COMMANDO attempts to encompass every stunt possible to entice the Indian viewer, which Vidyut implements as dexterously and effortlessly as Tony Jaa or Johnny Tri Nguyen. Nonetheless, films that focus on chase and action should stick to the core issue, hence the romance between the lead pair [in the first half of the film], the mandatory songs [especially the one filmed in Kutch, again the first hour] and the political interference [in the second hour] appear completely forced in the scheme of things. But these shortcomings are pardonable, to a large extent, for the reason that the action sequences keep you mesmerized largely. On the whole, COMMANDO is vintage good versus evil saga in a strikingly new avatar. A high-voltage action fare that’s racy, pulsating and packed with some adrenaline-pumping stunts. Watch it!

Dilip Ghosh’s Commando has a linear narrative. Set in North India, the story can even be termed archaic. It’s got a hero, a heroine and a villain. Enter South African action director Franz Sphilhaus. The director hands over his hero Vidyut to him and the combination is pure magic. Perhaps one of India’s best martial arts exponents (at least in the films); Vidyut is terrific. For the first time in eons, the action scenes are totally convincing…and you can digest the fact that one man can kill them all and come back alone. If you are an action junkie and if you have peaked on Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo-series, then our desi Commando, is what you will term paisa-vasool entertainment. Note: You may not like the film, if pure action, is not your staple at the movies.

How much you enjoy Commando – A One Man Army is directly dependent on how much you like action. What is your threshold for bodies breaking, bones snapping, flesh tearing, blood spurting. Mine is pretty low so I can’t say that I really enjoyed this film. But I think Vidyut Jamwal is a kick-ass action hero and Jaideep Ahlawat is a terrific villain. If you are an action fan, Commando – A One Man Army gives you enough bang for the buck. I’m going with two and a half stars. More squeamish viewers should find something else to watch.

All in all, the story is routine and the screenplay doesn’t elevate the proceedings too much. However, what really gives the film a huge, repeat, huge shot in the arm is the raw action. The death-defying stunts and action, especially of Karan Singh Dogra, are so brilliant that they mesmerise the audience. On the whole, Commando has a routine drama but extraordinary stunts. It will do very good business in single-screen cinemas on the strength of mass patronage. The excessive violence will limit both, the patronage of ladies and the film’s business potential in the multiplexes where collections will be okay. In the final tally, it will prove to be an above average fare.

It’s a very bare-bones plot, clearly meant only as backdrop for Jamwal to display admittedly impressive stunt work and physical dexterity. The fight scenes, however, aren’t shot engagingly enough and, given the unending dhishoomery prevalent in films of this type, look equally bland. And he never looks defeated or distressed, which is a shame.Make no mistake, Commando is a poor film. The thrills are never quite there and, all of Janwal’s eagerness and leapfrog-skills aside, it must be remembered that a Bowie knife does not Rambo make. Especially when he gives it away to a stupid girl.

A strapping, beefy soldier on a mission takes on a particularly repugnant small-town rogue to keep a pretty damsel out of harm’s way in this predictably visceral action flick that plays out more like a violent cut-and-thrust computer game than a movie about real, believable people. While the stunt scenes are impressively staged and filmed, the good versus evil confrontation is as old as the stunning peaks and vales around which the action unfolds. The adrenaline-pumping Commando – A One Man Army arouses about as much emotion as an early morning jog on a treadmill. .Despite all the bravura technical effort that has clearly been put into Commando, the end result simply isn’t compelling enough to merit more than two stars.

Commando is his delayed launchpad tailor-made to flaunt his biceps and show off his martial-art skills. If you go in not expecting an intelligent thriller, you won’t be disappointed. The film is an all-out no-holds-barred action extravaganza inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s classic Rambo. The storyline is simple, as a one man army, Jamwal is given the task of protecting his love interest Pooja Chopra from the bad intentions of Jaideep Ahlawat who plays the villain. Even though director Dilip Ghosh tries to have more dimensions to the linear story, his efforts are futile.Commando works because it makes no qualms about being an all-out action film that caters to the palate of those yearning to watch a fresh face in an arena crowded by ageing stars.

That an action film should have no place for song and dance is a no-brainer. Commando has a wholly superfluous hero-heroine slo-mo jig AND a bhangra-shaadi geet, AND an item number. It also has a story that creaks . Minus these irritants, it would have been a pure adrenaline rush. Step out for the popcorn when the actors break into song; rush right back in when the fists start to fly.

What’s Good: The brilliantly choreographed action sequences, Vidyut Jamwal, some faaru one liners and Jaideep Ahlawat’s villainous act. What’s Bad: Debutante Pooja Chopra’s gibberish ‘bak bak’, the loose plot, the lack luster treatment to the underlying story and an unnecessary item song dashed in just for the sake of it. Loo break: Not one, if you love action but once, maybe if you aren’t much of an action fanatic! Watch or Not?: Commando is an out and out Vidyut Jamwal film that provides him with the platform to showcase his martial arts genius with immense aplomb and in full volumes! So its definitely worth a watch.

Action for action’s sake is martial art at best, hardly a full length feature film. As you get pounded by the sound and fury of breaking bones and flying humans for over two hours non-stop, you realise this could essentially be a deeply unsatisfying, passive form of mortal combat video game where you’ll never have a console in your hands and the hero will return even if he’s shot in the tummy and thrown off a cliff with his head pointed to the rocks. He is equal to an army of 10,000 soldiers. I can see. Someday, make a proper film with him. We’d like to see that too.

    I mean TRUE GRITTTTTT

  7. I truly loved it…one of d besr action I ve ever seen in bolly keep it coming vid..

  8. The bad guy called AK 74. Can anyone remember his jokes? Its hilarious.

  9. Watched Commando- The One Man Army. The movie is about an Army officer (Captain Karanvir Dogra), trained to be a Commando who ends up across the border in the Chinese territory during a training regime and is captured by them as being an Indian spy. When this is brought to the notice of the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian government does not stand by him and decides to sweep matters under the carpet. As it turns out, the Commando escapes from the hands of the Chinese and is left to avenge himself by fighting the system singlehandedly.
The movie starts off on an interesting note where you feel that this might just be a revelation into the blinding nexus between Politics and the Armed/ Police forces in our country. However, this merely fades away into a ridiculous show of chivalry by the commando trying to save a girl (Simrit) from Himachal from a local goon (Amrit Kanwal Singh)!
I think that if one has to go watch this movie it has to be for Vidyut Jamwal playing the role of Capt. Karanvir. His entire demeanor spelled COMMANDO in capitals. And although I’m not a huge fan of heart racing, blood pumping action scenes, this one caught my fancy and of course was a welcome break from all the Rohit Shetty action that’s thrown at us these days.
Pooja Chopra who plays the role of Simrit goes way overboard with the concept of the damsel- in- distress. She emerges in pretty frocks and shorts in every gripping scene. Capt Karanvir, in an attempt to save her from the villain makes her jump off tall bridges with him, climb tall trees, gives her ayurvedic tips on surviving mosquito bites in the jungle and strategic tips on how not to leave shoe marks on the ground. Inspite of all this it does not strike her to ask him even once as to how he knows all this. And way towards the end of the movie she gets all doe- eyed and asks him “Tum ho kaun?” Duh!! She was just ridiculously trying to emulate ‘Geet’ from ‘Jab We Met’, which is suicidal.
Oh! And here comes the most hilarious part about the movie- the Villain. Yes you read this right. Amrit Kanwal Singh calls himself AK47 for some strange reason. He plays Angry Birds on his cellphone , reads silly Santa- Banta jokes before killing someone, which is a desperate attempt at inducing comedy into the script. And there is too much unnecessary flashing of his eyeball- less eyes after every ten, no, five minutes.
Commando to me was okay as a one -time watch. The background scores were sloppy with some chasing scenes given comic scores and Dabang style cowboy music for the hero. Not Again !
