In Skyfall, Sam Mendes, the Oscar-winning director of American Beauty, has delivered a thrilling addition to the 007 movie legacy, and a film that strikes just the right balance between familiarity and freshness. Hard-core franchise loyalists may argue this isn’t the Bond they grew up with. But it’s only fair that each new filmmaker who takes a stab at 007 be allowed to interpret it his own way. Mendes, for his part, does a bang-up job.I’m going with four out of five for Skyfall. Don’t ask if you should watch this film, ask when you should watch it. The answer is right away!

Skyfall is possibly the most emotional Bond movie yet, James re-visiting his childhood home, M facing her exit. But alongside its sentimentality, it has standard Bond fun - Oriental heavies, hissing Iguanas, casinos, cocktails, backless gowns, melting kisses in warm showers, sadism, saxophones and sparkling repartee. Sure, it sags slightly, gets teary-eyed and despite a hot Miss Moneypenny (Harris), its s**iness feels a tad restrained. But catch Skyfall anyhow. It's still special enough for your eyes only.Tip-Off: You won't like this movie if you never really bought that whole Bond-babes-Britain thing.

Skyfall is, at heart, a crowdpleaser. Sam's film, which deserves actually to be the first of at least three, isn't as resonant or as original, but it is fabulously refreshing and light enough to have heads bobbing along, chorally humming the theme. It may not be jazz, but like its villain demonstrates, sometimes all we need is -- *pop*.

Punchy one-liners, designer costumes, the best cinematography that money can buy and stunts that will no doubt be imitated extensively -- Skyfall has them all. Those who relish a slight twist to the Bond series won't be disappointed. Those who seek a mindless 007 may nitpick. It's certainly smarter than the last few Bonds that have zipped in and out of the viewer's mind. The impact of this espionage adventure lasts after it has ended.

Any which way you look at Skyfall, James Bond -- the film and the character -- have matured. If Mendes mixes it all up nicely, he is amply helped in this direction by Craig, who excels once again in his role as the 007, and a superlative Bardem

The film, anchored in realism, has its dry spells in terms of action. While the pacing wasn't as spot-on as it was in Casino Royale, the idea of Bond growing wary of the spy game's shortcomings, and succumbing to the temptations of putting himself above others was a worthwhile idea. Skyfall must be watched for the quality of performances that one doesn't encounter often in action thrillers. That and how it carries on a 50-year pop culture repository down a new direction while being mindful, if not overly reverential of its legacy

Half way through I thought this was going into my top three Bond films list, but suddenly all the plot potential goes out of the window. Skyfall is not a perfectly structured film. It starts off at a fast pace and by the end it drags. The last sequence is unbelievable and hence makes this film strangely ineffectual.

The film isn’t just about Bond. It is about his and M’s relationship, it is about M and her journey over the years as the head of secret service and it is about Silva who has a personal vendetta which spills out on the streets of London. The film also takes Bond back to the basics. So does the film live up to the hype? Yes in more ways than one and summarises the 50 illustrious years of the franchise perfectly.

Putting the "intelligence" in MI6, "Skyfall" reps a smart, savvy and incredibly satisfying addition to the 007 oeuvre, one that places Judi Dench's M at the center of the action. Refreshingly unlike the first 20 Bond installments and yet completely of a piece with the franchise's core values, "Skyfall" continues the stripped-down approach introduced in "Casino Royale," completing Bond's transformation from kiss-kiss-bang-bang action figure to full-fledged character.

  2. In celebration of completing its 50 enthralling years in the show-business, the latest bond flick ‘SKYFALL’ manages to rise and shine above the rest with its ‘bigger the better’attitude.

From an innovatively done opening credits, exhilarating chase sequences, bold & aggressive ‘in your face’ action to smartly written engaging one-liners and a villain who’s always one step ahead in planning the most bizarre outburst of anger…all this have been the key-lookouts in any 007 movie till date but as I said before, this time its bigger than ever, in any & every sense.

Daniel Craig returns as the best confidant to ‘M’ [Judi Dench gives her blood to bring it live], in order to save MI6 from the rage & wrath of an uncanny mind whose roots are buried and overlooked years back in MI6 itself [sorry, can’t reveal much]. Wickedness & evil roars loud to chill your bones under a new arresting face of Javier Bardem. He strikes every chord right to make it my favorite & ‘the most fascinating villain of the series’.

Except one or two not-so-surprising sequences especially the final face-off between Daniel & Bardem; it has, in its mostly gripping 143 minutes of duration, plenty of ‘on the edge of your seat’ moments that are unpredictable and impulsive. It is the best bond film I have seen…and I hope you would not miss it too. [3.5]

  3. Mr Gaurav sir, i would appreciate if you can keep your reviews short, simple and to the point. I have seen same kind of stuff in para and paras in other movie reviews too...Me and friends say its like reading essay article boss goes on and on....on a mobile your essay would look long and if net speed is slow it does not turn up well :(...one small suggestion from our side..
we are gonna watch this bond film..thanks again

  4. I just saw Skyfall , believe me it's a completly boring movie.I am very eagerly waiting for this movie , so I postpone today all my preponed works & go for the bond. But I get a solid fall from this sky.As usual opening chasing sequence was mind blowing, after that the thriller becomes a chiller. This time bond have only two gadgets a gamma radio to trace the bond & a pistol which no one can handle except bond.Slowly slowly as movie progresses you got bored & very dissapointed. Before writing this comment I read all the reviews and I am completly surprised with theeir reviews. Either they are genius or am I dumb? Still if u want for a fall go to the sky with 007.........................

    2. Right bro...I'll give 2.9 stars just because of bond otherwise 2.5

    3. i too agree with u too.
it was so boring that i eat two tubs of popcorn so that i can have some taste while ignoring the boring
      mummy-son drama.
What a lethargic work , even hollywood goes into Lazy Mode. Worst bond movie, which dosent have any great bond girl, dosent have any great chase sequences (except the first one) dosent have any shiny cars (except the old one) , This is all but a James Bond Movie should be.

    4. "Either they are genius or am I dumb?"

      Ans: You are dumb.

This movie the mostly story oriented than just a traditional Bond movie. Your English itself suggests that you could not catch the story line.
You missed many important conversations in the movie. Haven't you?

    5. I didn't knew real truths are so stupid. Yeah i forgot, Skyfall didn't had an item number of Karina-Katrina may be that's why u r so pissed. Go and watch ek tha tiger kid.

    6. Agree mate!

The movie is different from its predecessors with a fresh look. But pouring 4 or 5 stars from the sky for the skyfall is unjustified. It starts with good pace like bourne series but not quite enough to carry on till the end. I would rate it 3/5.

  5. SKYFALL COULDN'T STAND TALL

i woke up early today to catch the first show of the movie and it turned out to that dish which was good but could be so much better. . .
i will like to review it part by part

    1. ACTING (main characters):
Mr. bond- Daniel Craig is spot on undoubtedly best james bond in decades.
M- judi dench is as always very professional flawless is the word.
Javier Bardem- he was seriously underutilized one of the finest actor in world cinema and we have seen how effectively he can play a bad guy (read " no country for old men") he was at his convincing best in his short screen space, unfortunately he was introduced too late and his character was not well defined. It surely was the opportunity lost here what could turn out to be the best villain portrayal of the entire series would go down history too quick and easy.

    Action/gadgets:
Well it has more action then casino royale or quantum of solace but apart from starting chase sequence most of the action scenes were been there done that. No fancy gadgets.

    Background music:
Background score was fresh nice and crisp and to it the official skyfall song which really is heart warming and beautifully sung.

    Cinematography/ visual appeal:
This is where the movie scores above casino royale which in itself was indulging visual treat. This movie has grand appeal opulence and there are some spectacular visuals especially the one in Shanghai and Macau.

    Story:
This is where this movie is a let down the writing is not tight and there are too many loopholes, in parts of story you will think how exactly he could do that??? In second half movie becomes predictable and with run time of nearly 2.5 hours it turns out to be a drag in the end and you would wish they should just get over with it quickly.
but some witty and punchy dialogues keeps you amused.

    final verdict:
    score 3/5
but expectations from this one was quite high if you have casino royale fresh in your mind this will be a let down but if you have not seen it or don't remember it than it is better than most bond movies and will entertain you. just like the case with last two batman movies dark knight was epic so was casino royale( in it's own league not putting it on same plate) but dark knight rises was a lot let down for hardcore batman fans as it tried too much, same goes for skyfall.

    1. Pretty good review i thought SKYFALL was the most satisfying action movie of the year after TDKR and Raid: Redemption. Good to see Indians taking cinema seriously. Post your review on IMDb SKYFALL movie boards, u'll get better replies there.

    2. this ranks among the best movies made this year along with dark knight rises .. it was a complete James bond package at its superlative best with stunts, chases, villains .. the only problem is that it did not have vodka martini in it

  6. please pardon me for grammatical and spelling errors.
I am just trying to give unbiased opinion as a movie lover to this movie lovers community.

  7. It might b little below expectations but on its own skyfall is a perfect entertainer. unlike a bond movie skyfall has less stunts, less gagets n less twist n turns.. the movie is well scripted to say gud bye to judi dench with respect, but doin so the movie goes likely on path of die hard series.. with move guns n bombs n simple predictable storyline skyfall is not a regular bond style movie. it keeps u wanting for more stunts n some gadget fun.

but dat dosnt mean skyfall is a let down. Craig once again proves he is the best bond ever.. judi dench gets the best script ever as M.. as villain Javier Bardem is a pleasent surprise. with almost 2.5 hrs runing time movie seems little slow often.. but being a bond movie its definately a must watch. go for skyfall, a bond movie is nevr a waste of muny.
    my rating 3.5/5

    3. Yes, He is, waiting to see Sherlock stealing the show as well as Craig, so far in Modern Bond movies (After Goldeneye) Skyfall iis the best Bond movie i feel, Casino Royale gives competition to this, Perfect amount of Story, Humor, Emotions, Action and a perfect Bad Guy steals the show. Loved it <3

  14. Here's my mini review if anyone interested:

"Okay now when Quantum of Solace got released many Bond fans bashed this movie by saying this isn't a Bond movie at all, many people said that the classic charm and persona of Bond has been finished now and its impossible to reborn it if they still continued to make Daniel Craig Bond in the next movie. Well, here we are Bond fans, Sam Mendes have heard you all! SKYFALL isn't just a typical Bond movie or a popcorn entertainer, it will surprise you with superb script and extraordinary show putted by Dench, Craig and Bardem. Well you got to say Bardem stole the show, his performance will definitely count as the best villain after Joker in TDK. From Bond's Martini to Martin everything was just put into a right place. A perfect action film overall.
Hollywood isn't disappointing this year, Skyfall is an another example. Go and watch the Resurrection of Mr. BOND, JAMES BOND."

    1. very true this year hollywood has produced some fascinating movies right from the beginning of the year.

talking about skyfall if we do-not compare it with casino royale it really is very well made film, really how many action movies with same level of panache and sophistication and this well acted we get to see, only once in a while we get to see such action movies which are appreciated for acting and direction and not for their bullets fired to kill ratio but at the same time we must also admit that their were short comings in the movie which well eventually refrain it from going in all time great category..
