Intermittently gripping and slow-burning, Special Ops, an eight-episode Hotstar series created by Neeraj Pandey, is a sprawling espionage actioner that takes its own sweet time to glide towards two suspenseful climactic build-ups. One of them is a genuine now-or-never flashpoint, the other turns out to be something akin to a red herring despite whipping up a fair degree of tension and anticipation. That is the kind of thriller this is: a mixed bag, steady and neat in the matter of laying out the details but a tad tentative, if not wholly feeble, with its final punch.

Further, what really proves to be a disservice to Special Ops is the stealth of its narrative. This could be a creative choice on the part of the directors to evoke a similar sense of frustration that the auditing committee feels when Himmat deftly dodges their unending interrogation. The strategy could have worked had the narrative not rudderlessly meandered till almost its halfway mark, making the show a terribly arduous watch. By the time it picks up the pace and the pieces start fitting into the jigsaw, you have already lost your patience.

Special Ops would have been special had it restricted itself to a 30-minute episode length and tighter writing. Many a time it takes such a roundabout way to reach the point, that you almost lose your focus, but Menon and his scenes bring you back on track. Pandey, who wished to give us an insight into the tough world of being a spy, with their backstories and the feels of how alienating it can be, ends up giving us a meandering, long drawn out saga.

If I ever get a chance to takeover Neeraj Pandey’s mind, I will try to learn his trick to bring audience to the edge of the seat. Gifting Hotstar its first ever worth Original, Writer Neeraj Pandey, Director Shivam Nair and the man with a charming calibre Kay Kay Menon with their espionage thriller have left me thrilled and I am impressed.

As much as I make light of Special Ops, the truth is that it isn’t too different from those thrillers and spy movies that Hollywood churns out, and which, till about a few years ago, critics in India would treat as ‘Gifts from the White Gods’ (I am also including in this gang of critics, people who were Marvel fans — before Scorsese lit them up).

Because of Neeraj Pandey, one might expect it to be a cleverly crafted series with great twists. Much like what we all felt in Special 26, when an entire team of officers was revealed to be a mere distraction. But then, he is also the man who gave us a disaster in the form of Aiyaary. And Special Ops is more like Aiyaary (sadly) with its forced slow-motion scenes, predictable twists, absence of logic and poorly executed story.
