This film is ultimately a difficult watch because it just retreads many of the old jokes, and compensates for a lack of novelty by upgrading location and gimmicks. It’s a big plodding bore for anyone seeking original, engaging entertainment. I’m going with one out of five for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian – if you’re smarter than a fifth-grader, you deserve better than this!

Part 1 was funny and original. Part 2 is still funny without being original and has a much larger canvas of characters that come tumbling out of history, once the lights are turned off at the Museum. But the real chutzpah lies with the new recruit in the war of good against evil: adorable Amelia Earhart, the feisty woman who flew the plane across the Pacific. This time, she flies the Wright Brother’s stringy machine in another do-or-die mission for the man she’s smitten with: Daley of course. This one’s silly, yet funny with a roll call of rib-tickling characters pulled out from moth-balled history.

We’ve all seen better special effects and heard funnier jokes before. Actually there is precious little that is even smile-worthy in this movie. The performances range from the hammy (Azaria) to the perky (Adams) to so-wooden-you-could-play-cricket-with-it (Stiller). The leading man manages to force his features into a smile maybe once in this whole enterprise and for the rest of this movie he just holds that expression of neutral befuddlement that used to be amusing, once.
