Safe House Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive(CNN IBN)

Borrowing a thing or two from the Bourne movies, Safe House has plot twists, double-crossing, and some high-adrenaline foot chases. The action, in fact, is nicely done, with more than a few brutal combat sequences that are not for the faint-hearted. But it’s the resolution ultimately that feels a bit anticlimactic, and not hard to guess from a mile away.Safe House isn’t a bad film, it’s just unremarkable and simplistic, a mediocre film that could’ve been so much more. I’m going with two out of five for Safe House. The only reason to watch it is for its charismatic leads.

The highs: Loads of gunshots, ruthless cop-criminal Q&A sessions, cars ramming into each other, long chases through the streets of Cape Town and the slums of Langa, smart and snazzy action cuts involving solid hand punches and enough energy to keep spirits up. The lows: Nothing that you have never seen before. But then are we complaining? Not really, especially when it’s Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds calling the shots. Needless to say, it is Denzel Washington who once again is seen doing what he does best. His facial expressions and the goatee are enough to give that suave, convincing look of a man on the run… and a man who kills only professionals. Ryan does manage to stand at par (if not above) with Denzel Washington.

For all its action, body count, and blood, Safe House is still a character-driven movie, and though some may think that they have had too many films featuring a black guy and a white man in the lead, there is a lot of vibrant chemistry between Washington and Reynolds. To hold one’s own in the presence of acting dynamo Washington is never easy. But Reynolds is quite effective as he communicates his fears and conflicts in a natural way. This is a career-making performance from him and director Espinosa. But the latter should look around for a more streamlined screenplay.

What’s Good: The action sequences; the performances. What’s Bad: The predictable screenplay; the absence of a larger motive behind the corrupt actions of the CIA agents.Verdict: Safe House entertains in parts only. It won’t do much at the Indian box-office. Loo break: A couple. Watch or Not?: Watch it for the performances and the action.
