Shamitabh  Hindi Movie Review

The first half hour of "Shamitabh" works as an affectionate postcard to the movies as Balki communicates our hero's unending fascination for films through striking sequences. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for "Shamitabh". Brimming with smart ideas and powered by the performances of its two principals, it's a shame this promising film comes undone by the Curse of the Second Half. Watch it though for bravely treading new ground.

first half of Shamitabh is basically Nagesh Kukunoor’s Iqbal with a lot less heart and a lot more indulgence. It’s tiresome, poorly shot, suffering from an atrociously patchy sound-design and inconsistent dubbing. Following intermission, it careens off the rails so catastrophically it feels an uncredited Bhandarkar/Bhansali lent the writing team a hand.

On the whole, Shamitabh is good at the concept level but that’s about all. With a screenplay full of holes and lack of entertainment for the large mass base of audience, it will fail at the ticket windows. Although business in premium multiplexes in a few big cities will be okay, it will be grossly insufficient to cover the heavy investment in the film. Collections in most single-screen cinemas and small centres will be very poor.

R. Balki has opted for diverse themes in the past. Shamitabh too travels a path rarely travelled. Several poignant moments stay with you. Amitabh Bachchan is UNPARALLELED yet again, essaying a demanding character remarkably. Truly, a powerhouse performance. Dhanush stands up to the icon and that's a humungous achievement. His range as a terrific actor is too evident. Shamitabh caters largely to an urban audience. A crisper version would've only enhanced the overall impact.

The film spends much time critiquing the ways of Bollywood, but ends up repeating many of the very follies it takes a dig at. Shamitabh is watchable on account of the great performances.  Shamitabh is recommended only for its storyline, the quality of the performances and its technical brilliance. Shamitabh might have benefitted had Balki gone a little easier on his obsession with the ageless superstar.

In over-explaining this uncommon story - "Very deep", as Amitabh drawls - the plot rushes through emotional moments. And amidst the high-wattage attention around the Dhanush-Amitabh pairing, less is paid to Akshara, whose performance, although sincere, sometimes looks a tad banal. As does the film occasionally, a pity because Shamitabh's striking story could leave you speechless.

the premise of ‘Shamitabh’ is fabulous on many levels. Because of the cross-connections it makes with real life and reel life.. There are a few moments which sparkle, and we laugh in acknowledgement. But the rest of it is overpowered by unabashed reverence

Trust filmmaker R Balki (of Cheeni Kum and Paa fame) to attempt something different each time he is behind the camera. Shamitabh comes from his wild imagination; it's a story made out of Bachchan's popular voice and Dhanush's unconventional looks, both clubbed together in Shamitabh. What works very well is the flow of the story.

Even though Balki has tried his level best to define every moment of the film, the viewers may find something amiss (esp. in the second half). The characters in the film are very relatable and very real, however, the film's weak storyline falters the film. On the whole, SHAMITABH has an out-of-the-box and unusual plot that will appeal only to a niche audience. Go for it only if you are a hardcore Bachchan fan.

Shamitabh is definitely a one-time watch for its efforts to stand out in the industry that thrives on remakes and haphazard biopics. The film is a treat for all Amitabh Bachchan as well as Dhanush fans since the film in its true sense is a mixture of their solid excellence. I would say watch Shamitabh for the idea that it is built on and of course for the flawless performances.

While the performances is what makes Shamitabh engaging, there are moments in the film that seem to drag and drive home the ego-clashes again and again. It gets tiring and the climax gets unnecessary convoluted. At some point, the focus of the film becomes a commentary on the state of Bollywood films and how mediocrity thrives there. While Shamitabh may not be gripping from start to finish, it’s a treat to watch its lead actors. They make it work even if it’s not heavy on plot.

  1. people are talking about shamitabh on

The rise and fall and rise of a flawed film!

From the two potent & powerful characters written scrupulously for screen to plenty of interesting ‘Bollywood’ references from real life, there’s a lot to feed your ‘filmy’ appetite in R Balki’s smartly conceived SHAMITABH. Had it also been crispier, less messy & a little modest in its melodramatic approach, it would have been much more than just a worthy mention in the list of movies made in Bollywood, on Bollywood! As of now, let’s just settle the score with ‘a good one-time watch’.

Balki is known to push the envelopes in terms of adopting uncommon ideas for the screen. In SHAMITABH, it is all about two different talents coming together for each other’s good but with their own share of egos and apprehensions making it a difficult ride to step on. A small-town mute with average looks, Danish [Dhanush] is your ‘not-so everyday’ cinema-crazy. As illustrated in the film, he even turns at ‘48 frames per second’ speed [camera technique used for a slow-motion effect]! On the other hand, it is Amitabh Sinha [the legend himself] – a long-struggling actor with rich baritone whose shattered dreams and destructive self-esteem have landed him in a deserted graveyard. Science & technology gives both a golden chance to lend each other a hand in satisfying their urge to become widely accepted & admired. But the question ruins the smooth walk, “Who’s better? Who’s bigger? The voice or the face?”!

SHAMITABH interestingly takes references from real life and weaves it with the screenplay to make it more intriguing. Danush playing a bus-conductor who makes it to the heights of being a superstar can easily be allied with his real life father-in-law and the megastar Rajnikanth’s inspiring life story. Likewise, Amitabh plays his namesake who doesn’t forget to mention that he once was rejected from everywhere for his very same tonal quality Danish needs and approves of.

Balki also doesn’t leave any stone unturned to make viewers spellbound with the elements of surprise at a consistent interval. In a scene, the ever-gorgeous Rekha gives away the best actor trophy to Dhanush and when Dhanush starts thanking everyone from the stage, of course in Amitabh Bachchan’s ever-mesmeric voice; Rekha’s perplexedly stunned expression could tell you all those said-unsaid romantic notions between the two without saying much. One of the most intelligently envisioned and executed cameos I would say!

Dhanush though looks a bit shaky and blatantly too confident for the role of an earnest aspirant. His mute act also works more on the entertaining side and not equally absorbing in showcasing emotional outrage within the character. And who doesn’t remember and rejoice Amitabh Bachchan’s drunken acts from his previous superhits?? You will find the legend here practicing more and more of such acts with the same amount of excellence and exactness. Akshara Haasan impresses as a confident go-getter girl who can give it back to you, no matter how big star you play on screen. She calls a spade a spade, Danush a ‘monkey’ for that matter and she means it. More power to women in Hindi cinema!

SHAMITABH despite being entertaining in parts, having blessed with applause-worthy performances by the leads and a completely fresh & novel plot, puts your interest off after a while. Bachchan’s monologues gets into repetitive mode and some are really superfluous. A slack chopping hand on editing table ends up lengthening the duration of the film anywhere close to 2 hours 40 minutes. Even the melodramatic climax looks strained enough to recreate the one from Kamal Haasan starrer SADMA. At the end, SHAMITABH has Amitabh written all over, and this one name guarantees and deserves a good one-time watch at any given time! [3/5]

  5. SHAMITABH : Focuses only on 'SH' & ignores 'AMITABH' completely (2/5)
Many times we see that a film has a very good concept. And we often tend to believe that this is enough. But is that really enough ? Many times because of loose character development , ignoring some basic questions , & weak focus ; even the the good concepts go in vain. 'Shamitabh' is perfect example for that.
Danish (Dhanush) is a mute boy from childhood but has a immense passion for Cinema & wants to become Hero. When he comes to Mumbai one A.D. woman (Akshara) helps him & takes him to research center where he can speak if somebody speaks from the background & Danish can move his lips accordingly .And both finds a suitable voice for him in failed struggler Amitabh (AB). He agrees & then Danish becomes a star. And then ego comes into power.
Now they call it ego clashes. But if you can really see through , you will say Amitabh's point is right. In becoming star , Danish uses Amitabh's voice & his voice have great contribution in Danish's success. Still you can clearly see Danish gets all fame & Amitabh is treated & amused as his servant. Isn't it natural for Amitabh to feel pain ? Does even Danish have the point in getting angry over Amitabh ? In almost every scene he is showed as selfish man , who only thinks about his success.
There are so much questions unanswered in the film. But I can't discuss as it will kill the curiosity of the film. But I can tell you one thing , in pre - climax , when it is a clash between Shamitabh , you will support Amitabh over Danish which is the biggest flaw. How this important point ignored by the director ? Plus Amitabh's voice don't suit to Dhanush's personality much .
On acting part Big B is excellent as usual . Watch for his facial expressions. Dhanuh is Ok. His character is very loosely written & developed . Akshara have very small role , which she does .
Direction is not upto the mark. As I already said there are many points ignored by the director. ANd he focuses on too many points at one time like handicap development , selfishness , ego clashes etc. Editing leaves much to be desired.
Watch it for Big B's performance , if you really have to ! (2/5)

  6. Shamitabh is technically brilliant, novel, out of the box ode to cinema by R.Balki which is taken a few notches higher by the acting prowess of two giant of actors namely Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush. Shamitabh is definitely a good one time watch for its really novel concept which is an ode to cinema plus the towering performances of (DHANU)SH-AMITABH. 7. A Potpourri of Vestiges Review

‎Shamitabh‬ (2015): R. Balki's satire on the Hindi Film industry aka "Bollywood"

Shamitabh is part entertaining and part thought-provoking but it has its share of flaws and inconsistencies.

But, if you truly love cinema or are a diehard fan of Amitabh Bachchan, then Shamitabh is not a film that you can afford to miss!

  9. With films like ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘Paa’ to his credit, R. Balki has made a name for himself in Bollywood. Actor Amitabh Bachchan has been his all-time favorite, playing a lead in almost all of his films. In fact, ‘Paa’ earned a national award for the actor. R. Balki, this weekend, brings a duo of Amitabh and Dhanush, who made a strong debut in ‘Raanjhana’.

‘Shamitabh’ narrates the story of a mute boy Danish (Dhanush) who aspires to become a mainstream Bollywood actor someday. Danish can act well but the problem is that he can’t speak. Danish heads to Mumbai where he meets Akshara (Akshara Haasan), an assistant director who identifies a spark in him. Both of them start looking for a voice which would suit Danish’s personality. Their search ends to Amitabh (Amitabh Bachchan), a drunkard, who agrees to lend his voice to Danish through a latest technology. And that is when the actual ego clashes between the two begin.

    R. Balki has tried his best to offer something new out his kitchen, truly a tribute to the legend Amitabh Bachchan’s voice. Shamitabh, in the end, only remains to be a story of ego clashes between the two leads. A weak storyline and an extended second half are the most disappointing things about R Balki’s Shamitabh.

The performances, though, are first rate. Amitabh Bachchan, yet again, is spell bounding. Dhanush is impressive too. He makes his presence felt. Debutant Akshara Hasaan is decent.

Shamitabh clearly falls in the department of its storyline. Amitabh Bachchan is a treat to watch though.

    Rating- 2.5/5

  10. Such a waste of talent here in this movie.Movie was going well till the interval but after that so stupid moves in the story. R Balki is really half-baked storyteller shown by this movie. So disappointing climax it has. Hairstyle of Akshara Hasan was really bad otherwise she is really most beautiful upcoming star. PATHETIC REALLY.

  13. Shamitabh is a nice attempt by R balki. The story is about Dhanush who, since childhood dreams nothing but to become a good actor but what obstructs him is his dumbness..After coming to Mumbai his intense desire for acting was noticed by an Assistant Director,Akshara who wanted to bring his superb acting skills infront of everyone..Acting Performance and dialogues are the two main usp s of this film..Dhanush acted quite nicely,Amitabh Bacchan was outstanding,Akshara was ok..Dialogues were really good and the way those are presented were also nice..Music in this movie is quite average though the background score is ok.The climax of the movie really appreciable especially the last scene...The things tht went wrong is tht the excessively dragged, comedy scenes were also not tht much attracted except a few...The direction was good but it could have been much much better..Overall the film is a decent one..Go only if u r a fan of BIG B....My Rating 2.5/5
