What the Fish Movie Review

As offensive as it is plain pointless, this film has no qualms about making jokes related to leprosy, deaf-mute people, and even innocent small-town girls seduced by cunning city-slickers. To be honest, there’s no redeeming quality to this film: not one scene, not a single character. It’s like an endurance test that director Gurmmeet Singh puts you through. My rating, you ask? You’ve got to be kidding…WTF???

On the whole, WHAT THE FISH is just another one of the mass-produced comedy dramas that work with the audience when they are in a group. Unfortunately, when watching the film, one can’t help but wonder what the title, WHAT THE FISH, really means and how does the film derive such a title for a seemingly comic storyline.

. The aim of the writers is to tickle the audience’s funny bone but rarely do they succeed because the incidents serve to irritate more than entertain. Gurmmeet Singh’s direction is ordinary. His narrative style does not succeed in keeping the audience’s interest alive for too long. Of course, the weak script is also to be blamed. On the whole, What The Fish will meet with a disastrous fate at the ticket windows.

I’m certain that I have lost some brain cells in the two hours that I invested into this utterly brainless escapade. What the Fish is basically cinema as root canal. I suffered it so that you don’t have to. I’m going with half star.

What the Fish has a promising premise and an intriguing start but runs out of steam way too soon. A few minutes into the movie and you’d already guess what the climax could be. The non-linear narrative manages to engage you in the beginning but lack of humour and interesting characters make the execution look a tad tiresome and repetitive. The ‘idea’ behind the movie can be appreciated for its novelty but it fails to develop into a full-fledged comedy of errors, which was the intention. If you like funny movies, there are plenty more fish in the sea.

It’s rare to see a Hindi film bereft of a heroic character, and not just does this film not have a singular true protagonist, but it features a slew of exclusively selfish characters, almost all of whom lamentably take the aforementioned fish for granted. It’s one thing for moronic characters to take a fish for granted, but entirely — and unforgivably — another for a director to do the same with this audience. Fry it again, director.

WTF’s first half blazes by and feels dramatically shorter than the length it actually is, even though at 102 minutes, the film hardly taxes you with its length. In the second half, the characters get progressively more bizarre but the writing less consistent and WTF begins to stumble and gets a little wearisome with its repetition. What the Fish’s wacky brand of humor works half the time but confounds in equal measure. It touches no chords and remains consciously superficial but it does have an ensemble that has clicked in a story oddly fresh in these times.

This is yet another in the line of the Quirky Delhi Film, a genre that has long run out of steam. The novelty lasts for a few minutes. After which it’s all downhill. Dimple Kapadia is completely capable of carrying a film on her own: remember ‘Leela’, in which she is a credible middle-aged woman in search of herself? Here, she’s a sad caricature of a loud Dilli aunty, and she’s all wrongly played for the part. Rishi and Singh try to grab a few moments but are wasted.

When a film is titled What The Fish, it reads aloud the cue for you to make a dash for the next film-viewing option. An absolutely lame and ridiculous film barring Dimple Kapadia’s scorching screen presence, it makes no pretense about being utterly stupid. It is an empty film with no thrill, no excitement and mostly no fun
