Ominously shot, but without the standard tropes of bad horror films, 404 unfolds a little too lazily for its own good. Director Prawaal Raman relies heavily on atmospherics and gives us a moody thriller for the most part, till too much dialoguebaazi undoes all the good. There is some nice understated acting too, but the film never succeeds in spooking you out completely because of its overbearing background score.I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for director Prawaal Raman’s 404. It’s tense and eerily treated; and it almost works.

404 is a suspense thriller with a twist in the end that blows your mind. Unlike those who borrow from DVDs and re-work on characters and locales, 404 is fresh, daring and most importantly, original. 404 is perhaps the first film that depicts bipolar disorder. 404 isn’t a horror film, but there are moments that send a chill down your spine. On the whole, 404 is yet another innovative story with a taut screenplay, riveting direction and applaud-worthy performances as its strong points. Original in content and radical in approach, this new-age thriller is yet another step in the right direction of content over stars. Get ready to psych your mind!

The highpoint of the film lies in the fact that it explores paranormal activity without abandoning science and rationality. And that indeed is a rare achievement. Set against the backdrop of a medical college, the film takes up the usual issues of ragging and student suicides but gives it such a tangy twist, you end up literally KOed. There are a handful of films, now and then, which do not demand you leave your brains behind. Prawaal Raman’s 404 is one of them. Prawaal Raman gives you a film that stays with you, long after curtain call.

404 isn’t a film for the feeble-minded. But it’s refreshing. And enthralling. And in all probability will keep you involved even though you may not find it entertaining. The strength of the film lies in director Prawaal Raaman’s ability to steer clear of cliches. No grotesque make-up, no shrieking banshees either. Following a linear structure, the narrative stays focused right through. The film is a must watch for all ‘thriller’ fans. And also horror buffs! Don’t miss it.

Director Prawaal Raman comes up with an engaging plot for 404, which is complimented by a compelling story-telling. You are involved in the film and are constantly trying to decipher what will happen next. The astute twists in the climax are riveting and take you completely off-guard. While the first half is taut, the second is a bit stretched and could have done away with a few redundant scenes. 404 is a mind-boggling psychological thriller with commendable performances. Don’t miss it.

In one word, stunning! That’s the impact of Prawaal Raman’s supernatural thriller. No creaking doors, no dolby-driven demoniacal sound effects, no half-naked girls running around with banshee shrieks and provocative protests, none of the trappings of the horror genre. And yet “404” is one of the most terrifying movie experiences in recent times. Irrespective of whether you’re a fan of the supernatural-horror genre or not, don’t miss 404

A profound story and interesting concept stimulate the mind, only to see the experience marred by the presentation, which is poor. The screenplay looks like the work of a confused mind: bipolar disorder, ill-effects of ragging, the power of the mind, the eternal do-ghosts-exist debate, all are explored in conjunction with one another. You can’t decide which one is more prominent. Go for 404 with a bottle of patience. It runs for so long that you could start hallucinating whether the movie is real.
