Shakal Pe Mat Ja Movie Review

Ratings:1.5/5 Reviewer:Taran Adarsh Site:BollywoodHungama

SHAKAL PE MAT JA doesn’t have a Khan, Kumar, Roshan or Kapoor starring in it, but it attempts to tell a story that’s refreshingly different. However, it’s the screenplay that plays a complete spoilsport. What could’ve been an interesting movie turns out to be part attention-grabbing, part drab, part prolonged. First-time director Shubh shows a flair for comic moments and like I pointed out earlier, a few sequences do make you smile/laugh. But the writing is devoid of fun and far from watertight. On the whole, SHAKAL PE MAT JA is one of those whacked-out satires that sounds far funnier on paper than on screen.

Brave effort by a group of youngsters to make a film which has been co-produced by Hrishitaa Bhatt (actor) and directed by Shubh, the hero of Shakal Pe Mat Ja. There is a sincere effort by these newbies to script and create a comedy of errors centred round the issue of terrorism and the paranoia it has created all over. But seriously, can’t say how apt it is to fool around with such a sensitive topic and create parodies. Moreover, Shakal Pe mat Ja is funny, only in bits and parts and mostly remains an amateur attempt at making a comedy.A bit more training and gravitas in their approach towards the craft, then maybe there could be a film to watch out from this young group of wannabe filmmakers.

The screenplay could have done better, had the film been released in 90s. The writer has put good efforts in coming up with a fast paced story but starting the film with a dream sequence and voice over is certainly not the brightest of the ideas.Dialogues are the real face saver for the film. Witty punch lines are capable of making you laugh but the film does not have many.
The climax of the film does not make the adrenaline rush but it’s not stale either. The revelation of the undercover agent in the end is the masterstroke of the film. Overall ‘Shakal Pe Mat Ja’ is a mixture of crass comic sequences where the audience should not look for any sensible content. Watch it if you are a habitual film viewer and would not mind laughing in bits.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja rests on a very conventional storyline, which lacks lustre in the terms of a poor screenplay. The effort of making a political satire falls flat, as the filmmaker goes overboard while tackling the subject. In fact, some portions of the story have an uncanny resemblance with SRK starrer Baadshah and Ali Zafar’s Tere Bin Laden. Dialogues prove to be the saving grace of the movie but, become monotonous after a point of time, as the plot thickens. Some good performances, dialogues and experimental editing are the strong points. Loopholes in screenplay, a thin storyline and confusing direction are the weaknesses. On the whole, Shakal Pe Mat Ja doesn’t leave a mark at all and can be easily given a miss.

The basic idea of the story is decent. However, the execution fails big time. There is nothing that the director does to save Shakal Pe Mat Ja. It is too loud, a khichadi of everything that has a little bit a predictable thrill, been there seen that comedy, a nagging girlfriend, spoof of Baba Ramdev, Al Queda, Osama, and more. There is no novelty in the film but it shows a little hope in parts. The stupid fart and porn jokes become deterrent in the flow of the story. The main issue is that it takes too long to come to the point and by then the audience has lost interest. Watch Shakal Pe Mat Ja if you have nothing better to do this weekend.
