The Lion King is visually stunning. It’s impossible to buy into a beautifully rendered, absolutely natural-looking lion, who also talks. The original The Lion King had gorgeous hand-drawn animation, oodles of charm and a great, beating heart. Which is why it’s one of the most successful animated movies of all time. This one is almost a frame-to-frame remake. I marveled at the painstaking workmanship but it was hard to feel any emotion. So if you want to give The Lion King a shot, my advice is, see it in Hindi. In English, it will be even more forgettable.

But there’s only so much mileage you can get on nostalgia. ‘The Lion King’ is a shot-by-shot, track-by-track remake which highlights the challenge with the onslaught of live-action re-creations. Is it preferable to stick to the source material, or does it make sense to change it up for current audiences? Jon Favreau prefers to play it safe here, and although that may leave an impression on new audiences, those who have grown up on the animated classic might struggle to find their childhood sentiments revived. Nevertheless, watching this family-favourite come to life will trigger enough awe-inspiring moments thanks to its visual achievements, and that itself warrants a trip to your nearest 3D screen.

The Lion King sways between the visually magnificent and the underwhelmingly sedate. The vistas that stretch out deep into every frame and the evocative movements that the animation conjures up are alluring, but the film fails to back them up with the kind of dramatic highs that might have helped the film to ascend to the dizzying heights that The Lion King of a quarter-century ago attained. Watch The Lion King for the way it looks – there is much here to keep you hooked – if not for what it serves up by way of substance.

It seems the Circle of Life nowadays is being a grown man watching a Disney reboot of a beloved animated film from childhood. We’ve had three of those this summer alone, and the latest – a remake of one of their greatest – The Lion King is aggressively mediocre in every department except for the visuals. Make no mistake, this is one of the most beautiful looking films ever made, but it lacks both heart and nuance.

The child in me was too excited but as an adult I was left wanting for a little more than what I witnessed. ‘Hakuna Matata’ take your child or inner child along while watching the film!

For a film riding on nostalgia, The Lion King serves emotions, but those that have more to do with the marvel for how far the technology has come. While the fine computer animation is to be credited it for, one can also ponder over if that’s something that restricts the characters’ emotions. Because for the pursuit of realism, it seems the makers have journeyed away from the idea of characters emoting themselves in a stylised way, which was one of the main strengths of the original. Also, the more real-life looking look and feel of the animals makes them devoid of the distinguishing features that the original boasts of. Like, this Scar doesn’t quite look like its exalted self.
