The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Review

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: Masand's Verdict ( CNN IBN)
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty doesn’t have the lightness of touch you associate with a whimsical Wes Anderson picture. It does have a few cheeky moments  but not enough to make it a genuinely enjoyable watch. In the end it comes off as an indulgent vanity project for a misguided star who thinks two hours of his adventure-holiday videos would make for charming cinema viewing. I’m going with two out of five for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I’d rather watch Zoolander or Tropic Thunder again on DVD; Ben Stiller’s so much more fun when he isn’t taking himself too seriously.

When photojournalist Sean O'Connell (Penn) sends him a roll of film one day, it has one missing negative. Walter tries to track down O'Connell and locate the negative. As Walter travels, he slowly metamorphoses from the socially awkward gimp into the man he's always dreamed of becoming. Penn gives O'Donnell the right amount of enigmatic, distant charm. Walter's mom Edna (MacLaine) has a brief but impactful presence. Although Stiller has acted in far-out films like Zoolander before, this one gives viewers another side to this actor - one who can handle such ambitious films with ease.

Beautifully shot and easy on the eyes, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is thoroughly engaging. Never before have I seen a room full of some of the sternest critics in town refusing to leave their seats, expecting more as the titles begin to roll in. Although you do end up guessing the twists in the tale, it doesn't disappoint. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is not about calculating Walter's next step, its about sharing a mesmerising, unexpected journey. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the triumph of the human spirit over human existence.

The movie is a visual treat. You get immersed in the sublime beauty all through the film. Walter’s life is shown with changing color tones. With a wonderful soundtrack, you get to be a part of this amazing journey. Ben Stiller does a fantastic job directing as well as acting. Now for the bad news. As the movie goes from one visual spectacle to another, there isn’t anything that leaps out. However, the audience will get the feeling that the ending leaves something to be desired. Overall the film is a visual adventure about life.

  1. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY: Celebrate a daydreamer’s expedition to Life, Love & Nature! [3.5/5]

We all, at some point of time, might have thought & dreamt of entering another zone in life where we can perform, do or act as a human being much better than we are in real. Who hasn't think of punching hard on Boss’s face while he’s busy establishing you as the garbage of the company? Who hasn't fall into imagining an all suitable settings where you are ever ready to impress the girl around with those hidden talents inside you?

Daydreaming is not a mental disorder or something but when it hits Walter Mitty- a regular mind-numbing guy in his mid-40s, it definitely goes overboard to create momentary but extra-large viewing pleasure. And till the time you go gaga over these dreamy visual delights, something else comes in to surprise you…and that is called LIFE!

Ben Stiller’s directorial drama ‘THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY’ is a feel good film that talks about the mysterious nature & inspiring lessons of life in a very fascinating way. Walter Mitty works for the ‘LIFE’ magazine in a quite prominent role but remains unnoticed to the most of his co-workers including the girl he has hots for. Like everyone else, he too wants to impress everyone with his wit, his creative expertise and the super-human act to save people but his desires get life only when he’s zoned out. Life for him takes u-turn when a photojournalist [Sean Penn] known to him for almost 16 years sends him photo-negatives for the cover of latest issue but the particular negative actually never reaches to Walter. Now, Walter must inquire and locate the photojournalist to get what everyone is looking for. Thus starts the enriching- enlightening journey of life with Walter’s never done-never seen before contact with nature and its magical events.

‘THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY’ is a beautiful film with picturesque cinematography and scenic visuals that stays in your heart for very long. It also succeeds in striking the emotional chord whether it is the appalling situation of Walter seeking everyone’s attention or the sense of accomplishment that comes in his expedition midway. Special mention to the innovative usages of texts/supers throughout the film!

Ben Stiller steals the show both ways, with his confident directional skills and also the absolutely unbelievable transformation in his far-from-regular role of a lifetime. He looks every part of such miserable character that merely has anything to mention in his profile on a social networking site, in the column of ‘have been there-done that’. He makes the much needed connect with viewers. Kirsten Wiig brings vibrancy on screen through her lovely presence. Sean Penn is in a cameo here but plays a very significant role with absolute brilliance.

Overall, it is a film that presents Ben Stiller in an utterly different league. A film that celebrates life in the very same manner Oscar winner ‘LIFE OF PI’ has done in the past. Not that adventurous, not that overpowering but definitely an important film that keeps a constant smile on your face with moist eyes. Extremely Likeable! [3.5/5]

  2. Verdict - “A visual spectacle which was inspiring and conventional”

So in the course of the movie, I felt really correlated with Ben Stiller's character (Walter Mitty). Yes! ofcourse I'm a daydreamer and I don't really think that is too awkward to dream about an assortment of things that we really desire to do in our life. My concern is that Walter's character was sported in a little stupid-ish way, like it's really not that disparate to day dream.

Walter Mitty is a daydreamer, he's shy and introverted, like he's really not that chatty talkative guy and few take advantage of his dissimilar behaviour. Functioning on a work package, Walter finds the cover photo missing in a delivery sent by Sean O'Connell (Sean Penn) who is a very popular and a well known photographer. Being the last issue of the magazine he's working for, Walter was pressured to get the work done on given time.

Accordingly he makes a decision to go find Sean who is a wanderer and an anonymous guy to many. Basing on the clues that Sean left in his photographs, Walter decides to go on a real life adventure and that's where our story commences.

Honestly, I like movies when they show up with a central message about life and Walter Mitty exactly does that which was trouble-free and uncomplicated. Everything was narrated in a very distinct way which bequeaths you with all the audacity to go achieve something in your life which leaves in some kinda appalling result which eventually tuns into an everlasting memory.

Cinematography is the most vital thing when things encircle around inventiveness and existence. Remarkably, the camera work was magnificent in the movie. There is nothing exhibited with terrific CGI, but the outlook of many scenic places were beautifully captured with perfect frame rate and good usage of light.

Ben Stiller's performance as a reticent quiet guy was decent and he presented his character in a unique way as it's pretty much close to heart. His direction was mislaid at times, as it was his dream project he delivered in his style by adding few commercial things which didn't really work.

The movie definitely suffered with few major plot holes, the screenplay was not consistent, even in a heartfelt moment it tried to be something cheesy and that really spoiled the whole intent at times.

I understand that it's trying to be an entertaining Christmas movie, but if you're trying to convey a message it has to be serious and spot-on when it needs to be. Few other things can be debatable, but those are the minor things which are excusable.

Nevertheless, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an inspiring, thoughtful and a profound narrative which expresses a beautiful message to go achieve something with your life.
It was visually amazing but suffered with major plot holes which may bug your attention. A solid family movie which is absolutely worth a watch if you're a fan of the genre.

    My Rating - 3/5
