The Vow Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive(CNN IBN)

Although it packs in all the usual trademarks of a sappy Nicholas Sparks-style adaptation, 'The Vow' claims to be based on a true story. And those are always the ones you least believe. Not because the premise seems implausible… No! Because by the time it's been Hollywood-ised and sent through the studio machinery, it comes out looking like any other gooey rom-com intended to melt the hearts of its 16-year-old female demographic.I'm going with a generous two out of five for 'The Vow'. Chicks will dig Tatum as the beefcake with a soft, sensitive heart. Just don't expect anything more.

The formula The Vow applies to make one fall in love all over again is simple: Moments! Moments is what one needs to relive.... Moments of impact define who we are. As for your moments of romantic bliss, there are a couple of 'aaaahhh' moments, though felt after long gaps. Case in point, Channing Tatum's Leo who first is seen as the epitome of patience trying to get his wife to follow the normal routine till he ultimately refuses to be her punching bag. Not to miss is his struggle doubled with his wife's mean parents and ex fiancee, Jeremy's ( Scott Speedman) re-entry into her life. Next is Rachel McAdams as the blanked out wife who just can't understand why she chose to marry a struggling musician. Greencard, perhaps! We, however, wish there were a few more 'moments' to carry back home....

The plot itself is highly contrived, focusing on a lot that doesn't matter -- Paige's high school friends for instance -- and little on what does. She is remarkably nonchalant about giving Leo up to move back to her rich parents, who obviously disaprove of him, and to rejoin at her father's bidding the law school she had given up.It must be nice to be able to forget a spouse once in a while. But, believe me, it isn't this nice.
