Delhi in a Day Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Srijana Mitra Das Site:Times Of India

Delhi in a Day (DIAD) captures two Indias – its rich, glossy, affable self and its grotty, sweaty, desperate self. DIAD depicts how, despite its farmhouses, glittering cars and beautiful socialites, Delhi is a city that’s merciless to its poor, the rich sleeping in air-conditioned mansions, their servants in holes in the wall, struggling to derive some comfort from the drudgery of their lives.Still, DIAD has small problems but works as a big-hearted story, Jasper eventually leaving Delhi suffering a loss – but Rohini regaining something. It’s hard to depict a world where jharus and jazz co-exist. DIAD does that, hesitant but sensitive all the way.

Delhi In A Day is quite entertaining, and a wonderful alternative to the blockbuster of the month Ek Tha Tiger. Delhi in a Day has a clean, tight professional feel to it. Korean cinematographer Eun-ah Lee, ably captures the light and shades of Delhi, as well as the quietude and the madness of a crowded city. Composer Mathias Duplessy (also known for his work on another small Indian film, Bombay Summer) adds soulful notes to the film’s background score and a haunting closing song.

Prashant Nair has a good thing going on in Delhi In a Day. A film that could have just been a bunch of generalizations about the people of Delhi, bordering on cliché, is instead a bang on portrayal of an upper-class south Delhi household.Delhi in a Day has a tight and entertaining script which is bettered by good performances.Though it’s not “mainstream cinema”, Delhi In a Day has all the ingredients for an entertaining flick. It’s a must watch.

Actually too many things happen simultaneously in the story which enhances the chaos quotient. The script would have been more uncomplicated if Prashant Nair could have cut on some characters and their screen space. Not using a loud background score pays well for the film, it gives authenticity to the basic premise. Camera work is average but editing has been done with imagination. The second best thing about the film is director’s strict no to spoon feeding. ‘Delhi in a Day’ leaves you wondering about the class struggle and different permutations and combinations to find a proper finish to a story which is driven by random characters.Overall, ‘Delhi in a Day’ is a simple film which is not made with a preoccupied mind. It largely remains sweet but conveys the point strongly. It deserves 3 out of 5.

For a debutant, director-writer Prashant Nair has heralded a promising start though he could have focused more on the characters than the predictable climax itself. The reason being simple: the people in his film are flawed, real and engaging. It could have been any other city in the country but these folks shared the same Indian sentiments; unabashed hypocrisy being the most evident.

You can certainly include this film in your list of films to watch this week. Just don’t go in with too many expectations. This film certainly attempts to stand out and almost succeeds in doing so. So do yourself a favor and don’t judge it on the basis of its trailer, if you manage that, you’re guaranteed to have your paisa vasool.
