The film also suffers from severe tonal shifts especially with humour that doesn’t always work. The final act commits to CGI mayhem with some genuinely absurd visual effects. However, the biggest issue is – although based on a novel released in 1973, the magical-fantasy themes remind you of other popular franchises, with hardly anything new or inventive on offer here. Still, the spirited combination of Black and Blanchett along with gorgeous production and costume design, make this an entertaining family adventure.

Despite its relatively compact run-time of an hour and 45 minutes, The House With A Clock In Its Walls will have you watching the clock. It isn’t a bad film, merely a blah one. If the makers intend to adapt more of the Lewis Barnavelt books for the big screen, perhaps they should take a leaf or two out of the best children’s films of our age before attempting another yawn-inducing adventure.

Adapted from a 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs, “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” is a fantasy film, vaguely on the lines of Harry Potter. It is an all-too-familiar story of an orphan who picks up some magic tricks when he goes to live with his uncle in a house that ticks.
