These are small mercies in an overlong, derivative film that fails to exploit the potential of what its own title promises. The madness feels laboured, where’s the inspired lunacy? I’m going with one-and-a-half of five for Pagalpanti.

Pagalpanti is so soul-sucking and brain-dead that it makes Bazmee’s last film Mubarakan look like high art. John said in an interview that they made this film to spread happiness but I came out depressed. In a few weeks, we will be entering a new decade. Hindi cinema needs to be better than this.

Anees Bazmee’s direction is fairly nice. However, his narration is not good enough to make the shoddily written drama a laugh riot which the film ought to have been. On the whole, Pagalpanti is not at all the laugh riot it should’ve been. It will, therefore, prove to be a flop at the box-office.

Director Anees Bazmee, along with his co-writers, throw in everything into the mix. From exciting car chases to high-octane destruction scenes, from African lions to an entire act involving industrial strength glue – all shot beautifully in the picturesque UK. But nothing sticks, thanks to a weak script. There are far too many songs placed randomly that only add to the runtime. Towards the end, it even meanders into a patriotic subplot that seems more forced. Even with an enviable starcast and heavy-duty action, Pagalpanti never really manages to pull off more than a few laughs.

If there is anything at all in Pagalpanti that could be given a thumbs up, it is the fact that the makers of the film make no bones about their shin-level ambition. They think being utterly absurd makes sense. But does sinking so much money into something so maddeningly frivolous a good idea? Certainly not if the lunacy on show isn’t of the inspired variety. Pagalpanti does deliver something akin to the madhouse that it promises but its loony-bin approach to hilarity is too dated to be effective

Earlier this year, I began my Total Dhamaal review by lamenting how once ‘leave your brains behind’ served as a sorry excuse to tolerate inane comedies. Now it’s an unabashed selling point. Flash forward few months later: Pagalpanti. It even throws in a song insisting Dimaag Mat Lagana. Both have Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and tons of idiocy in common. There’s not a shred of cheek in that disclaimer or Anees Bazmee’s pathetically dull drivel doling out juvenile junk per frame in the garb of funny business.

The plot, written by a minor army of writers, isn’t hectic as much as it is inchoate. Every scene is crammed with major and minor players – apart from the trip to England, the production also seems to have worked as an employment guarantee scheme. Among those who retain their dignity are Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Arshad Warsi and Brijendra Kala. The rest keep scrunching their faces and flapping about in an attempt to breathe life into an effort that is about as sincere as one of Nirav Modi’s schemes.

Pagalpanti will also disappoint Anees Bazmee fans keen on the maker’s peculiar brand of infantile humour. Apart from a man sticking a banana to another’s temple in an attempt to fleece him, there’s little to inspire your lips to curl upwards. What’s worse, this 165-minute debacle is a never-ending affair, with more dance numbers than you can care and unnecessary plot deviations to introduce additional characters into the fold.
Much like the graphic PSAs warning us about the consumption of tobacco, this film needs to be flagged as injurious to the brain.

‘Pagalpanti’ is a chaotic comedy of errors that makes you want to pull your eyeballs out from sheer frustration. How this hare-brained comedy get greenlit may remain one of the biggest mysteries of 2019. Avoid this comedy with all your might. It’s a movie which will induce a migraine, even for those who don’t suffer from that condition.

When you go in for what has been touted as a mindless comedy and were enjoying it too, mind you, only to be hit by a dose of misplaced patriotism towards the end, you are flummoxed. But if you are a fan of Anees Bazmee’s brand of comedy, and enjoy physical humour, you will no doubt have a riot at the cinemas. Pagalpanti, as the makers promise, is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family, since the comedy for the better part is clean. Just don’t expect the laughs to last long.
