The Avengers Movie Review

The truth, in fact, is that even if you’re unfamiliar with the Marvel universe and the back-story of these superheroes, you’re still likely to find yourself cheering for the sheer spectacle that’s up on screen.Director Joss Whedon maintains a cracking pace, switching deftly between spectacular action sequences, and witty interaction scenes between the characters. It’s particularly remarkable how Whedon ensures that the story remains rooted in the characters, without ever compromising on the punch-ups and the adrenaline-pumping set-pieces. The film’s third act for one, a thrilling alien-bashing finale on the streets of Manhattan, is pure fanboy wet-dream.In the end, The Avengers isn’t just the ultimate spectacle, but also incredibly smart and surprisingly humorous. I’m going with four out of five for The Avengers. It raises the stakes for comic-book movies hereon… Batman and Spider-man, are you listening?

What do you expect when six mighty super heroes – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk – ‘assemble’ together on the silver screen for one common purpose? Action unlimited. High voltage drama. Larger-than-life effects. Throw in some smart one liners (humorous, of course) and you maybe in for some push button video gaming fantasy. The Avengers is not just your typical good versus evil kind of super hero flick. Here, before all scores are settled, it’s the good-versus-good hungama that keeps you glued to your seat.So here’s what you’ve got to do: Just settle down with your 3D glasses for some bang-bang stuff where special effects speak louder than guns and the super guys have nothing to fall back on, other than their muscles, reflexes and of course, their super powers….

The Avengers is wall-to-wall action, executed with a fluid coherence we don’t get to see in most superhero films, and yet what stays with you are the lines and, resultantly, the characters. As this big, meaty film — this hero sandwich of a film, even — winds down, Whedon makes us do something increasingly rare in these over-franchised times: root for a sequel. The Avengers — from ambition to scale to the way it justly balances each remarkable character — is an absolute blast, and it’s far easier to lose yourself than to find fault. It’s the most spectacular superhero party of all time. And you’re invited. Go smash.

There is little need for chatter as the impressive special effects first wow and then bludgeon you into numb acceptance. Amid all this though, Johansson registers as a woman with a dark past who knows well how to use secrets as well as how much to give out. Downey Jr gets to be his cocky, self-derisive self but the film nicely juxtaposes him against the earnest Evans. Renner and Hemsworth do their stuff in the background. It’s the quiet, unassuming Ruffalo as Bruce Banner who steals the show

What’s Good: The action scenes; seeing so many superheroes together on screen; the one-upmanship between them. What’s Bad: The build-up in the first half; the cryptic undercurrent between Black Widow and Hawkeye; people uninitiated with these heroes will probably not enjoy it as much.Verdict: The Avengers is an action packed superhero extravaganza and will do good business.Loo break: A couple during the first half.Watch or Not?: You’ll probably never get see so many heroes together with so much action! Don’t miss it.
