Barfi! Movie Review by Top Critics

Ratings:3/5 Barfi! Review by Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive (CNN IBN)
That rare film that puts a smile on your face even before a single frame of the story is revealed, Anurag Basu’s Barfi envelopes you like a warm blanket from the moment you settle into your seat. Not content telling a simple story without any fuss, he complicates the narrative with confusing timelines and a needless whodunit subplot. Sadly, Basu’s film goes on too long and drags its feet in the end. Barfi had the potential to be great cinema, but as it stands it’s a respectable film that’s still better than a lot else you’re likely to see. I’m going with three out of five for director Anurag Basu’s Barfi. It’s a treat like the mithai it takes its name from. Go on, indulge your sweet tooth.

BARFI! cannot be slotted in any particular genre. The beauty of the film lies in the fact that it instantly absorbs you into Barfi's world. I wish to specify that one should not correlate BARFI! with disability. It's more about characters who face the challenges that life has to offer, yet live a more gratifying life than anyone else. It's about living each day of your life to the fullest, giving happiness, feeling love. It's a unique love story between three exceptional characters, something we haven't witnessed on the Hindi screen earlier. On the whole, BARFI! is unusual for Bollywood. You don't formulate movies like BARFI! targeting its box-office potential or its commercial prospects. You create such films for the passion of cinema. BARFI! is akin to a whiff of fresh air. Its foremost triumph is that it leaves you with a powerful emotion: Happiness! I sincerely believe, no Hindi movie buff should deprive himself/herself of watching this brilliant motion picture. Also, the viewer needs to savor Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana's paramount performances, one of the strengths of this movie. Strongly recommended!

Ratings:3/5 Barfi! Review by Anupama Chopra Site:Hindustan Times
This is a film made with love, bolstered by wonderfully etched vignettes, Ranbir Kapoor's stupendous performance and a gorgeous soundtrack by Pritam. And yet, for me, Barfi was a singularly frustrating experience there was so much to like, but the film never became more than the sum of its parts. As long as Basu stays with the love track, the film moves, but then we are sidetracked by suspense, which isn't all that suspenseful because you can predict exactly who did what. The film insists too hard that we find the magical in the mundane. I wish Barfi! the film was as magical as Barfi the character. See it for him.

A well-crafted script with an intriguing back-and-forth narrative -- set in the present day, 1978 and 1972 -- Barfi! intrigues, right to the point somewhere down the middle, when it becomes more than apparent exactly what the film's story is, after which all goes south. And yet so impressive and earnest are most parts of Barfi! that one is inclined even to forgive its flawed centre; we want badly to overlook the film's peach-seed heart, and concentrate on the rest of its juicy joys. And these it provides in abundance.

Had the drama been more compact and linear, the film would’ve been far more universal in its appeal. The post-interval portion, especially, is long-winding and, therefore, boring. .On the whole, Barfi! is a heart-warming love story which is different. It will be loved by the class audience and the city-based public, especially by those who frequent multiplexes. As for the masses of the single-screen cinemas and the audience in ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres, they would not find the film as satisfying.

Everything that has to go wrong will go wrong, but not if you brave it with a broad smiley. So 'mute' the high decibel chaos and deafening melodrama around and tune into Barfi ki duniya; which is simple, sweet and SILENT! Yet, extreme emotions of love, joy and pain resound - at different 'frequencies'.For a story riddled with disabilities, Barfi is more than ably handled by Anurag Basu. He remarkably immerses you in his world of sounds and verbose silences, recreating Chaplin's antics, stripping two superstars down to basics and sensitively spinning a magical world of unconditional love. The narrative is too non-linear at times, and the pace slows in the second half. That apart, it's truly path-breaking for Bollywood.

Barfi! celebrates life without dismissing the dark passages and roadblocks that we often encounter as we travel through that craggy road to death. To be able to celebrate life so warmly and sensitively the filmmaker has to know death closely. Basu, a concer survivor, has been there.Barfi! comes as close to being a modern masterpiece as cinematically possible. To miss it would be a crime. To embrace it is to serenade the sublime.

'Barfi’! does take several brave strides. It’s good in many ways; what stops it from being a great film is a degree of fuzziness, and an insistence on prettiness.Still, I’d weigh in on the film’s side. It is so hard to find a Hindi film which does disability with any seriousness, and with sensitivity. ‘Barfi’ has its heart in the right place, and doesn’t waver from its intentions

From start to finish, director Anurag Basu never gives up on Barfi's quirkiness. The storytelling leaves you positive, rekindling a lost belief in old-style, unconditional loving. For someone who cries easily at the movies, Barfi! is a thorough tearjerker. Dissecting a film that left you speechless is difficult. Just let go, indulge in the magic of Barfi!

Ratings:3.5/5 Review by Roshni Devi Site:Koimoi
What’s Good: The spell-binding direction; the wonderful performances; the cinematography and the music. What’s Bad: The movie stretches a bit; the plot gets convoluted in between.Loo Break: None.Watch or Not?: Barfi! is a movie that will tickle you and bring tears to your eyes with equal ease. Don’t miss this sweet story.Barfi! leaves you with that warm, cuddly, magical feeling with a few tears to match. It’s really worth a watch.

Ranbir Kapoor has proved he’s the actor in town. And Barfi is one more addition to the films we’ll remember him for. Barfi! is that rare film that can make you smile and make you cry in the same scene. Its technical brilliance is only outdone by its emotional complexity and depth. Pritam’s music adds a nice silent-era charm to this already fantastic story, making it an occasion when words simply aren’t enough.

BARFI! is a one-man show - Ranbir Kapoor.Barfi and Jhilmil together is just not logic. It is tragic. Take away the character of Jhilmil and Basu would have been on a roll. There are a few poignant moments in the film and this is thanks to the three 'bechara characters' who tug at your heart. Visually, the film is appealing. It has a different treatment and a hatke cinematic appeal. The three star rating is not for the brilliance of the film; it's for the genius of Ranbir Kapoor. A performance worth a watch!

All praises aside Barfi isn’t short of its minuses. There are moments when the film gets droopy, with two of the primary three characters not having any dialogues; the silence gets unnerving that you fight the urge to not get distracted. However thankfully Ranbir flawless act saves the day. With heaps of charm and poignancy, Barfi traces human spirit, relationships, thru chaplinesque comedy in some parts and smiles through tears in many others. You get as involved in Barfi’s journey as all his fellow co-stars and you’re taken on this breezy ride with the right amounts of effervescence, leaving you with warmth in your heart.

Cant we just feel happy when our favourites films work and let others also get on with their life . in the end they are all actors who are doing there jobs and supporting their loved ones none of the actors the ones we like and not like have EVER personally done anything bad to us fans.no reason to abuse say filth abt them .

    2. Very, Very Well Said!!!!!!! :-) After reading the comments above I was aghast on seeing unnecessary stuff being told about Salman and Ranbir... Everyone has an opinion of his own.. But they should learn to respect the opinion of the others as well... I'm a movie freak and loved Barfi! But why criticize Salman's movies for that.. Each film caters to a certain audience and there ends the issue! You don't like it - Fine! You loved it - Awesome! But you need to finger the other's ass and try to prove that you are right.. Cuz every person thinks that his opinion is right and you can't change that..!
So now just watch movies and enjoy!

    1. *recipe for 100 cr. films :

      1. Get a famous action hero & production house who can spend.
      2. Don't need story. But have to show something between action & item songs , so copy that portion (which they say story) from South films. With ready - made action absolutely free ! Or if not then copy it from previous hindi films! With no logic at all & hero always doing meaningless action in slow motion
      3. Put an item song in it . No matters is it the need of story. Because no story at all in ur movie!
      4. Put meaningless scenes & mass appealing dialogues.
      5. Now need to promote. Show the trailers with slow motion illogical action & item song & people like u already decides to go!For others go with a starcast in every channel & promote ur movie as if , if u don't see this movie , ur unfit to live in this world.

Perfect dish ready & fools like u above are ready to go to watch ur hero taking off the shirt !

  39. why does every person bring salman khan's name in any and everything for godsake SUPPORT your favourites but DONT abuse others especially Mr.Salman Khan (and no he's not my favourite actor) Aamir is but i feel bad when his name is dragged into everything for no reason.
Cant we just feel happy when our favourites films work and let others also get on with their life . in the end they are all actors who are doing there jobs and supporting their loved ones none of the actors the ones we like and not like have EVER personally done anything bad to us fans.no reason to abuse say filth abt them .

  41. Because of people like you promoting ETT, Rowdy rathore , Bodyguard(hindi version),Daban, the no of tamil dubbed movies are more shown in movie channel(star gold, UTV movies etc). Start promoting innovation . not that same old masala which the south people celebrate. South people are cheepos . i dont understand why they dont get fedup with the same flavour for last 100 yrs. i being a south indian am stricty against such movies . producers and directors should take inspiration from Zindagi naa milegi doobara.

  48. There is a reason that India has a reputation of churning out the most senseless movies in the entire world. People outside India laugh at our movie industry. And the reason is obvious. Its the people who love to watch senseless movies and make them superhits e.g. Ek tha tiger, Housefull etc. I am surprised to see people criticising Barfi as being a super bore movie. Barfi is one of the best movie ever made in any of the many Indian film industries. Its a master piece. But sadly as someone said earlier, it won't earn big bucks because people in India just don't appreciate or has ability to understand a good cinema.

  49. Those who didn't like Barfi, don't have a heart, emotions, sentiments anything. Guys look at urself in mirror and see what you became.

Anyways barfi is heart-touching movie and has light moments which makes you laugh at every two minutes (If you can understand them). It teaches how one should live. The biggest thing in life is not money, but people and their love for you.

  51. I saw the movie Burfii 2 days back and still thinking about it. Now there are some movies which you watch for fun and then forget.. you have a good time in a theatre and it ends there.. While there are some which leaves an impression on you.. Well this is one such movie. The story is about mute and deaf ordinary guy who is full of life. He believes in making people happy and is untouched by society's rules and regulations..
The story is about guy who set an example of extraordinary love.. a love which most of people tries to find in their whole lifetime.. There are moments in the movie which are so simple and innocent but it touches the heart. Also the songs and lyrics of song are awesome. I heard a new voice in the songs and it catched my attention very first time i heard it. Then i realized it is very similar to Bryan Adams voice.

I loved the movie. I cried, i laughed and i am still thinking about it..

    Someone has truly said..

The most precious things in world are free.. laughter, joy, love..

    1. Keep on crying all the time during the movie and dont find fault with public and critic for not sharing your views.Cinema is meant for enjoyments and relaxation. And there also so same emotional drama, rona dhona it is sickening to watch this movie and a highly boring adventure.

  60. I'm glad there is a certain number of people out there who agree that the film Barfi sucked. I completely agree.

Watching the movie was nothing but pure torture for me. I had no idea it would be such bad film.

For a start I found it completely unfunny. There wasn't a second of humor in the film. everything seems very forced and terribly lame. Every gag fell on its face. I think people with a very unintelligent sense of humor might find this film extremely funny. I was one of very few people in the hall who didn't laugh at all.

Next, the acting. Ranbir Kapoor IMHO has no acting skills. In fact I'd go forward and say probably 99% of the people working in Bollywood CANNOT act. And when I mean act i don't mean the charade they pull with directors and producers or the Oral sex they engage in to get ahead with their lives. I simply mean bringing to life characters on screen. They SUCK and Mr Kapoor is no exception. I'm surprised by how easily he's become such a popular actor in India considering he has neither good looks or any kind of talent. Even his physique is very uninspiring for either sex. His perpetually glazed lost look seems to mesmerizing a lot of people in India. Maybe we're looking at a nationwide epidemic of mental illness. I don't know.

And if looking at Ranbirs half assed antics onscreen wasn't boring enough, one had to deal with Priyanka Chopras terrible acting and her HUGE ASS lips. To rephrase Eddie Murphy, Priyanka Chopras lips are so big she has BLACK people saying: YOU GOT SOME BIG ASS LIPS! Terrible acting.

The music? It speaks for itself. Pritam is a hack and a thief and ideally should be locked up with no access to a computer.

It's ironic how cinema is so messed up and uninspired. There have been a gazillion films made in the past about people with disabilities who are in love etc and probably all of them KILL Barfi in every way.

In closing Barfi is nothing more than a modern day EXPLOITATION film that exploits both people with disabilities as well as other people with a disability to think for the sake of making money.

This review will stand in stark contrast to Barfi fans on this board who you'll notice have a difficult time putting proper sentences together.
