It’s a testament to the star power of Salman Khan that Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is never unwatchable despite its old-fashioned story, its frankly laughable scenarios  and its failure to flesh out characters adequately. The film revisits many of Barjatya’s favorite themes – the importance of family, the enduring bond of brotherhood, and the power of forgiveness – but it has nothing particularly new to say that might justify making this film in 2015. I’m going with two-and-a-half stars plus an additional half star for Salman Khan, which makes it three out of five for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Get ready for a sugar rush.

On the whole, PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO is the perfect Diwali entertainer for the entire family. The film will win abundant love [prem], while its investors will reap a harvest [dhan], making it a memorable Diwali for all concerned. This one's a record-smasher -- scoring from East to West and from North to South, scoring at plexes as well as single screens, scoring at metros as well as non-metros, scoring in the domestic market as well as in the international arena. B-L-O-C-K-B-U-S-T-E-R!

On the whole, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will be loved by one section of the audience and will not find favour with youngsters initially, but it will, in the final tally, emerge as a comfortable box-office winner for all concerned. It will do huge business at the ticket windows. Despite its high cost, profits are assured. In fact, the film may go on to earn very well if the ladies audience patronises it in a big way – which is a very big possibility.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is Salman Khan's triumph. Salman simply blows the top off the theatres with a double role that makes you laugh, gasp, sigh - and cry.Ghee-soaked in goodness, PRDP is gift-wrapped with a simple line. With family, stand strong - but also bow. Because nothing hurts like your own blood - and nothing heals like it too..

In ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo’ nothing belongs, nothing is a fit. And Ms Sonam Kapoor is lissome and quite lovely, but her slim derriere is no match for Ms Madhuri Dixit’s saucy, jutting butt in ‘HAHK’: nope, nothing in ‘PRDP’ for us, in the India of 2015.

A lot of visible effort has gone in designing Prem Ratan Dhan Payo's opulence and scale but ultimately it is just lacklustre, recycled fare from a man stuck on men versus women sporting contests, midnight kitchen rendezvous and the pristine aura of Prem. The last one still holds good. Rest is just rah-rah.

Unlike his earlier films, Sooraj hasn’t been able to do complete justice to his secondary characters. It’s because of the mediocre score that the film begins to feel lengthy. Maybe knocking off a few songs and a few minutes would’ve made the difference. PRDP is a must-watch for all Salman fans and will be best enjoyed with your family. Because no family film gets bigger than this one!

Had the duo of do-gooders taken less time in achieving their end and had Salman Khan been a given a more naturally gifted female co-star than Sonam, PRDP might have been an infinitely better film despite the vapidity of the script. The overwrought PRDP might not be that bad, but it is syrupy to the point of being unendurable. Only for Salman Khan fans.

If you want to relive the HAHK times, this could be your pick. There is everything you will find in a Rajshri film and hence it will appeal to you only if you are a fan of their films which are all about values, traditions and love for one’s family Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is not everyone’s cup of tea! It is a family watch and best for those who love to watch happy endings with emotional undertones. This is a typical Rajshri affair so watch it only if you can digest it. I am going with a 3/5 for the film.

Blood is thicker than water. That's what Sooraj Barjatya films are mostly about. Family ties, the stresses and tensions that every family needs to go through and the likes. If you've watched this director's films in the past, you'd get the drift. If not, there's always Salman Khan to fall back on.In all, the film works for both Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya's specific audience bases. While a Salman fan might miss his super-human antic at times, he does a great job otherwise. Watch the film for Salman.

The director has tried his best to keep the ethics of Indian culture right at the centre of his screenplay. The movie is a sureshot family entertainer, without any uncomfortable scenes. However, it does take a while to digest that such a perfect family and ethics can co-exist in today's time.

Through PRDP, Sooraj Barjatya has once again laid emphasis on family values and spreading love. There is romance, drama coupled with some action sequences towards the end make this movie a wholesome entertainer. All in all, PRDP is a perfect treat for the families this festive season.

  7. PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO:
    Once upon a time….zzzZZZ! [1.5/5]

Enough said about films that still fall [in literal sense] for 80’s/90’s standard set of emotions to put the cash-registers ringing at the box-office! No, they aren’t nostalgic anymore. Do not hide your sorry state of creative drought behind the curtains of so-called ‘classic age-old charm’! Sooraj R. Barjatya needs to get up from his dining table which serves a daily dose of ‘Sanskar’ more than the reality.

Rajshri Productions Pvt Ltd’s PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO is the most confused film I have come across in my life. It neither bores you with its trademark spell of ‘gyaan’ on true Indian values in a ‘softer than melting cheese’ tone nor does tickle you with the all well-bred, polite and ‘cultured’ idea of romance.

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO comes from the house of traditions where a copy of Ramayana should constantly be there on your study table, no matter how old or young you are. Though the plot takes its cues from THE PRISONER OF ZENDA- an 1894 novel by Anthony Hope and Mark Twain’s THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, you can easily find the inspirations and the aspirations straight from the Ramayana. The king of ‘Whatever-pur’ [Sameer Dharmadhikari] had 3 wives like King Dashrath had. Two of the wives being legal and one being often called as ‘mashooka’ of the king, there sure is plenty scope of step-brothers and step-sisters to deal with.

So, the elder son Vijay [Salman Khan] has Ajay [Neil Nitin Mukesh], Chandrika [Swara Bhaskar], Radhika [Aashika Bhatia] as his step-siblings and all the setbacks a family of such nature could have. Just a couple of days before his coronation; the prince meets a schemed fatal accident and now, the trustworthy associates [Anupam Kher and gang] have no other choices left but to replace him with his look-alike Prem [Salman, again] to save the situation. Sonam Kapoor plays Maithili- the princess engaged to the real prince but is now reinventing love in the fake one.

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO is a shoddily directed film where the scale is intentionally big but the soul in the content hardly makes an appearance. Film opens in Ayodhya (a dream location for Rajshri] where Prem is seen switching his accent carelessly and shamelessly from Awadhi to Rajasthani. The battleground for the plot supposedly finds its root in a location 50 Kms away from Ayodhya but can clearly be judged as some rocky royal place in Rajasthan. Aren’t Google maps free to double-check? It’s not that Sooraj doesn’t show any evolution in his mind. There is a constant joke on Anupam Kher being a virgin and I think that’s an achievement for a Rajshri film. So what if in the same film, the cleavage showing girl has to be the wicked one or vice-a-versa and the short-skirts can only be worn behind the closed doors. In a scene; when asked by a reporter if the coronation is not an out-dated procedure in today’s times, the prince intimidates him with, “do you think traditions are funny?” I wish I could answer on his behalf, “No sire, they aren’t funny but looking at what you [Mr. Barjatya] suggest, they are definitely too plain, painful, pale and pointless to be on screen”.

On the performances, I would not dare rate Mr Salman Khan. Though he’s completely comfortable and contented in his zone, his fans would certainly miss a lot of his ‘I don’t give a damn’ mannerism and slapstick action. Sonam Kapoor tries hard, as usual. Arman Kohli as one of the conspirators looks all bulky, grisly and ‘suit’able to the part but acts no better than Neil Nitin Mukesh. Deepak Dobriyal impresses in a scene or two. Swara is so typecast you would hardly notice if she’s from the sets of RAANJHNAA. And what was Sanjai Mishra doing here?

At the end, I don’t see why and how this PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO will entertain families in today’s times especially when there is no ‘Sanskar’ to look up to, no ‘Prem’ to feel shivers of emotion and no cinema [apart from the grand sets and the heavily aspirational designer clothing] to at least calm your senses. ‘Raja-rani ki kahani’ still works to put you to sleep! [1.5/5]

  14. A rajshree family movie where u can count only 2 brothers & 2 sisters as salman's royal family and as sonam's royal family only a dadi visible only in 2 scene defines how sadly n badly this movie is scripted. Apart from them all other relatives r supposedly dead n all other characters are either single or virgin. Storyline is too terrible to even think about it again gives u headache as u dnt understand if armaan n neil almost killed salman in start then y would de keep them captured alive through out the movie n fukkk it up at the end so stupiditly. Dnt think sonam was not surprised to no the truth in the scene towards the end.. She did her best to express but to audience her shocked expression comes at blank face n shy expressions come as if she is feeling orgasmic.. She is no match to madhuri dixit or even bhagyashree to b frank. Salman is somehow acted better than his typical bhaijaan characters. All screen space is given to salman n sonam to all other actors r just props and have been wasted. Dialogues r too cheesy n sugary with and sometimes u r forced to give poker face expressions not knowing how to react to such cheesy 90's dialogues n scenes. Overall PRDP is another overhyped movie which everyone including me will watch like zombies making it cross 300 crores.. Just watch it on weekdays to save a little money for a refreshing coffee after a brain freeze. I give it 1.5 out of 5

~@~ Movie Review : No Spoilers Guaranteed ~@~

Plot of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) is more predictable than India Vs Bangladesh cricket match. As you would have guessed, it is a shudh shakahaari parivarik film without any onions and garlic. Barjatyas are trapped in a black hole and refuse to budge beyond 1990s. PRDP will remind all those in 30+/40+ about their jawaani and to teens/20+ audience about their nana naani.
Paarivarik film genre is a citadel of Barjatyas. They have a secret masala recipe with pre-mixed ingredients, which has been dishing out Blockbusters ever since Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). Zero points for any direction and creativity as PRDP offers nothing new.

PRDP is 95% about Salman Khan and 5% everyone else put together. Some of the critically acclaimed actors like Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal and Swara Bhaskar were totally wasted in this film. Sonam Kapoor played the perfect mannequin as director would have expected. Anupam Kher, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Armaan Kohli disappoints.

With all its lows, this film has a very strong point which is the charm of Salman Khan's Prem character. Something which made him heartthrob of nation and made all the girls swoon. Even if it is a cliched character, still it has that perfect blend of idealism-romance-humor-impishness with a feel good factor. Ever since Salman Khan metamorphosed into Chulbul Pandey, it left a void in Bollywood for Prem's character. I personally find Salman more emphatic, emotionally expressive and appealing in Prem than any other role.

Full marks to PRDP for its sets, costumes and cinematography. At one point, it feels like an advertisement of Taj Lake Palace (Udaipur) honeymoon suite package. My heartfelt sympathies with fellow salaried comrades who got a heartburn watching those scenes. Its OK, afterall Mount Abu, Mahabaleshwar and Yercaud aren't that bad honeymoon destinations either. Sulk Sulk..
Music of the film is pukeworthy and having Himeshji Reshamiyaji on the vocals was the last straw. Song "Aaj Unse Milna Hai" was promoted by Haldirams and the lyrics have summed up their entire menu. Title track Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has special DTS-Dolby echo effects of Kekta Kapoor.. It goes like this...Payo... Payo...Laayo... Chaayo....Aayo... Gaayo..Payo. WhyOOOO ?

Verdict: If you are a die hard fan of Prem Avatar then its a must watch. Else you can skip it.

Ratings: 3/5 (For charm of Prem, Sets costumes and cinematography)

  41. Mr.Rai, You must be a tired person after giving such a long review. I m not sure about PRDP but your so called review was so lengthy, unappealing, unimpressive and boring that I started feeling sleepy at times.
In regards to your kind thoughts, all I can say that you have no sense of writing reviews especially when you don't even know what the movie is all about. I know you are young and belong to a generation where social and family values are called 'Crap' and following western culture is the need of time but you should not give your pathetic comments for something you don't know about. You should go and watcth weirdest of movies like Hate Story 2,3, Pyar Ka Panchnama, Bhag Johny etc. Etc... where you don't even have to use your mind to think that much. Good Luck!
