Unlike Vikram’s previous endeavours, HORROR STORY doesn’t have space for romance, skin show and songs. Consequently, and rightly so, the run time is limited to a sharp 1.30 hours, so that the viewer stays focussed. The motive is to create a hardcore scarefest, focusing on seven youngsters and a haunted hotel. On the whole, HORROR STORY should be liked by horror film buffs and those who relish this genre. Most importantly, it lives up to its promise of providing chills and thrills in those crisp 1.30 hours, which should work with its target audience. Additionally, the low costs should ensure decent profits at the end of the day and help create a franchise in times to come.

This is the highest rating I’ve given to a horror film. I’m not sure I’d have rated even the widely acclaimed The Conjuring much higher. But it’s me, not the genre. No matter how hard I try, horror movies don’t affect me. Even when am alone, in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere. Instead of spooks, all I see is a bunch of genre tropes being recycled over and over again. So while I’m not jumping out my seat any time soon, if you’re even mildly impacted by bounding chudails, doors slamming on their own accord, and eerie whispering, Horror Story may have you do it at least a few times.

Barring a scene, where you see an empty wheelchair moving around the hotel corridors, the rest fails to send shivers down your spine. You get bored of the running around. With no major scares, the film gets tedious and even 90 minutes seem like never-ending. The back story of the ghost is equally lame. The performances and cinematography are not effective either. We like Vikram Bhatt’s brand of horror but this Horror Story was more silly than scary.

At one-and-a-half odd hours, the film is unusually long. The first half of the film drags as much as it possibly can The second half offers some respite because the director has been kind enough to explain why the ghost refuses to leave the poor kids alone . The ghost and its back story seem to be lifted from films like The Exorcist, The Uninvited and The Ring. All in all, if you like being horrified at things such as lack of logic or Bollywood films ‘paying tribute’ to their Hollywood counterparts, Horror Story is for you. Otherwise, run as fast as you can before Horror Story turns into Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahi.

The premise is interesting, but the execution is weak. Dialogues are super corny and Ayush hasn’t been able to capture the mood of being trapped in an isolated haunted building in the right sense. Yes, the doors creak and the hinges make eerie sounds, but what’s new ? In a time when the super success of The Conjuring should excite film makers of the genre, Horror Story relies too much on the tried and tested formula.Engaging in fleeting moments, Horror Story might appeal to those who get scared easily.

What’s Good: The film is laden with spookily created jarring sounds and successfully builds the fearsome aura. What’s Bad: The film is heavily inspired from flicks like The Exorcist along with the climax turning into a bhoot-fair of sorts! Watch or Not?: Vikram Bhatt’s expertise over the genre is impressionable but Horror Story isn’t the best of his work. The film uses too many ideas from popular films like The Ring and lacks tremendously on elaborating the writer’s imaginative bent! It is a brazenly written, uninspired work lacking originality and freshness. You can easily give this one a miss unless you are desperate to scare yourself, in which case I assure you, the film will need a great deal of effort from your side to numb you off!
