There are moments of great pathos here, and an inspiring lesson on the importance of perseverance and hard work. But it all moves at a snail’s pace, even as the drama of Milkha’s rise on the race track is punctured routinely by too many songs, overlong romantic tracks, and the kind of ‘commercial-movie trappings’ that are counterproductive to a film of this nature. . The film itself is well intentioned and shines a light on an important figure. But it’s too long and too unfocused to leave a lasting impression. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Watch it for Farhan Akhtar’s sincere performance.

A handful of films sprint that extra mile beyond providing meager entertainment to its spectators. BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is one such cinematic experience. However, director Mehra and writer Prasoon Joshi encompass pertinent episodes/chapters from the icon's life and create a film that makes you salute the sportsperson, besides evoking the spirit of nationalism in the spectator. On the whole, BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is sure to win accolades, admiration, respect and esteem, besides emerging as a champ. Reserve the applause for Milkha Singh and the team behind BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG. Give it a standing ovation!

Right then, the bottom line is that you should watch this film for two reasons that supersede all else. Farhan Akhtar shows tremendous commitment in his role as the Flying Sikh. And finally, BMB deserves every ounce of praise for the filmmakers' conviction on display. When you're done watching Rakyesh Omprakash's epic effort, you'll come out of the theater wanting to run. And be a better person. This, right here, is the film's ultimate victory.

He ran his first race for ek glass doodh. And he never stopped. Untiringly. He ran because it was his religion. 'BMB' traces his scarred childhood, brutalized by India's Partition; followed by penury and petty crimes. .Overall, 'BMB' pulsates with the storyteller's sheer passion all the way to the finish line. While you are on-the-run, pause to watch this one. Note: You will not like this film if in-depth biopics don't appeal to your taste.

On the whole, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will have an eventful run at the cinemas and will turn out to be a richly rewarding film for all concerned. Its undue length will adversely affect collections to an extent and will, therefore, tell on the box-office results but it will still prove to be a very paying proposal. Business in the big cities and good multiplexes will be excellent.

For a film about sprinting and clocking shortest timings possible, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag moves at a snail’s pace and goes on for over 3 hours. And while the protagonist purportedly possesses tremendous focus, the film seems to lack that very quality. And though it touches upon uncomfortable incidents, it painstakingly seeks to justify and glorify its hero with melodrama, dramatic camerawork and slow-motion shots of rippling muscles.

I wish I could find any other reason to recommend Mehra’s three-plus hour film that attempts to be an epic, but is really thin in plot and goes in so many different directions before it finally solves the so-called mystery: Why would Milkha Singh not run in Pakistan? Milkha Singh was no doubt an inspiring figure, but the three hours that Guruji takes to walk us through the runner’s story – and that too just 13 years of his life seems way too long. Even a vibrant performance by Akhtar cannot save a film that attempts to be an epic like Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi.

The much anticipated Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is anything but the film that Milkha Singh deserves. The overlong Bhaag Milkha Bhaag seeks to achieve a dramatic heightening of the effect of a champion athlete’s rousing struggle to break free from the traumas of the past and turn adversity to opportunity. In the bargain, it reduces the human saga to a loud, melodramatic and over-wrought tale that overstays its welcome. To describe it in athletics terms, Bhaag Milkha Singh is a 400 metres sprint that feels like a cross-country race. Go for it only if you trust your endurance threshold.

Carefully skirting the tag of a bio-pic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag manages to tell the story of Milkha Singh, as enacted by Farhan Akhtar, while giving us, tiresomely, all the familiar bells and whistles of a Bollywood entertainer with the naach-gaana, and the rona-dhona.If the film had kept it pared, toning down the trumpets which blare everytime something momentous is about to happen, it would have been a more powerful testament to an all-time sporting great. As it has turned out, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is more the overlong, overblown Singing-Dancing-Flying Sikh, than just the triumphal, true Flying Sikh.

Some lives are made for the big screen. Milkha Singh's certainly is one. It has everything. Throw it all together with the added drama of India vs Pakistan and you have one of the most neglected sports stories of the century. It's a sports tale but don't expect a Chak De! India or a Swades. You will find yourself cheering for Milkha a few times but you wish there was more to cheer for. What to do: If you are in the mood for some intense bio-drama, run to the nearest theatre.

What’s Good: From story, to acting, to screenplay, to direction; this one indeed is picture perfect! What’s Bad: Even if there was something, it was quite easy to miss those glitches! Watch or Not?: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is one of those rare films which are hard to forget long after you are done with them. This Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra biopic based on the magnetic life of athlete Milkha Singh, is all about pluses that champions the spirit of human living! Watch it for Farhan Akhtar who impeccably replicates the soul of Milkha Singh and leaves you with goosebumps!

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag calls itself a biopic but it never stops feeling like an exaggerated yarn — the creative liberties taken are just ridiculous and expecting anything factually correct goes out the window. In Bhaag Milkha Bhaag literally every single dramatic turn is given the ’80s’ Bollywood and 2000s’ desi soap opera treatment to wrench emotion out of you.

The reality of Milkha Singh's biopic is lost in the overdose of drama that Bollywood so proudly serves on its platter. But after you sit through the dragging first half, the film starts gathering pace with the screen time now consumed more with Milkha's record-breaking achievements on the field than vignettes from his personal life. It is clear that Mehra and his team worked very hard to bring the story of Milkha Singh to the screen. There is a lot of research that went into BMB and the running sequences are quite gripping.

    1. Tagged a biopic by its team, BMB awfully looks like a movie laced with best of the commercial treatments Bollywood garnishes its offerings with to satiate the cravings of masala movie lovers. It is everything but a serious cinema on the life of an unsung Hero, Milkha Singh.

A convoluted and overly dragged first half having loopy flashbacks made me experience such harrowing moments which Milkha Singh would have felt while preparing himself for his sprints. Although the second half is a bit more interesting thanks to its attention towards Milkha's achievements, it still has several redundant scenes which could easily have been chopped off. If at all the word 'Editing' existed, then BMB has obliterated it from its reckoning. Several redundant recalls of faRUN, immoderate attachment between faRun and Rebecca, and a superfluous narrative turns the Sprint into a Marathon.

    7. for ur info Mr annoymous, farhan akhtar was the only one one with production and direction, who released Don with janeman.... and janemann was a flop even though it was a rare good movie by salman. Yeah salman may be the one to bring 100 crores in 5 days, but he cannot make legacy....
he had done with his legacy days, the movies like karan arjun, and maine pyar kia...
he is only a production figure, yeah a hero, but surely not an actor.....
thanks to prabhu deva for saving the sinking ship for salman, but you crazies will not understand. Yeah i do love Salman movies, but upto a limit, i loved Dabangg and wanted, but what was with ETTiger, and f!@# bodyguard....
if salman is a hero, then farhan has a class...
so stop comparing, you cannot compare someone so different from each other.
enjoy the effort made by farhan in bmb, not stop the pathetic jokes here.

  12. Titled as ‘The Flying Sikh’ by the Government of Pakistan, Milkha Singh is indisputably a living legend in Indian sports. Period. Now, possibilities are that most of us might not know the real story behind why he could not bring us ‘the’ gold medal in Olympics or we might just have our minds crammed with numerous assumptions and ‘I have heard it somewhere’ theories about the incident but the fact remains unharmed that Milkha Singh was/is & will be the man of such stature that can only be accomplished in guidance of the best teacher one can have, called life.

With BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG- a 3 hour 8 min long biopic, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra tries to peep into the ‘never been opened’ chapters of his life but sadly decides to take a route, very obvious & convenient, in terms of Bollywood norms. Film starts with Milkha losing out medal in Rome Olympics and denying to participate in an Indo-Pak sports summit organized soon after. & then we take a trip back and forth in flashback and in present [the very impressive narrative style we had seen in Mehra’s ‘RANG DE BASANTI’ in not so appealing manner, the thrills and the charm is missing] to excavate the dark past of ’47 partition that still haunts him and is never ready to leave him alone, to deal with his own set of fears.

The story does have a promise and an undeniable need to be told to our new generation but Mehra’s melodramatic approach to recreate sequences and a forced effort to make each one of them entertaining, kills the much required intensity & sensitivity in the tale. Situations get cyclic at a point of time when you see races ending up in a same manner. And in the second half mostly, all of sudden Milkha starts looking as a regular Bollywood hero that could overcome any mountain-size hurdles but very conveniently and guess what? He even does a song & dance sequence with an Australian beauty, ending up in a lip-lock and a steamy love-making scene.

Technically speaking, film does not falter in its most aspects like cinematography [with the magical eyes of Binod Pradhan], soaring music-background score and a stellar performance by Farhan Akhtar [His all flesh & blood dedication, commitment and a complete devotion to his part is worth accolade and applause from left, right and center] but what makes it restricted to ‘just a good effort’ is the lack of honesty, delicacy and smartness in the direction…and of course, a strict chopping hands on editing table would have contributed more to make things look crisper and cleaner.

I wish if the drama has not taken over the emotions, it would have been much better. Even so, it’s a good watch! Thanks to Farhan! Watch out for his washroom scene where he slaps himself continuously to punish him. I have yet to see such sincere involvement in a performance as an actor. All in all, BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG rides high on entertainment but lacks at the emotional connect. Watch it for Milkha Singhji and you’ll be coming out of theaters, falling for Farhan! ***[3/5]

  35. Friends, Am little old in age to post my opinion here my grand son is forcing me a lot after a night show film today so i would like to express.

At the outset, i have no words actually to say, yes it is outstanding, very touching, very patriotic and inspiring.

    5/5 full marks. God Bless.

Friends, I was in tears in second half and i think every Indian must watch and be proud of Milkha Singh. He is and will be known as 'flying sikh' and broke world record despite lot of set backs in his life. I salute and congratulate the whole film making team.

    Jai Hind. Thank you.

  36. Excitement, thrill and passion- those words best describe this week’s new release ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ (Titled on the last words spoken by his father). Get ready to witness the story of this legend Milka Singh in Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra’s style.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag depicts the story of Milkha Singh, India’s most iconic athlete, who came to India during the partition. The story begins when Milkha Singh loses his 400m race in Rome Olympics and soon after is asked to go to Pakistan for a sports tournament to which he refuses. The story then moves to the flashback where Gurudev Singh, his coach, narrates the story of this legend right from his childhood in Multan, Pakistan.

There are moments that would keep you at the edge of your seats, particularly the races. The first half would go in a flash and you would get so much of engaged in the film. Yes, Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra’s direction has that ability which we have already seen in Rang De Basanti. The direction is commendable. The dialogues are superb.
The second half though, seemed a bit too stretched. It gets too much of commercial. The 188 minute long running time may irritate the audiences.

The soul of the movie though is, Farhan Akhtar. This man is a true Champ. You would start believing in real that he only is Milka Singh and that shows the dedication and effort of this actor. Undoubtedly, the best actor of the year so far! Sonam Kapoor and Divya Dutta are good. Yograj Singh and Pawan Malhotra leave an impact.

Try and watch this one in a single screen as I did and you might just like it more. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag should impress you. Thumbs up!

    Rating- 3.5/5

  39. I never imagined that India had such glory days in athletics. Thanks to this movie ... it changed my perception. Farhan should be very proud, he really did a great job and his efforts are clearly visible. I think he deserve awards for such a performance. No seriously.. I didn't even know who Milkha Singh was ..but after this movie I will never forget him. And tomorrow I will tell same to my children and grandchildren.
I think its better to watch such movies than the traditional masala hindi films... even Salman khan will agree with me.

    Keep it up Farhan.
