's Ranbir Kapoor - an actor known for his eclectic, intelligent choice of scripts - who has picked the paint-by-numbers route. However, you do get a long unhindered view of his butt crack if that's the sort of thing that interests you.

'Besharam' is not a film. It is Bollywood's brightest young star stooping to conquer, in search of the mass market. There is no motif in the film other than making Ranbir the new Salman. But why do that when we already have a Salman? Right, now that Ranbir has got this 'besharmi' out of the way, can we ask the actor to get back from under?

Besharam, rambunctious and robust, does not offer much by way of narrative novelty. But like Dabangg, it sets a crackling pace and does not flinch from the prospect of going over the edge in its pursuit of cheap thrills. Watch Besharam primarily for Ranbir Kapoor and the zany climax in an old-world warehouse where the ghosts of many Hindi movie heroes of yore are invoked.

Besharam is so unbelievably sloppy and senseless, not even the best actors in the business can redeem it no matter how hard they try.' Besharam relies on Kapoors – Ranbir, Rishi and Neetu to do miracles without any of the crisply penned lines or a witty screenplay at their disposal. And leading lady Pallavi Sharda’s stiff screen presence coupled with her nearly violent dancing skills highlight her insufficiencies in a magnified view. And if you do too, spare yourself from this shame of a movie.

As Ranbir fan, one would not really mind the movie. But it does not make an impact as ‘Dabbang’ moment for the hero. The superstar in the making is probably is a much better actor than a masala entertainer and that’s something that he has proven in his previous movies. The filmmaker did not have a proper vision for an actor of Ranbir’s calibre and this one is certainly not the best for either of them!

This is Ranbir's experiment to see whether he can successfully do the films that Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar have knocked out of the park. Can't blame him for trying to do something different. And talented he is, because he does it as well as his seniors. But do Ranbir's audience want him doing this? That is the big question.

The reason Filmmaker Abhinav Singh Kashyap succeeded the first time with Dabangg was because he had Salman Khan who is capable of pulling off all the possible non nonsensical scenes and dialogues given to him; it works with Salman's fans almost all the time. Now the director tries to do something similar with Ranbir Kapoor and does it work? Obviously not! I can't decide what's worse, Lalit Pandit's music or Abhinav Kashap's direction. Mr Kashyap, you got the Kapoor clan in attendance and your lead actor did his bit.. is that enough? Skip this Besharam film!

What’s Good: It is a cheerfully crackling film with the thunderous touch of Abhinav Kashyap. What’s Bad: Filmmakers need to learn that rabid formulaic ideas can be created with crisp writing too. Watch or Not?: Besharam is indeed a credulous attempt at invoking audiences to watch a variation of run-of-the-mill stories commercial cinema subjects us to.There are no outrageously significant elements that makes it a compelling watch which in the end rankles deeply! But if cinema is way of enjoying nachos and popcorn for you, Ranbir’s shamelessly ‘Besharam’ avatar will do for you!

  22. BESHARAM:
It is not so shameless but a shameful out-dated entertainer! [2/5]

In a scene where Ranbir Kapoor, playing a car-thief named Babli, tries to escape by tying up an ageing police inspector, played by his off-screen father Mr. Rishi Kapoor, with a bedsheet and refers him as ‘mota! dharti ka bojh!’ [Fat man! The useless burden on the earth!], you laugh, of course; but not at the situation, not at the forceful wit lines throw at you but for the very fact that they both share a father-son relationship in real life. The pun was intended and achieved! I wish if the same goes with the most of jokes in Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s second directorial venture BESHARAM. I seriously wish…

In a lifted paper-thin storyline that’s no indifferent from the bollywood hits of 60’s, 70’s and of 80’s to some extent, Babli [played by super-charged Ranbir Kapoor] is an orphan who masters in stealing posh cars. No prizes for guessing that he contributes most of his hard-earned money to the orphanage for the welfare of the kids and now wants to leave all this for his love of life Tara [newbie Pallavi Sharda in her full-fledged debut]. Meanwhile, the Law enforcers dressed as Chautala duo [absolutely adorable Rishi Kapoor & ravishingly charismatic Neetu Singh Kapoor] and the lawbreaker Hawala-king Bhim Singh Chandel [Jaaved Jaffrey in a delightful surprise package as a grim-faced villain] both are waiting for him to settle the final score. What waits for you in the store is anything but a breathless, mindless, action packed climax!

With his first the fearless ‘DABANGG’, Abhinav impressed all of us with a style of unseen fresh writing and a solid hand in well developed characterization but in this shameless ‘BESHARAM’, it’s only the writing that lets him down. You are never out of sight as what will come next. In swear to be bold and blatantly unashamed, all he could come up with a few dialogues here and there that talk about ‘fart’ & ‘shits’ in literal. In the screenplay, songs come back to back as if either you are watching a musical or a ‘Chitrahar’ on Doordarshan.

Film, if even for once, could be pronounced as watchable, it would be the performances. Ranbir Kapoor alone has his charm to run shows houseful. Though there is not much to surprise, he is confidently there to stand tall. Pallavi Sharda is good but I don’t see the promise to bring something fresh on screen with her typical looks. Amitosh Nagpal as Ranbir’s friend does create some cackling moments. Rishi Kapoor too has been exploring an impressive second innings in Bollywood with his notable selection of films but I could never stop my heart beating at a speed of a bullet train whenever I had my privilege to watch Ms. Neetu Singh Kapoor setting screen on fire with her spontaneity and marvelously aging beauty!

At the end, it is a film that will be under scrutiny because of the expectations people have from Abhinav Singh Kashyap’s being the Captain of the ship and the track-record he has set with ‘DABANGG’. Alas! We have to wait for another to judge his potential better, as of now BESHARAM is bold, shameless & funny in parts; but for the most, it is a formulaic forced entertainer that is filled- loaded & packed with all the masalas of Bollywood potboilers we have been watching from ages. And this is probably not the best time to serve ‘run of the mill’ stale meal. An average entertainer and a big disappointment! Watch it if you really have to! [2/5]

  50. The movie disappoints. Considering Ranbir Kapoor’s recent movies, this one was much anticipated. But, Besharam turned out to be a complete let down. The first half is watchable, it has some content. But, the scenes pictured post interval are just unbearable. The climax is totally bizarre, expressed in the lamest way. The action scenes are unconditionally unreal. The story is unconventional as most of the Bollywood flicks in recent times. There are some funny sequences in the first half which save the movie from being a complete tiresome and humdrum.

In spite of having big names in the list of actors, Besharam fails to create an impression. The characters of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor are overplayed which didn’t at all seem to be pleasant. Debutant actress, Pallavi Sharda, who played the lead role opposite Ranbir Kapoor, gave a mediocre acting performance but she is thoroughly energetic as a dancer. All the acts featuring her are absolutely stupendous. Ranbir Kapoor, once again, is eloquent and impassioned with his acting, but couldn’t develop the required amount of interest among the viewers. Amitosh Nagpal in a supporting role is quite appreciable. Javed Jaffrey plays the bad guy, a funny bad guy who manages to pull out a moderate performance.

The music is below average. The songs could’ve been a lot more enthralling and pleasurable. There have been songs put within every 30 minutes of the total run time, which seems unnecessary. Taking everything into consideration, Besharam is an over dramatized exhibition of an ordinary romantic comedy. (1.5/5)
