They couldn't have come up with a more inappropriate title for the new Akshay Kumar starrer than De Dana Dan, a term usually used to signify something quick. The thing is, Priyadarshan's latest comedy is anything but quick. At two hours and 40 minutes, it's a laboriously long, patience-testing exercise in idiocy about some 20-odd characters stuck in a five-star hotel where mistaken identities and misunderstandings result in loud arguments, comic-book action and crude humor.Over the years one has lowered one's expectations considerably when going in to watch a Priyadarshan comedy. De Dana Dan is no different.I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan; carry ear plugs with you, or a Saridon. Or both. A migraine is guaranteed.

Be forewarned. DE DANA DAN is the most bizarre film from the maharaja of laughathons, Priyadarshan. Be cautioned. DE DANA DAN is a loud film, with each and every character screaming on top of his/her voice, with the characters shouting, running, even floating and swimming in the end. But what do you expect in a Priyadarshan film that has a title like DE DANA DAN? The promos never promised path-breaking or thought-provoking cinema that would give birth to debates and discussions. So why look for logic in this one? This one's not for the hard-nosed types, but for those who worship escapist cinema. Who want to chuckle, giggle and chortle at those mindless jokes. In short, DE DANA DAN is a pure dhamaal entertainer!

Hara-kiri, did we say! Or is it simply a case of bad judgement. Whatever be the case, De Dana Dan is a film that begins soundly and then slips into cuckoo land, only because the primary characters and their story is side-tracked for a compendium of tertiary tales. And these too, are so confusing, you keep losing the plot and the character count even though you desperately try and keep pace with the mayhem in this marriage that mostly transpires in a hotel in Singapore.Too many characters in the second half, too long drawn a climax (and completely over the top too). De Dana Dan delivers in bits and pieces alone. The humour is mostly slapstick and the plot wafer thin. Most of the laughs are provided by Akshay's Sad Sack butler act coupled with some rib tickling hysteria by Paresh Rawal. No, this one's not quite the end-of-the-year laugh riot.

Priyadarshan, refusing as always to call himself a director -- 'filmed by,' proclaim his credits -- attempts to stitch together this ragtag quilt in his usual style, ending up with a stupidly elaborate monstrosity. All manner of morons -- philanderers, dognappers, murderers, hookers, marriagable daughters and dumb-waiters -- congregate in a plush Singapore hotel, and chaos ensues. Big surprise.Yet the film has been a damp squib right from the get go. The flaccid first half never quite recovers, and while the second half musters up a few genuine moments of mirth -- mostly because Manoj Joshi's face turns positively scarlet in anger -- it's too cruelly long to really help things. Also one suspects those rare second-half laughs occur simply because one is mindnumbed into submission.

De Dana Dan also almost marks a decade of the widespread acceptability that the slapstick genre has gained in scarcity of sane comedies. As the name suggests, De Dana Dan is a quickie flick which is hastily written, rapidly filmed, has swift storytelling and speeding characters giving you no time to breathe, gasp, feel, absorb react or relate. The film takes time to kick-off and nothing much happens in the first half. The second half gains momentum with cross-connections of characters inside the hotel. The more you attempt to keep a track of the individual tracks, the more it confuses you. The less you try to join the links, the more it binds you. What could have been the USP of the film, acts against it with the comic chemistry of Akshay-Paresh-Sunil clearly missing.

The movie
starts out funny but gradually becomes more and more exhausting. The film sticks to what seems to have become the standard formula for Bollywood comedies. You recall Daddy Cool, Do Knot Disturb, All the Best De Dana Dan is one more from that school of laughter. The film gets more tedious as the plot gets more convoluted and by the climax, in which everyone floats around as the hotel gets flooded, I could barely keep my eyes open. The humour is so labored that I felt like someone was beating me to laugh. I’m always happy to revel in pedestrian comedy but De Dana Dan feels more like work than entertainment.

De Dana Dan will almost certainly end up giving you a headache. Unless you revel in comedy where every character shrieks and screams, women are spoken of in a degrading manner and loud decibel levels give you a kick, this one's not for you. Not that the film does not have its moments. But when in a 2 hours, 45 minutes movie you barely chuckle a couple of times and laugh out loud once, there's reason to worry. The audience may have been kind to the actor-director duo in the past, but with De Dana Dan they seem to be taking viewers for a ride. Now, that kind of Hera Pheri is unacceptable.

De Dana Dan follows the 3Cs of a Priyadarshan comedy – cash, confusion and lots of chases. Faithfully obeying his own template, the director could might as well have made this film in his sleep. It's a film targeted at a mass audience looking for a light hearted joy ride at the theatre. Though the jokes and situations are not exactly new, the fast paced treatment elevates the impact of the film.De Dana Dan doesn't aspire to be a Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Rajkumar Hirani product. It's got its goal clear and delivers what it promises. It would be harsh to run it down by drawing unnecessary comparisons with classic comedies. De Dana Dan has tremendous entertainment value. Given the style of most Bollywood comedies - De Dana Dan is the funniest film of the season.

Stripped to its bone, Rensil D'silva's Kurbaan is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that seldom loses its grip on your attention. Credible performances from its leads, and a nail-biting screenplay make up for the plot holes that threaten to eat into this otherwise engaging film. The key problem with Kurbaan, however, is that it can't decide if it wants to be a serious film addressing a burning issue, or a commercial potboiler set against the backdrop of terrorism.Despite its hiccups, Kurbaan works as a suspenseful thriller, sucking you into its drama even though you may have figured out where the story's going.I'm going with three out of five for Kurbaan; it's a compelling thriller that doesn't shy away from touching prickly issues.

You haven't watched a more profound, a more thought-provoking, a more dramatic story on this subject before KURBAAN. It's not just the most powerful film to come out of Dharma Productions, it's the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry this year, thus far.KURBAAN tries to penetrate into the psyche of not just the terrorist, but also someone who has been a helpless spectator all this while. This film is sure to spark off discussions and debates, although it must also be noted that it doesn't take sides or gets preachy. The film has a captivating plot, gripping screenplay, super performances and a climax that shakes you up completely. Watching this movie should be on top of your agenda this week.

Karan Johar’s story has gravitas. Rensil D’Silva’s narrative keeps you on the edge of the seat, for most of the time. Salim Suleiman’s music score has a melodious feel. Hemant Chaturvedi’s cinematography serenades both Delhi, where the Saif-Kareena romance blossoms and New York, where it cracks up. And the performances by almost all the lead characters are gritty. If Om Puri paints a chilling picture of the terrorist who masquerades in the garb of the commoner and Kiron Kher makes the myth of a suicide bomber plausible, then Viveik Oberoi lends credibility to the voice of the progressive Muslim. But it is the chemistry between Saif and Kareena that lights up the film as the duo bring to life a picture of passion and restraint as the doomed lovers. But Kurbaan sure does strike a chord and sets you thinking on stuff that needs to be sorted out before the new world order – a more humanitarian, less violent – sets in. Don’t miss it.

For once here's a film that does not feel long despite the two hours and 40 minutes. And if that's not enough to get you interested, here's the clincher. Kurbaan is bloody smart. In its taut screenplay, stylish photography and good performances by the cast, it keeps you engaged, does not insult your intelligence and avoids getting preachy. this one is executed like a classy Hollywood thriller, with some great moments of suspense, high drama, blood, gore and skin. Go watch Kurbaan, explore it, find your own points to agree, disagree, endorse, enjoy, debate and be angry about.Either way, you definitely cannot walk out without the film leaving an impression on you. And a strong one at that.

Kurbaan starts as a love story, swiftly changes identity to a social film and keeps the viewer engaged throughout with its thriller treatment. Sensibly the romance is kept short and succinct without losing out on the chemistry of the characters. Once the terrorist activity comes to forefront, the love story is fittingly given a backseat as the story intends to highlight and discuss serious issues related to global terrorism. And while dealing with dignified social concerns, the film doesn't compromise on entertainment by adapting a thrilling story-telling technique. The pacing is brisk with sufficient twist and turns never letting the viewer lose interest.Jihad is an outcome of selective thinking. Kurbaan is an outcome of sensitive filmmaking.

Kurbaan, produced by Karan Johar and directed by Rensil D’Silva, constructs this unimaginably tortured situation and then squanders it. The film has ambition but it is too flawed and simplistic to explore issues like religion, violence and the politics of terrorism with any conviction or gravitas. But the performances, melodious music and snazzy camerawork cannot camouflage Kurbaan’s specious logic and faulty writing.Clearly Rensil is a talent to watch. He isn’t afraid to take risks but his ambition and good intentions aren’t matched by the sophistication that this project required. Kurbaan is a disappointment.

KURBAAN is NEW YORK. But with a different set of actors. KURBAAN is also SHOOT ON SIGHT, again with different actors. The plot remains the same, the twists and turns fails to surprise you and the end is inevitable.Technically the movie is sound; acting wise, everyone chips in with a fine performance. The look, feel and action sequences are top class, but then you are not seeing anything new that has not been shown in the recent past. The above-mentioned films are just the recent references.Nothing adds up but for the hyped romance between Saif and Kareena. Both are in terrific form.

There is a consistent feeling of intrigue while you watch Kurbaan. Almost like a time bomb waiting to go off. Debutant director Rensil D'Silva's ability to maintain the intense graph of Kurbaan is the biggest highlight of this film.Kurbaan could have been a tighter and perhaps slightly more engrossing film. But considering it is the director's maiden effort – full marks to Rensil D'Silva. He does well to stay away from any frothy elements at the cost of sacrificing the mass entertainment value. It's mostly a gripping thriller with several shock moments. Give it a shot.

It is my humble suggestion that the makers of this film, Tum Mile go straight home and watch Sholay themselves. Some lessons in screenplay writing and basic shot-taking wouldn't hurt. The problem is there's not enough drama in the screenplay to begin with. The film's special effects are unimpressive, and the photography is uniformly flat. Tum Mile has a hummable score, but it doesn't succeed on most other counts. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Kunal Deshmukh's Tum Mile; you may survive the floods, but Emraan and Soha's bak-bak will most certainly kill you!

While KD succeeds in depicting the tiffs between the lovers, it's the disaster aspect that doesn't make much of an impact. That's because you strongly feel that the infamous Mumbai floods should've been given more prominence, instead of using it as a tool to take the story forward. KD has handled the love story very well. The tiffs between Emraan and Soha are so identifiable. The 'Dil Ibaadat' song in particular completely moves you. But how one wishes the film would've focussed more on the characters' attempts to escape or cope with the disaster or its aftermath.

Director Kunal Deshmukh returns after the success of Jannat. This time round, he sculpts an extremely mature and engrossing account of a mercurial relationship between an artist (Emraan Hashmi) and his muse (Soha Ali Khan). Now that's a love story that's been told before. But what makes Tum Mile alluring are the performances and the narrative structure: both innovative, multi-layered and show casing depth. But what really stands out in the film is the acting. Emraan and Soha create a chemistry that is brimming over with warmth and remains quite unpredictable till the very end. Go, get a taste of substantial Bollywood with Tum Mile: a story well told.

What's amazing is how their story and affection unfolds. The viewer feels the stifling iciness between the two in the first scene. Initially, she's a bit condescending while he's mostly awkward, which is easily believable for not all couples part as friends. Then as the story rewinds, we are familiarised to how they met, dated, began living-in, got intimate only to experience the not so pleasant side of a man-woman relationship.Despite the rich-poor stereotype, Deshmukh handles the frustrations and conflicts between two strong-willed, independent individuals with astounding realism.Ultimately, though, Tum Mile's true strength lies in the combined appeal and compelling performances of Emraan and Soha. Awe-inspiring it is not but engaging? By all means.

The basic problem with Tum Mile lies with its much-too-long flashback. Now this was never meant to be a disaster adventure film. But the romantic angle in the flashback is filled with the most done-to-death sequences. While the disaster angle is clearly a gimmick. And the lovers could very well have sorted out their differences on a station or an airport lounge, the film is engagingly shot. Tum Mile is eventually just another love story punctuated with some 26/7 sequences. Watch it only if you are a die hard Emraan Hashmi fan.

Tum Mile, ostensibly Bollywood's first disaster movie is superbly silly.Firstly, there simply isn't enough disaster here. There are a few ominous warnings of turbulence in the skies and some rainfall, but calamity doesn't hit until we are at the interval. This narrative isn't very engaging to begin with and it isn't helped by the singularly sullen performances by Soha and Emran. Both have proved themselves to be effective actors but as a romantic couple, they posses little charm. So you are counting the minutes till the water arrives. But director Kunal Deshmukh, who debuted with the crackling match-fixing film Jannat, isn't able to summon the horror and tragedy of that day.The special effects are tacky and the situations are ridiculous.

The story, like all Bhatt films is heavy on romance and the uneasy pain of loving and leaving. Given the backdrop of the deluge, director Kunal Deshmukh makes a valiant attempt of recreating the last moments of TITANIC. The scenes showing the floods are close to real and take you back in time when the streets became one big sea and the message at the end is "Stay indoors when it rains." Though the film does manage to tug at your heart the length is a big bother, a little snip here and a big cut there would have done wonders for this film. The lead pair of Emraan and Soha is fantastic.

About time filmmakers stopped second-guessing kids by making films they think children would like, instead of taking the trouble to find out what they indeed want to watch.Aao Wish Karein, inspired from the Tom Hanks starrer Big, is the kind of film its misguided makers seem convinced kids will enjoy. Good luck with that, considering it's a painfully predictable, sickeningly romantic, unfunny film that talks down to kids as if they're stupid little creatures who don't deserve anything smarter.I'm going with one out of five for director Glen Barretto's Aao Wish Karein; to be honest, I've seen fifth standard students put up school-plays more entertaining than this!

the film fails to decide its core audience. Is it a kiddie's flick or is it meant for the bada log? If so, there's too much of the baba log in the film (the children's track is too long) and too little of the adult stuff (like, how does a 12-turned-21 handle his hormones). This makes the film waddle in no-man's land. Obviously inspired by Tom Hanks 1988 classic (Big) that was nominated for two Oscars, the film lacks all the masala that made Penny Marshal's film such a winsome experience. Also, the romance between Aftab and Aamna is quite thanda. Thoda aur wish karein?

It's not sacrilegious if a film bears an uncanny resemblance to another film [it could be a coincidence], but films like these need to be well-structured and most importantly, supported by incredible actors who can make you believe in fairy tales. Also, the makers ought to take a stand at the very outset: Should it be targeted at kids or youth? You just cannot sit on the fence. In this case, you don't know if AAO WISH KAREIN is aimed at the kids or is it a breezy romantic flick, targeted at the youth. All said, AAO WISH KAREIN has some endearing moments, but not enough to salvage it.

Like the director's earlier films, Corporate, Traffic Signal and Fashion, his latest too is a slice-of-life drama about the characters and the way of life within the world he's chosen to set the film in. This time though, Bhandarkar ditches his trademark exposé approach and settles for an emotionally-manipulative tone instead.Because it's well-intentioned and settles for a hopeful message, you stay with the film despite the fact that it's never quite compelling. I'm going with a generous two-and-a-half out of five for director Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail. It's got its heart in the right place, but sometimes that's not enough.

It's the real world for Madhur Bhandarkar. And once again, he manages to create a hard-hitting canvas peopled with characters who manage to both disturb and touch your heart with their stories of distress. More importantly, the film raises important questions regarding our tardy legal system and calls for a complete redressal, if justice must prevail. Kudos to Bhandarkar for taking an ekdum different take on the notorious Indian jail. While he does not fail to depict the grime and the horror of the jail experience, he doesn't fall into the trap of delineating it in cliched terms. Almost all the characters are given a human face, despite their crimes. The first half of the film does take a bit long to build up, but the second half is a power-packed knock-out. Don't miss it.

Besides watching a thought-provoking story on celluloid, one has also come to expect incredible performances in a Madhur Bhandarkar movie. And JAIL too is embellished with superb performances from its key actors.JAIL transports you to a hitherto unknown world that most of us haven't seen and if this is its USP.In a nutshell, JAIL mirrors a reality in true Madhur Bhandarkar style. It's hard-hitting, it's compelling, it's thought-provoking. The efficient storyteller has the courage to speak a new language in every film and for that very reason, JAIL should be on your agenda.

The detailing is shoddy, the characters cardboard and the dialogue plain laughable. Jail is a formulaic, below average Bollywood headache, slowed down to lugubrious dullness. So much so that even ever-disastrous background score man Amar Mohile ditches his overloud hoo-ha for some insipid piano tinkling. Groan.Leave it be, this prison of cardboard and cliche. We all deserve better.

The writing by Madhur Bhandarkar, Manoj Tyagi and Anuradha Tiwari is genuine in terms of representing life inside jail. But come to think of it, with the prison premise being so often exploited in films, most of it is common knowledge to the audience unlike Bhandarkar brand of shocking revelations. In Jail , he falls short on detailing the internal intricacies of imprisonment and the story gets slack with no distinctive graph to the character conflicts. Compare Jail to Madhur Bhandarkar’s earlier works and you would be disappointed to a degree. Nevertheless, compare it to many other mediocre movies of today and Jail is still a step ahead. Jail is captivating but not consistently.

What is good about Jail is that it deals with human behaviour in a non-filmy manner, at each step showing Parag reacting to situations just like a man of his character would in real-life.But sadly, there are no real highs or lows in the film. The only high point is when Parag refuses to run away even when he has a good chance to. The prison life could also have been better researched than relying on clichés. But in the end, it's the story of Parag Dixit, and not his life in jail, after all.
