Jab Tak Hai Jaan Movie Review

The truth is that whether you agree with, or aren't a fan of Chopra's brand of love stories, he conveys them with complete conviction. Chopra and his leading man lend Jab Tak Hai Jaan an indelible charm. It's that charm, coupled with the filmmaker's trademark freshness, passion, and tenderness, that still keeps you invested in these characters and their star-crossed romance.I'm going with three out of five for the late Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Despite its many script problems, it's a consistently watchable film that oozes with feeling and real emotion. A fitting swan song.

JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not your typical love story. It has the old-world charm written all over it, with twists and turns plenty. It would be a disservice if one were to reveal the journey of the three principal characters -- Samar, Meera and Akira -- since the plot changes from conventional to unconventional in its second hour. JAB TAK HAI JAAN is attention-grabbing from inception till conclusion. The drama only soars higher and the complex love story gets more and more gripping as the conflict between the characters come to the fore. Mind you, JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not the usual 'love triangle', with two women fighting for the same guy. Nor can you compare it with any Yash Chopra film of yore either. On the whole, JAB TAK HAI JAAN resonates an oft-repeated fact: Love stories will come and go. But no one will make them like Yash Chopra. Just don't miss this heartwarming love story!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the swan song of Yash Chopra, the big daddy of romance. Every frame is picture perfect, the emotions are well nuanced. But there is one inherent flaw--the story by Aditya Chopra is hackneyed. You will not like Jab Tak Hai Jaan if mushy romances are not your staple. The movie doesn't have the intensity of some of Yash Chopra's earlier romances like Daag, Kabhie-Kabhie, Silsila and Chandni. But it still has the stamp of the man who made some of the best romantic fare in Bollywood.

In any case, you don't go to a Yash Chopra movie to delve into realism or the messiness of relationships. You go to partake in a fantasy of swooning, idealised love - and Jab Tak Hai Jaan delivers plenty of that. This film has all the elements you would want in a Yash Chopra film - gorgeously shot locations in the UK and Kashmir, lavish songs and three inherently noble lead characters who struggle gallantly against their individual obligations. But what Jab Tak Hai Jaan does not have is a coherent plot.Jab Tak Hai Jaan is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.

A Yash Chopra drama that treads very familiar territory slickly - and a fair bit too slowly - but does so with an old-world sincerity that somehow makes most of it bearable. Rather like its leading man, who is often made to balance entire scenes on his dimples, grinning so wide his eyes appear closed. There are times in Jab Tak Hai Jaan when it's hard not to feel embarrassed for Shah Rukh Khan having to work with material this tedious - and yet he, despite the exaggerated show of youngness, manages inexplicably to charm. This is his film, and, against all odds, he works it well.

The mushy moments at the heart of the love story might feel a tad pulpy at times. ButJab Tak Hai Jaan leaves a soothing afterglow. You have seen it all before, notably in Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara. Yet, Jab Tak Hai Jaan exudes a surprising degree of freshness. It stems from the quirky new-age twists that the screenplay throws into the mix. Watch Jab Tak Hai Jaan not just for the obvious sentimental reason but for the fact that it shows, for one last time, what Bollywood will miss now that the undisputed master of romantic sagas is no more.

Aditya Chopra’s story is outstanding, with plenty of twists and turns. The two love stories – of Samar with Meera, and of Akira with Samar – are wonderful and completely different from each other. On the whole, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is poetry on celluloid. It is a movie marvel. It is a piece of cinematic history. It is a blockbuster… sorry, a super blockbuster. It will have a long and meritorious run in the multiplexes and cinemas.

The story may be set in today’s times, but the theme is very Yash Chopra, wherein true love happens only once in a lifetime, and it trumps all else. Finally, though, what keeps you with the film is Shah Rukh Khan who is first-rate. Watch this one for Shah Rukh, who can still do the dimpled boy wonder and the older, mature lover with a wry smile and wounded wink and s**y nudge.

What’s Good: The well-played out love stories; the music; the direction and cinematography. What’s Bad: The tiring climax; some performances. Loo Break: None. Watch or Not?: Jab Tak Hai Jaan is worth a watch. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is worth a watch, and that’s not just to pay your last respects to the legend Yash Chopra. It’s a movie that puts the mushy, filmy craziness back in love stories.

The King of Romance behind the camera directing the Badshah of Romance in front of the camera. And a script that boasts of solid, undying love. No, there cannot be a better way to portray love on the silver screen. ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ has nailed that – at least for the immediate future. Shah Rukh Khan, you don’t really need words of praise or adulation; but go ahead and take a bow!. In case you still haven’t, go watch ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. You can thank the Kings of Romance once you’re done with the film… nahi bhoolenge hum, jab tak hai jaan! Four cheers for this one!

  13. Late Mr. Yash Chopra WAS, IS & WILL BE the king of romance in Bollywood, one should never put that statement in question...but with due respect to the legend, I must admit that his last offering JAB TAK HAI JAAN will only be remembered as his last, not more-not less.

Though you do relish the trademark of the filmmaker having strikingly amazing foreign locations (...& the our own magical Leh-Laddakh in countable parts), beautifully shot songs, well-defined characteristics of totally lovable female leads and even the emotions are quite in place but alas! forced situations, not so convincing twists-n-turns, 3 long hours of duration (...trust me, it made me restless to sit through for more than a couple of times) and last but never the least, it has one of the most convenient and hell of predictable writing that subtracts to the experience by large. When a girl of 21 born & brought up in UK delivers lines like 'meri mummy mere papa ko akela chhodkar BHAAG gayi' it sure sounds weird...and that was not even the trailer, there are more!

Ok, so you must be wondering if there is no high-points? Of course it has. Watch out for the short n sweet cameos by the cutest pair on screen ever..the inimitable Rishi and the gorgeous Neetu kapoor. Their chemistry in those two scenes look more real than any other in the film. Then, there is a superbly choreographed and performed dance prelude to the song 'ishq shava', the refreshing anushka sharma as the loud spoken-confident-straight on your face girl of today...and if you are a die-hard shahrukh fan, I will not argue you can consider the whole film a high point.

Could be just another case of 'high expectations-low performance', but it's never going to affect or defect my utter respect to the Yash Chopra. You will be missed, Sir...but not for this! STRICTLY WATCHABLE (2.5/5)

  23. Well, I just watched the movie 1st show, its just a good love story but not the best. It still misses the charm of Mohobatein or Darr. Its an average movie with heavy starcast. About the Story of the movie, Its the Combination of Ghajni(1st Half) and VeerZaara (2nd Half). Performance is OK but You will not find that jaw trembling Shahrukh lips in the movie. Final Verdict is "Its a good Movie with good songs, good Location Shooting and good Performance but not the Best in any Case". If U r a die hard fan of Shahrukh, Definitely go for it... Else wait for TAALASH of Amir in 30th Nov 2012. :)

  32. “THE HEART THAT TRULY LOVES NEVER FORGETS”!! Those who connect to this soulful thought must go 4 JTHJ.. others may opt for SOS.
Though the movie wont b called a Yash raj classic yet its young, its fresh, its entertaining, its Soulful and in typical yashraj way its sugar coated with love, romance, sacrifice and wait. its a movie for lovers and those who respect or understand love.

Movie starts with love and ends with love. The concept is a serious love story but the romance is way fresh and entertaining. Movie is abit lenghty and sumtimes u do feel anxious about slow pace but den the story keeps u holding to the seat. Commenting on acting and sirection wud b a crime as its always the best. songs r gud.. dance sequence b4 ishq shava emerges the winner tough..

its a movie which most will like.. if u liked veer zara den dis movie is definately for u.. if u didnt like veer zara den this movie is a second chance for u to understand n feel love. yet if u r more of dabang and rowdy rathode fan den better opt 4 SOS dan watching a soulful movie forcefully n later bitching abt it. its definately a good and entertaing love story... one time watch tough as it sumhow fails to penetrate ur heart deeper like previous yash raj romances. i would recommend this movie.. it vl surely find respectable place in best movies of the year.. go 4 it.. i giv it a 3.5 (0.5 extra for SRK n Yash ji)

SOS is a movie that has a chance to stand for next 10 weeks in the cinemas and jthj doesn"t..I know all are srk's fans but trut is a truth..if this movie would have been made with any other actor I wouldn't have evn rated it 1 star..so all the raings are just for sharukh and nothing else..if shooting at foreign locations will gather audiences why wouldn't fox traveller release a movie..
Don't get personal guys..dnt waste your money on jthj..its a disaster..

Katrina for acting: minus 10 stars
SHARUKH: WE HAV SEEN IT ENOUGH..LARN FROM OTHER KHANS DO SOMETHING DIFF..I THINK HE IS SUFFERING AMNESIA..STILL STUCK IN VEER ZARA..ONLY DIR LIKE ANURAG OR RHIT SHETTY CAN PLL YOU OUT.

Some people are not ready to digest the fact that 'JAB TAK HAI JAAN' has an upper hand as compared to 'SON OF SARDAR' in terms of box office report, excellent reviews, fabulous public response and liking....although the reports have already proven it..... Excuses like Yash Chopra's sudden demise or JTHJ getting more screens will not lessen the effect of Yashji's last classic film....The Diwali effect and comparison with JTHJ may help SOS initially...but in the long run, JTHJ is surely going to set a benchmark in Hindi film Industry and it will be proved that why Yash Chopra was a legendary and most respectable filmmaker that we have ever got...

  40. Few one liners for JTHJ by me:

->My mistake till date to over-look Yash Chopra as The Romance King. (RIP Sir!)
->JTHJ is a sheer brilliance of what a love film can be. (Hats off)
->Hardly believe this cud have done, even thought by any other recent film-maker.
->A bit lengthy though (the only draw back).
->Intense Story, Brilliant, Just Brilliant presentation of turning points and situations.
->Boring songs, not-needed-ones types! (Except 'Challa' and its cool music)
->Nice watch! (ppl who hated it, I must say now they are over-fun-loving...:P )
->Anushka: simply rocked...KAT: dilli duur hai !...SRK: I am still not ur big fan but yaar aapne to waat laga di Sallu ki (ekdum below-the-belt types)...not coz of performance....but ab kya bolu..:P
->And I am still not that drama-film-lover types, coz going to watch Son of Sardar too... tomorrow... :P

Oh yes.. I am not a film critic or smthing but I wrote this much to tell ppl who completely disliked this flick....."Guys you are yet to grow up....have patience !!" :P:P

    and yeah...ek aur one-liner.. :-)
->Girls will be girls! ('Their LOL Decisions'......can be turning point of a movie...and life) :D

MORE THAN 100 BOMBS ARE DIFFUSED .AT LEAST ONE SHOULD HAVE EXPLODE THIS DIWALI.THE CHARM IS ALSO MISSING FROM SOS WITH VERY LESS COMIC SEQUENCES ,NO DEPTH IN STORY & UNNECESSARY SONGS INTERFERE IN BETWEEN.SINCERELY I GOT BORED FROM BOTH............jaan tu bhi bekar wo sardar bhi bekar bas hum bane bewkhoof phir do baar......

  54. With due respect to late Mr. Yash Chopda... JTHJ seems to be ratake / remake of Veer Zaara... not worthy of the hype, too lengthy & especially music is below average. no body is going to remember single sound track from the movie...
