Of course, this franchise is based on a popular line of Hasbro toys. And Michael Bay’s style of filmmaking is nicknamed Bayhem. And you are not here for nuanced story-telling. But The Last Knight can’t even pass even the lowest bar for entertainment. It’s visually complex but aesthetically ugly. It’s heart-breaking that so much money and so much work has produced such minimal shock and awe. Bay and Wahlberg have both said that they aren’t coming back. That’s the one silver lining in this dark and incomprehensible cloud.

The Transformers eventually rebelled against their cruel slave masters and threw them off the planet.I do hope the connection between Quintessa, who is the main villain, Optimus Prime and the Unicorn is explored in the next installment keeping -- unlike they did this time around -- the viewers in mind.

Director Michael Bay breaches the limits of farfetchedness with this entrant in the Transformers franchise. And that odd Harriet Tubman anecdote is the least ridiculous thing in its mythology. By now, the world has accepted the Transformers movies to be unabashedly mindless, full of VFX explosions, goofy bro-humour and stereotypical female characters. In that sense, this movie delivers. It is 154 minutes of sensory overload. But otherwise, it’s the movie-equivalent of the string of 10,000 non-stop firecrackers that annoying kids burst outside your window in Diwali.

As you have guessed, this is the exact same formula from the previous films, but to mix things up this time, Optimus Prime lands on his home planet to seek his origins. Nothing in that segment of the plot, however, makes any difference and the film proceeds to be precisely as long, droning, loud and inconsequential as you expect it to be. You get robots fighting robots, robots fighting humans, humans fighting humans, but as awesome as that sounds on paper it’s still a gloomy and tiresome slog to the finale that only promises more of the same for years to come.

Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth in this series of films in which giant robots decapitate, sever, and butcher each other in the most violent manner, will be the acid test for fans. It will either be the moment when you slip into full-blown denial, willingly ignoring everything that is wrong with these movies (and with yourself), or, it will be the moment you finally snap out of it (as I have).

Transformers is the kind of film that divides the audience squarely into two camps: there are those who will watch it regardless of what the reviews say, and the rest who’ve maintained a passing interest since the first released in 2007. The Last Knight is definitely better than most of its predecessors (which is good news for the former group), but it’s still tedious and bloated enough to warrant skipping entirely for the those who are a part of the latter.

The real adventure begins in the second half, the first half just serves as the starter for the main course. It’s absolutely okay if you miss the first half entirely and start watching the film from the second half. However, the action scenes in the end too seem to be unnecessary stretched and you actually wait for them to get over. In one word the film is boring. The film fails to impress. The action scenes at the end are a yawn fest. It’s high time the transformers forget about Unicron and spare us from watching them in action. Not more than one star for this.
