The Descendants Movie Review

Ratings:4/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive

The Descendants is a unique tragi-comedy that makes you look at life, family and priorities with new eyes.Life is messy, and The Descendants is a film that celebrates that. In fact, through its rather loopy, free-flowing structure, painfully real dialogues and sense of irony, writer-director Payne walks us through the emotions just as Matt struggles with every decision.Beautifully photographed and tenderly scored, The Descendants is a movie that hinges primarily on its performances, and Payne does an excellent job of making every actor deliver. In fact, I’m going to ask you to do just that – to savour Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. It’s an emotional rollercoaster ride that’ll have you smiling through that lump in your throat. Four out of five. It’s a must-watch.

So where exactly does the film score? Three places. First, the irony of its location. On one hand there’s the beautiful Hawaiian landscape, on the other hand is Clooney caught inside the four walls of a hospital room understanding the nuances of parenthood, coping with a dying, unfaithful wife and trying to strike a big corporate deal. In fact, even board meetings in fluorescent Hawaiian shirts do not ease the nerves of the actor. Second is the relationship of a never-been-around dad with a rebel of a teenage daughter and her I’m-so-cool boyfriend. Lastly, it’s Clooney himself — sometimes as the dad who gets all scandalised and worked up each time his daughters swear, sometimes as the restless and helpless, ever questioning husband. Special mention: Watch Clooney convince his wife’s boyfriend to make it for one the last time to the hospital and his dying wife.

The film is life as you see it, live it. No pretense, no filmy dramatization. Without getting mushy, the filmmaker showcases the everyday life of common people who just happen to live on an exotic island. It won’t be wrong to say that every moment in the film is cathartic. Clooney is outstanding. His eyes do the talking and this is undoubtedly one of his finest mature performances. He moistens your eyes without shedding a single tear!.The Descendants is about collecting the pieces of your broken heart and moving on with life. It’s an emotional roller coaster ride that you must take to value what you possess – your family.

The Descendants is a definitive tour de force in writer-director Payne’s staccato career, a film in which all his recurring themes — middle-aged protagonist at the cusp of a life-altering situation, crisis in relationships and the use of comedy as an instrument to smile away at life’s difficulties — fuse into one, single meditative moment. And just how much time his characters (Sideways, About Schmidt and this) spend travelling, talking, and being on the road, reminding you that life is not a permanent vacation but an impermanent one.

In the hands of Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt), the film excels in laying out the different emotions going through Matt’s mind. Clooney is almost comical in how he dashes about literally, in flip-flops and shorts, his face telling the story of a man whose world has split wide open, and in his amateurish attempts to spy on Elizabeth’s lover.Director Payne’s camera seldom leaves Matt as he battles with anger, frustration, guilt and misery.

‘The Descendants’ is a simple film. But there is brilliance to be found in simplicity. This movie is the perfect example.Although it involved serious urban issues, a serious boating accident that changed a family forever, but it still was not treated with drama. It was treated with realism and simplicity. With great performances and intelligent direction involved, the audience doesn’t even realize that a film is unfolding. It’s so real that’s one feels and thinks and understands along with the characters. Urban life around them unfolds – not cinema, not drama.‘The Descendants’ is an intelligently made film, it silently crusades on as it makes you feel at ease about your own lives and tells you that we are all messed up. But all will be okay. It has a happy ending. Because let’s face it, family is all we got in the end, right?
