Jodi Breakers  Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive

Intended as a romantic comedy, the film fails on both counts. The humor is pedestrian and includes tired gags involving gay bartenders, and doctors arguing during surgery. The romantic portions too are corny…particularly some long, drunken babbling about the perfect kiss. Packed with every standard romantic-movie cliché, Jodi Breakers is a strain on your nerves, and it doesn’t help that most of the cast is as dull as dishwater. Despite an interesting premise, the film doesn’t work because its characters inspire no affection. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Ashwini Chaudhary’s Jodi Breakers. Feast your eyes on the stunning Greece locales; it’s the only pleasure this film provides.

To put things in the right perspective, JODI BREAKERS is routine, clichéd and formulaic, at least initially. Add lazy and unenergetic too. Director Ashwini Chaudhary doesn’t get a grip of things, except in a couple of sequences. But the twist and turns in the post-interval portions are of an interesting variety [writer: Aakash Kaushik], with a major chunk of the second hour succeeding in making you erase whatever misgivings you may have had from the first hour. On the whole, JODI BREAKERS has an engrossing and smartly executed second half that tilts scales in its favor. The right dose of drama and romance, besides a trendy, harmonious musical score, only act as toppings.

At first glance, Jodi Breakers has a lot going for it: an unusual and interesting lead pair, fabulous outdoor location (Greece, in this case) and foot-stomping music. But the movie is let down by a script that lacks fizz and connect. Director Ashwini Chaudhary’s venture begins as a comedy but gradually morphs into romance and loses momentum in the second half. Jodi Breakers isn’t entirely without merit though. Madhavan is earnest. And Bipasha looks stunning. Together they try to make the film better than it actually is. But it simply isn’t enough.

What’s Good: A few comedy scenes; the music. What’s Bad: The defective screenplay; the uninspiring and meaningless second half. Verdict: Jodi Breakers is a dull show. It will not be able to break even.Loo break: Several.Watch or Not?: Watch it for the performances and the music, but do not expect much else.

First, I can’t classify the film. The makers have said it’s a film about dysfunctional relationships. It’s neither a love story, nor a s** comedy.A “twist” in the “plot” is timed just before the interval, when you are seriously wondering if leaving midway in an empty theatre is an option. The music by Salim Sulaiman blends into a dysfunctional film.

Not really, not with this film. It won’t be a happily after ever at the box office because Jodi Breakers, a film that had a lot of potential, is seriously flawed. There could have been comedy, there could have been romance, there could have been moments that make you go Awwww!Instead, the dialogues are juvenile, the situations are oft-seen (how many times have we seen a lusty love guru eye-balling a woman’s curves!), the supporting cast fails to, well, support and lead pair share no chemistry.

The strength of Jodi Breakers lies in its stupendous script. The pre-interval suspense element and twists leaves one enthralled. What add to the glee are some logical explanations of situations in the life of each character which justify their behavioral patterns. But, as the second half begins, screenplay gets extremely monotonous with some formulaic moments which lack novelty. Predictability further takes away the charm. Mind-boggling performances, strong storyline and dialogues leave Jodi Breakers in the category of one-time watch films. Editing, cinematography and poor portrayal of second half in terms of direction and screenplay proves fatal for the film.On the whole, Jodi Breakers falls flat in its intention to showcase a well-knitted plot. Watch out this one only for Maddy and Bips.

Bipasha and Madhavan do make an unusual Jodi and the concept of the film too was unusual but the screenplay and some un-required elements added to it steal the essence and the movie remains to be just an average one.As the basic script was good enough for the film to be called a good entertainer, the director lost it completely at the screenplay. Some scenes added were only seemed made-up and an afterthought. A good movie that remains to be just a one-time watch.

  4. Jodi Breakers is a HEART BREAKER for R Madhavan fans. As predicted (you might just consider yourself the Lord in foresight after this movie), Jodi Breakers is all about a couple trying to break other jodis and in the midst of all that they fall in love with each other. The story of the movie revolves around the disturbed relationships which often end up in break ups. The lead characters are played by R Madhavan & Bipasha Basu. Omi Vaidya has done what hes good at i.e the way he speaks his Hindi. The movie starts with R Madhavan narrating his story of divorce from his wife, loosing his much beloved car & paying a hefty alimony. He eventually ends up starting an agency for breaking marriages. The song Kuvara has topped the charts but it does not go well with the story-line and the pace of the movie.

Madhavan helps couples take divorce without having to pay any alimony. He often meets his clients in Nanos Bar. R Madhavan meets Bipasha Basu in that same bar when he misunderstands her to be his client. Bipasha Basu (Sonali) assists him to solve one such case. Their joint business starts with helping ace boxer Gajender Singh (the actor duplicates Vijender Singh's accent) divorce his ‘sexually hungry’ wife. Omi Vaidya plays the role of a Babaji, he is supposed to be addressing his disciples by reading lines given to him but that paper gets replaced by Nanos Bar Menu. Omi Vaidya does a "Chatur" again but this times theres no balatkar but there is "OLD MONK, BLOODY MARRY, etc".
R Madhavan & Bipasha Basu head to Greece to solve a new case of Milind Soman ( Mark Periera), a multi-billion dollar businessman, and his wife Dipannita Sharma (Maggi). These two hardly have any dialogs in the movie.Madhavan and Bipasha almost end up breaking Milind Soman & Dipannita Sharmas marriage. After returning back to India and after separating from his partner, Bipasha, R Madhavan suddenly starts feeling guilty for his mistake and goes about trying to set things right.

The first half of the movie has few funny moments, but it gets dull as the second half progresses. The second half of the movie is about how R Madhavan and Bipasha Basu try to get the Periera's together.
Even sweet adorable Helen (Madonna), who plays the grandmother of Milind Soman, can't help, though it's always nice to see her dancing, and her slightly bossy, lovable grandma act may remind you of your own grandmother. She's the one who really brings a smile on your face in the film.
Bipasha looks great & adds an oomph factor to the movie. Her dance moves in the song "BIPASHA" is worth watching.
There are moments in the film which could have ended in 10mins but have been unnecessarily been stretched. The first half will make you want to watch the movie but the second half will urge you to rush out of the theater.

Lame jokes, predictable story makes the audience loose interest. On the whole JODI BREAKERS is a must watch if you want to break your jodi because your partner is surely going to leave you if you make him/her watch this movie.
A huge disappointment for all R Madhavan fans, after movies like "RHTDM" and "Tannu Weds Mannu", we expect a lot better from him.
Direction and most importantly the story line should have been better.

  5. Entertaining first half..Decent movie overall!
