Nanban Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Pavithra Srinivasan Site:Rediff

In many ways Nanban isn’t really about events, plot-points or sudden twists; it’s the story of two friends who see light in their lives through another. Vijay as Paari is the life and soul of the story. You do see shades of the Hindi remake, but it has Shankar’s touches as well. Logic does go for a toss at times; there are moments when everything is too syrupy-sweet. The pace is jerky, and the voice-overs don’t really serve much purpose. And yet, it offers hope, and the promise of everything turning out good in the end. It’s perfect feel-good fare. And Vijay is at his best. Worth a watch.

as Nanban, Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots remake avoids stereotypes and goes for characters and situations that are familiar in our lives! It is a film about the importance of basic goodness and it is packaged with mass songs which will suit the palate of Tamil audiences.Shankar the showman of south has left his huge canvass aside and attempted to make something different, probably his first remake which has no larger-than-life hero or massive sets. It’s a breezy entertainer and it’s got its heart in the right placeIn the end, Nanban is an engaging film with noble intentions. It deserves viewing because films like this are hard to find.Don’t miss this film.

Shankar’s Nanban, the Tamil version of Bollywood film 3 Idiots, has hit the screens. The much-awaited movie is a package of fun, twists, good songs, story, crisp dialogues, and last but not the least – a serious message that will make the youths to watch it again and again. One can hardly find out flaws in Nanban because the story does not give you a minute time to find the errors that divert your attention. When the movies are limited to two-hour plus, Nanban amazingly takes you on a long-journey without getting noticed. The film not only entertains but sends out a strong message to the current generation.

Nanban marks the return of Shankar to a youth oriented film after Boys, that was eight years back. It also marks the return of Vijay to a completely youth centric college goer role. And boy, haven’t they gone all out to make it a success. We don’t see Vijay in the movie, it is only Panchavan Parivendhar! He has given himself completely to the role, surrendering to the demands of the script.Nanban has got more than something for everyone. It is very unlikely that a person finds such a wholesome package unsatisfying. Yes, Vijay does not show any heroism; he gives it all up for the integrity of the script. But, fans, don’t be disheartened, because what you get it lieu more than makes up for it. If you haven’t seen Three Idiots, Nanban will be an absolutely joyful experience. And if you have seen it, still go for Nanban and relive the magic; it’s worth it.

A winner is already in Shankar’s hands in the form of Three idiots. He seems to have made it crisply to suit Tamil audience. He has not made any big changes to the script and struck to the original. With Vijay underplaying his emotions and the star cast around playing their part well, Nanban ends up a sweet friend who you love to meet in your life daily.
