Other than that, there’s not much to savour here. The villains are bland, and although some of them have pretty cool powers, their motivations are as derivative as their personalities. There is intrigue around the relationship between Riza (Rebecca Ferguson) and Agent H, but it is barely explored. An obligatory twist towards the climax has a storytelling element that holds promise. Sadly, it comes a little too late in the proceedings. Despite all its shortcomings, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson fans may be able to sit this through, simply because their screen presence is so magnetic and charming. Pity they’re working with such a bland script, ending in a film that seems to cater to new audiences, rather than those who grew up watching the edgier MIB movies before it.

MiB: International, however, is a shockingly unambitious film; unfunny, unmemorable, and for most of its two-hour duration, utterly unbearable. It is at once overly complicated, yet plotless – which leaves you with the decidedly upsetting feeling of being left behind, but with absolutely no desire to catch up. It’s a lose-lose situation, one that even the usually reliable Chris Hemsworth can’t correct. He’s paired with his Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson here, but the film has absolutely no idea what to do with them. Want odd-couple banter? Sure. Quips and hijinks? Why not. How about some romance? At this point, I don’t even care.

Twenty years later we now have a third sequel that waters down everything that made the original great – replacing pitch black comedy with run-of-the-mill machine generated jokes, shifting the VFX focus to make things grand, and a villain who is not just not threatening but also straight out of a video game cut scene. How did things come to this level? It’s almost like someone wanted this franchise to be run to the ground.

MIB International has some good visual effects, if you look really hard for the positives in the film. The locations are exotic. That’s about it.In short, MIB International is like eating stale and disappointing fruitcake after being promised blueberry cheesecake. Go for MIB International only if you just want to see Chris Hemsworth give a smolder at the camera. 1.5 stars for MIB, and that’s only for the aliens.

This time around there’s a woman in black too (two, actually), and about the only time this installment comes to life is when newbie Tessa, and old-hand Emma, both the Thompson ladies, are kicking butt. The rest of it is pretty much a seen-it-done-it-dusted-it, why-am-I-watching-this-kinda flick-
