Himmatwala  Movie Review

Ratings:1/5  Review By:  Rajeev Masand  Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)
It must take a special kind of skill to remake a mediocre film like 1983’s Himmatwala without even marginally improving on it. Director Sajid Khan’s potpourri of excessive melodrama, puerile humor, cartoonish action, and garish songs plods on for two-and-a-half hours with little concern for your bladder or your mental health. The all-new Himmatwala has many of the same problems that plagued the earlier film, and a few new ones of its own. Chief among these is its inability to decide what it wants to be – an honest remake, evocative of the tone and spirit of those 80s ‘Madras potboilers’, or a tongue-in-cheek spoof of that very genre.I’m going with one out of five for director Sajid Khan’s Himmatwala.

HIMMATWALA takes you back to the familiar terrain. It's the typical good versus bad saga loaded with every possible ingredient that makes masala films tick. Sajid ensures that those who have watched the earlier HIMMATWALA -- or those who haven't watched it -- get paisa vasool entertainment in those 2.30 hours, but, unfortunately, what unfolds on screen is so routine and monotonous that you fervently hope for some novelty in this adaptation. On the whole, HIMMATWALA fails as a film. The only silver lining is the presence of A-list stars and of course, the hype surrounding the film, which might attract footfalls in mass-friendly circuits initially. But as a film that promises big entertainment, HIMMATWALA is hugely disappointing!

There is no polite way to say this. Himmatwala is an excruciating experience. It begins with a close-up of a disco ball and it’s all downhill from there. I have very little memory of the original Himmatwala but this remake is so painful that I longed for Sridevi, Jeetendra and his trademark white shoes. More than anything, Himmatwala reminds us of why the 1980s are considered the worst decade in Hindi cinema. It’s loud, puerile and so unfunny that it hurts. When Himmatwala ended, I felt like I had aged a few years. Honestly, you need real courage to brave this one. I’m going with one star.

In this remake, Sajid Khan's passion for the 80s kitsch is entertaining to begin with, but gets suffocating after a point. While few scenes (grand and outlandish) win ceetees, the rest try too hard to get any reaction. He also attempts 'Nazi'jokes, gay-gags and revisits Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho'(we braved this too!). This one might impress the wannabe Himmatwalas out there. But it'll take more than himmat to go back to the gawdiest era of all. Rest, as they say, is history. Repeated!

Sarcasm aside, retro is fun but only when offered with levity, chutzpah and an ironic of parody and reverence. The new Himmatwala displays this quality but only in spurts and superficially. Sajid Khan loves big scale but the production values of all his films, their aesthetics, g are consistently tacky. Himmatwala is no different. In one of the films’ hilariously tragic scenes, a character says, ‘Teri maa, meri maa. Teri bahen, meri bahen.’ But even though I sincerely tried Sajid, teri audience cannot be meri audience.’

f you, in the manner of the director, accept that unalloyed bunkum can be legitimately passed off, and gleefully lapped up, as cinematic entertainment, you might even come away pleased as punch with Himmatwala. The film lacks punch, but it loses no opportunity to pun on the word and the act. One would have described the film as pea-brained and left it at that if only if it had a semblance of a brain. Himmatwala is a mindless potpourri that brings together the worst ingredients of 1980s Hindi cinema and parlays them into a messy mélange that quivers repeatedly under its own weight. To each his own. But you don’t really have to subject yourself to this monstrous assault on the senses, even if you are blessed with loads of himmat.

Director Sajid Khan has tried to recreate the era of the eighties but has overlooked the fact that the audience has moved decades ahead. His narrative style caters to just a section of the single-screen cinema audiences. On the whole, Himmatwala faces a supremely uphill task at the ticket-windows. It will do well initially at the single-screen cinemas but will not find favour with the multiplex audience. Without much support coming in from the younger generation, it will go down in box-office history as a forgettable flop.

I expected Himmatwala to be predictable, not only because I have faint memories of the older film, but because it follows such a template. I also expected it to be annoying, and it doesn't disappoint on both scores. But I didn't think it would be so dull. We smile at this line. Because it is a smart send-up of the films we used to love despite themselves. If this Himmatwala had adopted that tone and kept it flowing through the film, it would have been something to watch. Devgn manages to get it in a couple of moments, but only in a couple. In the rest, it needs all your courage. Hai himmat?

Sajid Khan’s “entertainer” ‘Himmatwala’ starring Ajay Devgn has all the ingredients of a mindless masala film. But it does jolt you at regular intervals, for sopping up a 30-year-old formula, proves fatal to your contemporary digestive system! In totality, the film is a typical masala entertainer, as director Sajid Khan would like to put it. You will certainly get entertained only if you had nursed the desire to travel back in time, especially to an era when cinema revolved around a helpless mother-daughter duo and their life-savior ‘Himmatwala’. One and half for the film and half a star more for Paresh Rawal.

What’s Good: The film is exactly as good as its 1983 version. What’s Bad: Un-hilarious stupidity and the tediously long narrative leaves you gasping. Loo break: Just stay in the loo. Don’t bother coming back!. Watch or Not?: Sajid Khan’s Himmatwala is not a remake but a bland spoof devoid of any logic. It is stupid and exhaustingly long. This one is surely a feat, the audiences aren’t supposed to swallow down seriously! Himmatwala demands excessive himmat from the audiences to sustain it through all its exasperating buffoonery laced with dim witted stupidity. Walk out of hall and queue up for the refund Sajid Khan promised you. See you there!

Himmatwala’ is a lesson in ridiculousness, and a painfully long one at that. It blatantly assaults our senses, visual and mental, leaving us severely scarred. In director Sajid Khan’s trademark style, he botches up an already over-the-top 80’s original, by the same title, with innumerable, nonsensical twists and turns. He’s so focused on the buffoonery and dim-witted dialogues, that there’s very little that will tickle you in ‘Himmatwala’. I do know that apart from Sajid, there are many, who might enjoy such frivolity, but for some, who’ve not lost their senses, just yet, this is such a waste of valuable time.Evidently, it takes a brave heart (himmatwala) to endure this one!

The 80's make a tacky come back in Himmatwala. Yes, the props and the sets are in sync (posters of Madonna from her Like a Virgin days) and the colors are jarring enough to remind us ofDoordarshan's pre telecast static screen days, but despite the trickery and tom foolery, what lacks is the right approach to making a regressive age old story of revenge and justice. Coming from a director who claims to represent majority of the country's audience and hascarved a niche for himself through TV shows, Himmatwala is a sorry excuse for a film.

If you are seriously planning for Sajid Khan's Himmatwala this weekend, here's a warning for you - Do not spoil your next two days. This movie has all the ingredients to make you go lunatic. Yes, I'm certainly not exaggerating as I mean it. We understand the need of funny, light-hearted movies these days, amidst our busy schedule, but this (Himmatwala) is more of a torture than any sort of entertainment. On the whole, I would suggest, even if you get a free ticket for Himmatwala, please do not take the risk and give it a big miss. Honestly, I still can't believe that I'm in my fine senses after watching the nonsensical Himmatwala.

I will not even read one review. I don't hate critics, but I feel that 90 percent of them don't love cinema. They are just doing a job."

  32. “Well, I am a dog. What more can I offer to you…a puppy” [Kutta hoon, aur kya de sakta hoon...Pappi! (Kiss in colloquial Hindi)]. This is the level of writing and humour targeted and achieved in Sajid Khan’s homage to 80’s Bollywood HIMMATWALA. Exactly in same approach, I would like to proclaim on behalf of Sajid, “Well, I am Sajid Khan. What more can I offer to you…a mindless illogical entertainer! & I don’t bother if it entertains only me”. In fact, this is the only & the best thing that works for the film that you know precisely what to expect from a Sajid Khan film.

So, there is a mother who works as domestic help for livelihood, a sister who wears nicely tattered and patched up dresses, a lost son who comes back to rescue innocent villagers from nasty landholder and his weird sidekick and to regain ‘baap ki khoi huyi izzat’, and then there is a so called rich modern girl who hates ‘Gareebs, the poor’ but surprisingly changes into an Indian plain Jane in salwar suit after falling in love with our hero in a lifesaving episode. But who will save the audience when everyone else associated with the film on/off screen decide to test your patience and sensibility with yesteryear’s hit formula that sure looks alien in present time. I am not in disregard of the fact that even I used to love it in the past but then there is something called evolution…and that’s been completely missed in HIMMATWALA- the remake.

Ajay Devgn is a competent actor and he pulls out each & every scene, even the most absurd one also, with so much ease, credibility and comfort that you don’t really have any hold against him as an actor. In the name of entertainment, the makers could only come up with ‘bum pe laat’ kind of songs, Kadar Khan’s soul confined into Paresh Rawal’s body and his one-liners when he uses termology of today’s times like YouTube and swine flu in 80’s to give a hint of the future world 20 years later. Most of the times you don’t really laugh at jokes but the absurdity you would never watch if you had an option to switch the screen off.

150 min of mind-numbing melodrama, lifeless writing, hammering action and creepy comedy! ENTERTAINMENT IS DEFINITELY AT STAKE. [1.5/5]

  58. It is really surprising that most of teh film columnist are referring to the old film as an average film this old himmatwala average film was the fourth highest grosser in the year 1983 and speaking about new himmatwala film directed by sajid khan I do not spoli my old memories asscoaited with the old himmatwala. The problem with sajid is that he is super overconfident and think critics are fools and the audience shall watch his film whatever critics says about his film but sajid forgot that the film becomes blockbuster by repeat audience as you know yourself as you saw himmatwala again and again. Even then sajid best of luck for your film what if the film did not cross 100 crores next time carefully select your wrds before opening your mouth.

  61. Himmatwalaa ... all about Sher, Sherni, Maa, Behen ... lol! '3 mistake of sajid's life':
    1) His dengebaazi that if people don't whistle on Ajay's entry, to paise baapas! That ... uh ... it will be counted in top 3 entry in Bollywood ... well, tiger kaa sahaaraa leke bhi nahi chalaa. Moral of story: don't count your chicken before ... (you know next)...
    2) Demoted Ravi, the central character from engineer (1983) to a streetfighter (2013). Yaar, 30 years baad usse nuclear scientist banaa detaa to kuchh nayaa dekhne ko miltaa... and besides streetfighter needs no further himmat, he's born with it! Its like making a movie about a terrorist who keeps on repeating after every 15 minutes that he is not a terrorist ... such a character is called a 'pakaau dimaag'. Imagine, now a himmatwala calling himself himmatwala, nayaa kyaa???
3)Himmatwala of 1983 is wrongly depicted as a 'masala entertainer' and that's where Sajid went wrong in 2013! Well it isn't - and that's the boo-boo trail that the director kept on stubbornly going through as a Mr. Right, Mr Perfect and Mr. All Time Blockbuster - all rolled into one. Puts Manmohan Desai's (Sajid's idol) head stomped into shame if he were alive. Anyway, to prevent the boo boo he should have beta-tested his movie on select mock audience who could compare it with what they saw 30 years ago...

  64. Sajid Khan has the tendency to pull out huge masses. He says he exactly knows what audiences want. Is that really so? Would you believe that after watching ‘Himmatwala’?
‘Himmatwala’ is the perfect example of the director’s over confidence. If you in person have a good sense of humor, that doesn’t mean you would make a good film out of it. That exactly happens with Sajid Khan’s latest venture.

‘Himmatwala’, set in 1980’s, is the story of Ravi (Ajay Devgan) who returns home to fight against the injustice happened to his family two decades ago. The villain here is the Sarpanch (Mahesh Manjrekar). The hero saves his daughter (Tamannah Bhatia) from a wild tiger and she eventually falls for him. Along with such a bizzare, there is also some family drama taking place side by side.

The biggest problem with ‘Himmatwala’ is that the director is trying to do too many things at a time which simply does not work. Even you would laugh at the emotional scenes of the movie. I don’t know if the director intentionally wanted to do that or it just happened to me naturally. Plus, the long running time of 150 minutes tests your patience too much.

Ajay Devgan should now choose his films wisely; this is definitely not what he deserves. Tamannah is a waste; she hardly knows how to act. Mahesh Manjrekar does justice to his role. The only thing I liked about ‘Himmatwala’ was Paresh Rawal; he is of first rate. Even if it is a bad script, he would definitely bring a smile on your face.

I never watched the original Himmatwala, but if this actually is the remake of the original, I would prefer not watching it. Watch it at your own risk. Highly Disappointed!

    Rating- 1.5/5

  66. I just dont understand that why the hell do people hate the movie so much, For me it was excellent I just loved the movie. Sajid Khan became my favourite director after this film because he makes such good movies like the Housefull franchise. I have watched the more than 20 times and still not been able to understand how on earth is it such a bad movie. Because seriously If I would be given a chance of watching films like Dabangg 2, Kahani & Wanted even once & watching Himmatwala 100 times I would still go watch Himmatwala because I would prefer to die rather than watch those movies because they tortured the hell out of me.

But still critics don't hate those films as much as they hate Himmatwala which is being made a scapegoat. God is extremely unfair that films like those become such blockbusters & Himmatwala is being made a scapegoat. Due to that I even stopped believing in God because the world is extremely unfair where such disastrous films are applauded & good movies like Himmatwala are criticized very badly. That's why for me word of mouth & movie reviews don't matter at all because I don't believe in them. I just ignore them & watch each and every film without any discrimination.

That's the reason why I don't believe in critics because they don't even know which movies to love & which movies to hate. They just suck in their jobs, so much that they don't even deserve to write reviews forget about us reading them.

People love movies such as Kahani which was easily one of the worst Vidya Balan movies but still it went on to become an all time blockbuster

Dabangg 2 would have easily been the biggest flop of 2012 had it not been for Salman Khan. Dabangg 2 survived just because of the Salman mania & not because it was a good film. Just because of Salman it film could become the 2nd biggest hit of 2012

Wanted was such a torture that I watch it, because for me it is reference point on how not to make a film. I compare it with new movies deciding whether it is worse or better than Wanted because it for me it is a measuring scale on good movies & bad movies.

As long as Salman used to make good films it often used to be flops etc. But as soon as he started making bad movies he became an phenomenon right in the league of Rajesh Khanna between 1969 - 1971 & Amitabh Bachchan from 1975 - 1984. The Dabangg Series is easily the worst series in the history of Indian cinema which just ran just because of Salman Khan. Had Salman Khan not starred in lead role in those films it would easily become one of the biggest flops of their respective years. They were even worser than even Joker

When movies like Dabangg 2 become bigger than hits than movies like Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan, Jab Tak Hai Jaan etc it just makes me think that why on earth are movies like the Dabangg franchise become such big hits compared to such great films because it encourages people to make such movies to torture the hell out of the audience. People still prefer to watch disasters like Dabangg 2 rather than good movies like Himmatwala. Sometimes I really get pity on the audience that they are watch such disastrous films but stilll somehow they just love them

I am completely sure that if Salman Khan starred in the lead tole in Himmatwala then just forget about it being hated so much it would have one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. I just wonder if movies like the Dabangg franchise can become such big blockbusters then what can a film like Himmatwala become. It would come very close to even the highest grossing films in Bollywood 3 Idiots & Ek Tha Tiger and would have been a sure all time blockbuster. Sajid made a blunder of not starring Salman in the lead role. Because if people can love films like the Dabangg franschise then for them Himmatwala would have been like an oscar nominated film.

  67. The audience really needed the 'Himmat' to watch this movie. I saw this movie on Wave Cinema and to my shock it was not at all power with the original 'Himmatwala'. Sad story for Sajid who was so confident for for his movie.

  68. Respected Sir Sajid Khan said, Himmatwala will be biggest hit and among top 3 in 2013. In first week it will gross 100cr. It would be Ajay Devgan's career biggest hit, during first three days there will be no tickets, people will come back thrice to see Devgan's entry and my dialogues are better than Kadar Khan's in 183 film. Friends plz do add if I have missed any thing claimed and openly challenged by Sir Sajid Khan. Now the person who was farting from his mouth has disappeared in the thin air. He doesn't have the balls to face media..the same media where he was throughing challenges to critics n everybody who asked questions. Mr. Vashu Bhagnani, this Sajid Khan who looks like simply Faraha Khan's male version has made you a big time APRIL FOOL.
