Gangster Squad Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand  Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)

Gangster Squad is by no means a bad film, but it does feel underdeveloped and half-baked. There’s real spark in the film’s key conceit – that the cops must lower themselves to the same level as the gangsters to accomplish this job – but that promise is squandered away by a clumsy screenplay that doesn’t necessarily portray these cops as living by the book even before they embarked on this mission. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Gangster Squad. This is hardly classic noir, but watch it for Sean Penn and Josh Brolin’s winning performances.

Gangster Squad engages and entertains you with its occasional humour, sleek slow-motion action sequences and stylized gun violence but somewhere falls short of substance and depth. As certain righteous cops fight for honour and justice, you do not feel enough for the characters. If you like to witness the battle of good versus evil, mafia and mayhem, Gangster Squad has enough fire, guns and bullets to keep you engaged! But if you seek to explore the criminal underbelly, this may be a tad too simple for your liking.

Gangster Squad is the story of a mafia whose aim was to be the King of the business.Director Ruben Fleischer leans too hard on the violence card, but with little return in the way of excitement, and totally at the expense of the characters and storyline. It is only Sean Penn that feels completely fresh. Perhaps he was playing a layered copy of a movie stereotype. Nonetheless, he seems to be living and breathing convincingly in another time and another place. Even if this place is only a movie fantasy. Verdict: Brutal, barbaric, mixed with some good acting, a treat for all Gangster-movie lovers.
