Singham Returns Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

What I especially enjoyed in Singham Returns were its stray moments of clever, unexpected humor. Twice our hero takes it on the chin when his girlfriend, and an officer in his team, makes a joke about his age. In another scene, when Gupte’s dhongi Baba rattles off lines from the Bhagwad Gita to him, Singham quotes from the Indian Penal Code in response. At 2 hours and 22 minutes, Singham Returns feels long and occasionally plodding. There are some nice scenes that inspire police pride, but the predictable story tires you out eventually. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

SINGHAM RETURNS provides a voice to the common man and you root for the diligent cop as he wages a war against the crooks. On the whole, SINGHAM RETURNS is a complete mass entertainer with power-packed drama, hi-intensity dialogue and towering performances as its aces. The brand value attached to it coupled with a long weekend will help the film reap a harvest and rule the box-office in days to come. A sure-shot WINNER!

On the whole, Singham Returns is entertainment to the fullest. It will turn out to be a huge hit. It may not be as memorable a film as Singham but it is, nevertheless, an immensely entertaining film and its business will be far, far more than that of Singham. It will definitely prove to be the highest-grossing film of Ajay Devgan’s career so far. Business in Maharashtra will be simply stupendous!

The plot rumbles with action of seismic proportions, shot grandly in signature Shetty style – high-voltage stunts, death-defying combats, men and machines bursting into flames – served bloody, gritty and unadulterated. Shetty’s cracked the pulse of the masses as he brazenly plays to the galleries. While the story itself plays it safe (too basic and predictable), the action is risky and rousing. But overall, it provides entertainment for enthusiasts of ‘Singham’ brand of cinema.

The weakest link is the tedious romantic angle between Ajay and Kareena Kapoor, who plays his gluttonous girlfriend. Kareena’s beauty is startling, but here she’s not even attempting to act. Despite these soft spots, Ajay keeps the film moving. I was cheering for Singham, but ultimately his solutions are downright dangerous. I don’t want to tell you what happens, but it made me very uneasy.

Even if unabashedly playing to the gallery and formulaic to its core, Singham Returns offers quite a bit to whistle about with its steady supply of straightforward action and a hot-headed hero who delivers a punch with a fist and a line. Though marginally better, Singham Returns is plagued by the same problem as the first one. It slows down in the middle to accommodate an obligatory romance with Kareena. Is that good enough? Wrong question. Is it entertaining enough? Er, yeah.

In Singham Returns, the unstoppable protagonist is once again fighting for freedom from the tyranny of the system. Singham Returns has a fair sprinkling of angry wisecracks that might draw spontaneous whistles and loud claps from those that love violent fights to the finish. One can only hope that this is indeed the end, and another sequel isn’t lurking in the future.

The sequel to ‘Singham’ is chock-full of the usual car-on-jeep action. Explosions go off at regular intervals. Shoot-outs—one really well-shot– occur frequently. Like last time, invincible cop Bajirao Singham cracks a carbine single-handedly when the going gets tough. It’s all there, including the strictly kindergarten level plotting.

This film does show the frustration that the police must be going through but there is no way this is going to inspire the real cops. Even if it does, there is little they will be able to do because Singham and his men in uniform are not seen doing much within the confines of the law. The dream team of Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn delivers a good entertainer. It’s for fans of brand Singham and I’m sure they are all out there in large numbers.

The story line so simplistic that it turns the otherwise supposedly shrewd villains into bumbling idiots with no set plan in hand and they get caught in Singham’s claws rather too easily. But then the absence of a plausible plot is made up with the adrenalin-pumping , fighting against gravity, whistle worthy action sequences

Shetty puts together a convincing film despite a predictable story of godmen and corrupt politicians which has been seen in Indian cinema over and over again (and probably in better stories) and a plot that unravels a little after the interval.Despite it all Devgn and Shetty should be able to score decently at the box office. Don’t forget this is a film and not real life and don’t question the sequence of events that take place if you want to enjoy it.

Apart from being part-action, part-romantic and part-political, ‘Singham Returns’ is also part-confused..Clearly, Rohit Shetty is attempting to go the extra mile, even though he isn’t putting any thought to it. Skip ‘Singham Returns’ if you don’t want to lose your mind or if you don’t have the courage to stomach meaningless Bollywood masala films.

Singham Returns scared the daylight out of me. No it wasn’t a horror film, but it shocked me to see a Rohit Shetty film so devoid of fun.  Not novel, frequently bizarre with some really lame vintage jokes to poke fun, the dude can amuse you surely. But when that fun factor is sucked out of his film, assume that something has gone gravely amiss. Singham Returns is a shabby replica of its earlier edition, working on the same contours, never stretching the plotline nor trying anything new.

  3. SINGHAM RETURNS: "Singham Returns, but not his magic!"
    [2.5/5]

In 2011, Singham came, roared and captured many hearts & a lot was expected from this super-cop as he came out of his den yet again with Singham Returns. Unfortunately, despite Ajay Devgn’s immense efforts, it ended up being a disappointing & confused action thriller. For me, the main spoiler was Kareena Kapoor with her over-energetic and over-enthusiastic portrayal.

The plot starts with a police constable being found dead along with an enormous sum of money and is later on charged of being corrupt. The now DCP Singham, discovers the conspiracy behind it and also its masterminds who then kill Singham’s mentor and a noble politician, Guruji. How Singham tackles these gundas and once again saves the state is the story that follows.

Rohit Shetty tries really hard to make the sequel grand by inducing more power politics, more singham powers, more big actors, more nonsensical comedy, more over the top action, more save the country philosophy, more social messages ,more media, more glamour & definitely more ‘Cars’ but it’s nothing more than a failed over-ambitious attempt.

He overdid a lot of Singham elements especially "Aata Majhi Satakli", which kept repeating in every ten minutes. However, the quality of film-making surely improved for Rohit. The way Singham Returns was shot was very vibrant and appealing to the eyes. The Rohit Shetty crew really deserves all the credit to take his technical skills a level up.

The movie’s runtime was almost two and a half hours which seems way too long – bad piece of work from the editor. The scope for cutting down illogical Kareena Kapoor scenes was enormous.

The music is below average and there is no exceptional song that just makes you go wow! Though Aata Majhi Satakli is catchy, but forgettable. This music album didn’t really work out for Meet Bros Anjjan.

To my realisation one thing is clear that only Ajay Devgn can totally pull off the role of Singham and the sole reason for watching the movie is his intensity which cannot be matched by any of his counterparts. His eyes are just enough to make you believe that a super-cop like Singham could exist and his voice and delivery makes ordinary dialogues look real classy. If Singham works for me, it is only Ajay who makes it happen.

As much as Ajay was brilliant in his portrayal, Kareena was dreadfully irritating as Avni. This was perhaps the most over-acting done by her. Probably If she would not have been in the movie, I would have given it an extra star.

Amol gupte really tried hard to do a Prakash Raj but failed terribly. He was far from menacing and his caricatured character made it worse. Also, the Amercian Dasiyan never really helped. Dayanand Shetty aka Daya is Daya, Cut-Copy-Paste from C.I.D. There is also a special sequence where Singham order "Daya- Daya Darwaza Tod". Ashwini Kalsekar did okay playing the stereotypical media journalist rather a Barkha Dutt copy. Zakir Hussain is average and offers nothing different or new. Anupam Kher is above average in his short and very predictable character. Mahesh Manjrekar suits perfectly in his role of the righteous politician. Sameer Dharmadhikari, Pankaj Tripathi have been poorly utilized. A special mention to the actress who played the dead police constable’s wife had a sequence with Ajay Devgn in which she was amazing. Also, Ashok Saraf (from Singham 1) too was missed.

In all, Singham Returns is yet again a Ajay Devgn show but this time with no one there to support him.
    Watchable.

  4. Very nicely written,great review

  5. Thanks 🙂

  6. Plz save your money ..if you aren't Ajay devgan's die hard fan..plz avoid ..its complete waste…not a single thing to watch…from start to end… Nothing at all… Too few half comic scenes with Gujarati….

  7. Hello Gaurav, i typically go straight to your reviews. Thank you for the service, love it. Have been meaning to ask you something. Can i request you to incorporate one more detail in your reviews? Could you include some details would help decide whether to watch movies with kids and family? Things that would help – how many bedroom scenes, nude(like) scenes, kisses, gory killings, explicit or implicit references to gay/lesbianism, etc. You don't have to form opinion, just facts. Or if you know of some other website / blogger, that does that, that would work too. I know personal tolerances are different from one family to another, but its hard to read any of these critiques and get an idea. I'm sure there are tons of people needing this kind of help to decide if it passes their personal tolerance level. I've seen such details on redbox.com, netflix.com etc for american movies, but we need it for Indian audiances for indian movies. Everything is "R" and we often either end up showing no movies, or end up being more liberal than we want to with our kids.

  8. Hi Amish, I really appreciate your concern. You are one of very few such responsible parents. first thing first, I love your suggestion and i am definitely going to take it forward. Though I strongly feel until our censor board act smart, we can do very little as the transparency in ratings is completely a miss. Yet, go to the link mentioned below…

Ms. Anna is a professional and renowned in the field. She's very particular about what the film is offering and where it hits the most. One of my favorites!

thanks for showing such important concern! you have made me strong about the idea and i will certainly keep this in mind from the next time.

    keep writing!

  9. Rohit Shetty has been given a tag of ‘Hit Machine’ because of his spectacular track record in the recent years. Golmaal (Series), All the Best, Bol Bachchan, Chennai Express, all have added wonderful numbers, for the director, at the box office. Usually accused of a poor storyline, Rohit Shetty proved all the critics wrong with his much acclaimed film, Singham. A sequel was much awaited and here it is, this week.

‘Singham Returns’ revolves around Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn), who is yet again in the role of an honest police officer. The story takes a turn when an officer from his squad is found dead with a huge amount of money and is alleged of being corrupt. Singham does not believe this and tries his best to reveal the mystery.
In parallel, runs the story of Guruji (Anupam Kher), an honest politician, trying his best to bring a change in the whole system while his counterparts Prakash Rao (Zakir Hussain) and Satyaraj Baba (Amole Gupte) are trying their best to politically exploit the corrupt Indian system.

Singham Returns is on similar tones like its prequel where it just remains a battle between the good and the bad. Rohit Shetty, yet again, tries his best to give you a power packed drama but forgets to exclude the unnecessary evils from his film. The pace of the first half, the useless love sequences between the leading pair or the stupid comic punches give you such a bad taste that you even tend to forget the positives of the film.

No matter how good or bad the film is, you just cannot hate Ajay Devgn’s role. He pulls it off with ease, brilliantly done. Kareena Kapoor Khan remained a complete waste. Amole Gupte is outstanding, a character you certainly can’t afford to miss. Anupam Kher, Zakhir Hussain and Mahesh Manjrekar are decent.

Overall, Singham Returns limits itself only to a one time watch in spite of so much potential in the plot. Just a small advice, keep your expectations low!

    Rating- 2.5/5
