Phata Poster Nikhla Hero Movie Review

If you're willing to set your expectations accordingly, there's some fun to be had in the low-IQ comedy, 'Phata Poster Nikhla Hero', particularly in the film's breezy first half. But writer-director Rajkumar Santoshi fails to stick with this cheerfully harebrained tone in the film's second half.I'm going with two out of five for 'Phata Poster Nikhla Hero'. It loses steam at the halfway mark when the laughs suddenly dry up.

PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO brings back memories of old-fashioned comic entertainers. There's not much of a plot here, but you go with the flow without making much effort. You laugh, celebrate the silly gags and by the time the story reaches its conclusion, you realize that the film has won you over with its unfussy plot and basic characters, who don't have a serious bone in their body. On the whole, PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO is an entertainer all the way. If you relished AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI from the team of Taurani and Santoshi, chances are you will also lap up this vibrant, kaleidoscopic, light-hearted entertainer.

Like his earlier comedies, which include the cult classic Andaz Apna Apna, Santoshi aims to create a zany and wacky tone. In places, this film is inspired. But often, it’s just tired. But comedy like this needs to be relentlessly inventive and high-energy. He bungs in emotions that the film hasn’t earned. Post-interval, the vigor deflates considerably. But none of it can make up for the lack of laughs. Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is intermittently entertaining. If you are undemanding or a Shahid Kapoor fan, you might enjoy it. I’m going with two and a half stars.

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is a caper comedy that rides on pop culture and, in full awareness, cliches. Rajkumar Santoshi tries to put an original spin on the South-Indian film remake formula that Bollywood is besieged by. He attempts to mock it by getting rid of all "serious" elements and keeping it firmly in the comic zone. Unfortunately, it stops being funny after a while. Essentially a gimmicky two-star film that entertains in bits, a half star extra for Salman Khan's epic, self-deprecating cameo.

The first half offers loads of cackles, chuckles, witticisms and spoofy scenes. Post-interval the comedy collapses for a bit with forced OTT drama, khaali-peeli action, and too many songs breaks, but makes a comeback with delightfully funny moments. This one's worth it for the 'howlarity' of it all. And Shahid in his element. Note: You may not like this film if you don't have a taste for silly humour & mindless gags!

Rajkumar Santoshi’s story is quite routine and the same can be said about his screenplay. But several comic sequences are hilarious and will bring the house down with laughter. The screenplay adopts the easy way out – because in the film, anything seems to be possible to do, that too, anywhere, anytime, anyhow. On the whole, Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is an entertaining fare and will keep the audience as well as the distributors smiling. But its dull start will affect its final tally. Its business in single-screen cinemas will be better than in the multiplexes because the classes would not approve of the cinematic liberties like the masses.

PPNH tries too hard to impersonate both Andaz Apna Apna’s flaky sense of humour and Ajab Prem’s loony energy but cannot conceal its urge to include a dated brand of soppy sentiments. The upshot is a film with a multiple personality disorder.Occasionally, I half-smiled at the laboured silliness put forth by this clean but clichéd farce. Only the darn poster is, ultimately, too phata, purana for anything to come out of it except disillusionment.

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is the kind of dim-witted comedy that might leave the hardiest of Bollywood junkies in tears. The agony of being subjected to this tattered bag of stale tricks can indeed be excruciating, when it is not outright numbing. Andaz Apna Apna is history. Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is not even Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Stay away from this film if you value your time and money. And if you still insist on giving it a shot, do remember that there is no refund on the ticket. That is what you will be asking for well before the joke winds up.

And you hope that this spirit will colour the rest of the film, about a fellow who wants to be a film hero, and whose mother wants him to be a cop. Alas, that doesn't happen. On this one- liner of a plot, Rajkumar Santoshi has built a two-and-a-half hour film which is meant to make us laugh, but ends up making us groan instead.

Watch or Not?: Rajkumar Santoshi has stuffed his vast knowledge of commercial cinema well in Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. It is another formulaic film with a rather simple story at its core. If entertainment is all you expect from films, this one won’t hurt much in its first half. It has a hero who smashes, thrashes and makes you laugh all with equal ease! I won’t call it a must watch since the film becomes a drab post-interval with its dwindling laughter and story going haywire but nevertheless you can give this one a shot. It won’t be entirely regrettable!

Shahid Kapoor, he is trying hard enough to seem his whole career depends on this film. At the end of it, he even lists for the audience all the things he’s done in the movie: basically fought with the villain, danced with the item girl, romanced the heroine, done comedy, gone through emotional scenes, bashed up the goons, even saved the city... Truly, what else do you want? A headache pill will help.

While the first half of the film is at least filled with dialogues aimed at making audiences laugh out loud, it seems Santoshi, who wrote the film, forgot that he was writing a comedy when he got to the second half. There are barely any scenes in it that make you chuckle. To make things worse, the chaotic climax is so similar to Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Rajkumar Santoshi’s movie is a joke, only it’s not the kind that tickles us, but one that leaves us thoroughly exhausted. Rajkumar, who dons many hats –of director and writer -- could’ve probably redeemed himself if he had exercised his moviemaking acumen and invested in a story instead of relying purely on a handful of dated jokes, a few pleasing tunes, a handsome bloke and a pretty woman. But, that’s exactly what he does. In fact, he sticks to the formula that had surprisingly won him box-office (and critical acclaim) for his earlier blockbuster ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’.

Santoshi as writer, director and the dialogue writer is in good form. He would have been terrific if could have captured your interest in the same way as he did in the first half of the film. Still, the film is worth more than a few laughs. More because of the way the director spoofs Bollywood's tried and tested conventions and the jokes he cracks at the expense of an industry he is only too familiar with.

  12. This movie is a classic and is worth sending for the Oscars. The people who dump this intellectual comedy do not know how to watch a movie. They are only fit to watch chennai express. 20 years from now this movie will be seen as a start to a new comedy revolution. Eagerly waiting for Phata Poster II

  13. I think now day's there is lot of disparity between critic's review and audience reaction to the movie, and overall outcome of the movies eg CE, Masti2, Race all were thrashed by critic's but did well...there r many more in the list, while others were given good ratings but were not liked by audiences...
In my opinion it might b better if one goes by his own perception n liking rather than critics review.

  26. PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO: A nice break from double-meaning jokes but still not enough to relish as we expect! [2/5]

Expectations don’t always ripe in a healthy product. Sometimes, they just fall flat on your face. Sometimes, they go hysterically wrong to create humour. Sadly, Rajkumar Santoshi’s PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO belongs to the previous category. Santoshi earlier tried and expected to re-create his classic comic caper ANDAZ APNA APNA and ended up with a lesser product called AJAB PREM KI GAJAB KAHANI, this time he genuinely and visibly tries to replicate the success-story of APKGK but again…expectations don’t always ripe in a healthy product.

A single mother who wants his son to be an ‘imaandar’ police inspector but the son is more interested in rising as the new poster-boy of Bollywood and also doesn’t want to hurt his loving mother’s feelings. This may look old-school formulaic Bollywood story-line but trust me, it has the potential to make you smile & giggle at the comedy of errors it CAN create but it doesn’t. A comic book styled film that is filled with cartoon-ish caricatures [Saurabh Shukla as local don so resembles with Motu of Motu-patlu comics, skinny twinkling-eyed glam doll heroine, hero is so swift that when he fights all you can see is the blasting dust & dirt on the screen and a villain with a mission to destroy the world], why would need melodrama of emotional exploitation only to slower the pace and lower the amount of fun? I still don’t get it.

In a hospital where the mother is fighting for her life, when the son is informed as some Dr. Vinod khanna is asking for him, all this movie-fanatic son can come with is, “vinod khanna doctor kab bann gaye?” He sure is very comfortable in his dream world of movies even in such emotional times. This is the most hilarious joke it has and I loved it. In other, when someone passes remark on Mukesh Tiwari playing the villain that “who’s this Jackie Shroff look-alike?” you really find it hard to stop giggling as you already had thought the exactly same of his get-up.

And how can I forget that one of the most enjoyable cameos in recent! Santoshi’s favorite Salman khan appears as himself like he did in APKGK but this time, he’s in full form. He also hints at the ANDAZ APNA APNA sequel in process. Who knows…someday we will be lucky enough to see that!! For the rest, writing only lows down the standard. Though it is a good relief to see a clean comedy that doesn’t rely on adult double-meaning one-liners, but jokes here are either forced or too flat to laugh out loud. Screenplay also doesn’t give a constant pleasurable experience.

On the merits, it is a pleasant surprise to see yesteryear actress PADMINI KOLHAPURE making a comeback in Hindi films [she was there in Marathi cinema always]. As the overtly done typical loud Indian filmy mother, she does full justice to her given part. We sure want to see more of her in more meaty roles]. Ileana D’Cruze, after BURFI, made a lot of promises as a competent actress but this is not something she would expect to create a buzz for. She is there and mostly in some beautifully picturised songs. But the film belongs to Shahid Kapoor. His dedication, his effort shows in every single scene. He does all he could to make you laugh & cry. I wish writing had been really a little kind to him to support his commitment. Poor fellow!

With Anjum Rajbali & K K Raina, Rajkumar Santoshi once was known for his crispy-tight-punchy writing and screenplay that holds you for the most of the times in theaters It seems I am talking about some gone lost filmmaker of past. I hope he comes back with his old charm soon but as of now, PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO is not the Rajkumar Santoshi Film we want. It’s uninspiring, exasperatingly lengthy, formulaic and less funny than we expected. Watch it if you are Shahid Kapoor Fan, you won’t get disappointed! [2/5]

  30. Phata poster Nikla Hero is Shahids genuine try to regain the lost race in bollywood. The 32 year old actor does a decent job.The movie is a family entertainer with many loop holes in between where you get mixed feelings if to laugh or frown.Ileana has little screen space .Salman has a special appearance without makeup on ,which makes him look like shahids father pankaj kapoor..The movie has a typical rajkumar santhoshi type ending.Apart from this ,side actors are the best to look out for..Their comic timing is class apart.
