But 90 minutes is too long for a spoof. The jokes tend to get repetitive in the film's second half and the energy begins to wane. Fifteen minutes shorter, and a few indulgences less, this might have been an extraordinary watch. In its current form though, it's still a barrel of laughs. I'm going with three out of five and a thumbs up for director Shashanka Ghosh's Quick Gun Murugun. If all you're looking for is a relaxed time at the movies, then believe me, this is Good Fun Murugun.

The problem with QGM is that it is not half as good on celluloid as it sounds as an idea. To make a smooth transition from a TV filler to a full-length feature, QGM needed more than mere attitude. But it ends up feeling like a spoof of a spoof. The movie, though, has its moments. The action scenes occasionally raise a chuckle. In the climax, Murugan even grabs a bullet fired at him in his mouth. Some of the gags work. And Rajendra Prasad gets the protagonist's part right. His exchanges with Rambha offer the most endearing and hilarious moments of the film. When Dolly confesses having failed to win a beauty contest, he says, "It is not IAS. You can try again."You cannot blame director Shashanka Ghosh and writer Rajesh Devraj for not trying something different. They are bang on with the movie's looks. Too bad, the team fails to create its soul.

Welcome to the crazy, madcap world of QUICK GUN MURUGAN. In this film, the hero and villain are at loggerheads. The fight is between vegetarian and non-vegetarian [meals]. Here, the villain wants to make the best dosa in town and kidnaps women who have the perfect recipe for making delicious dosas. QUICK GUN MURUGAN is not the stereotypical movie, but it borrows from all stereotypical movies that made Indian cinema so distinct from rest of the world. The best part is, QUICK GUN MURUGAN is innovative. One sentence verdict? Try this dosa... it's delicious!

But lest you go in expecting some bawdy humour and slapstick comedy, be warned. QMG is not your typical slide-splitting, laugh-a-minute fare. And it definitely does not expect you to 'leave your brains behind'. The laughs do happen but more often you are left smiling at the intelligent dialogues and their allusions to cultural idiosyncrasies, the parodies and the sarcasm. From his two-minute life span on a music channel, Quick Gun Murugun has come a long way indeed and deserves this full length feature dedicated to our very own Indian Cowboy with a buckle to die for (Stylists, may I please have a replica of the same?!)On the whole, QMG is as delicious as Mrs Murugun's dosas. As Rice Plate would have said, "A1, Tip Top!"

A spoof doesn’t merely mean imitating and exaggerating clichés. It’s imperative that the output of the amplification be funny to pull-off a successful satire. The character Quick Gun Murugun (flamboyance of Clint Eastwood’s cowboy meeting the larger-than-life heroism of South Indian superstars) might appear interesting but all it does is resort to clichés on the excuse of spoof which amuses the least. So much of noise on the pretext of parody! We do mind it !

We thought it would be a fun film. Stupid stupid thought! The tale of the original Indian cowboy, inspired by the quintessential 'Bawliwud Ishtylish' hero, Quick Gun Murugan is light years away from being anything funny. What you've already seen of Quick Gun in trailers, is all that's worth seeing. Don't even bother watching the film. It will only spoil the character already created by Shah Rukh Khan in OSO years back.

Love Khichdi has style, wit and that dirty five-letter word, heart. In the latter part of the second half, the movie tends to drag. Perhaps trimming it by 15 minutes would have made it crisper; just like one of those dishes that Vir rustles up. Nonetheless, it's a swell date flick. And, like the film's protagonist, don't hesitate to lie if your partner predicts your sun sign wrong after the lights come on.

Try stretching a rubber band beyond a point and it's bound to snap. Try stretching a waferthin story and it's bound to blow apart too. That's precisely the problem with LOVE KHICHDI. Frankly, LOVE KHICHDI is a collage of romantic moments assembled by director Srinivas Bhashyam. LOVE KHICHDI looks at the various women who flit in and out of the protagonist's life. It's a metro-centric concept that could've worked well if [a] the assorted women wouldn't appear and disappear randomly and [b] the narrative had been limited to 1.30 hours, instead of 2 + hours.
These two factors make this khichdi far from appetising.

It's really unclear what writer-director Srinivas Bhashyam wanted to show in this sleazy film. Love Khichdi is anything but a cute love story. But the weakest link in this whole enterprise is our leading man, completely miscast in this role. He tries to be funny but falls terribly short. He doesn't even look like the 26-year-old character that he's playing. He looks much older.Saurabh Shukla is probably the saving grace of this tasteless comedy. But he's still not enough for you to make the trip to watch Love Khichdi.

What makes Love Khichdi worse is the fact that it's shockingly chauvinistic. Hooda's character seems to be a figment of some teenager's hormonal imagination put on the screen because someone had a lot of money to burn. The whole domestic help fantasy is especially in bad taste.Love Khichdi is supposed to be a comedy. Unfortunately the film takes itself seriously and that is where it fails miserably.Love Khichdi is so terrible, you wouldn't want anyone to know you've watched it.

If you do find yourself laughing on a few occasions, it's mostly out of disbelief at just how shockingly bad this film turns out to be. The acting is an assembly line of over-the-top, ham jobs from a cast that is possibly the most ineffective you've ever seen. A special mention of Aftab Shivdasani, Chunky Pandey and Vrajesh Hirjee who take the cake for being the most annoying actors on screen.Contrived and unimaginative, this remake pales in comparison to Death At A Funeral. I'm going with half, yes just half out of five for Daddy Cool; it's a dead duck of a film that ought to be promptly buried just like its protagonist.

The movie's whacky ensemble includes a struggling writer (Shetty) who is bullied by his wife, a character whose wife suspects he is sleeping around and a cousin whose boyfriend (Aftab) has mistakenly taken hallucinogenic pills. But none of them are as interesting or intriguing as the pint-sized stranger (Rajpal Yadav) who walks in and lovingly fondles the coffin. It is his disclosures that lead to a situational comedy that leaves you with half a smile after the show is over.

Director K Murali Mohan Rao has helmed several interesting films in the past, but what's this? Sure, DADDY COOL has a few entertaining moments, like the one when Rajpal Yadav reveals the secret [that Sharat Saxena was gay and Rajpal and he were lovers], but the remaining sub-plots fail to cut ice. Adding multiple sub-plots is fine as long as each sub-plot has something fascinating to say, but that's missing here. Even the end is so bizarre, with members of this detached family suddenly professing love for one another.

Starring some of Bollywood's most reliable funny men, Daddy Cool is endurable upto the interval. Half way through the film you feel it's like any other mundane comedy that's okay while it lasts. But the quality of houmour goes horribly down hill with every passing minute in the second half. What works as a sex comedy in one languge, needn't be equally funny in another. This movie is totally uncool.

TOSS has an interesting thought that the urban junta would like to watch, but the screenplay blows the story to smithereens. This thriller thrills in bits and spurts and the final outcome is least exciting. The culprit here, like most films helmed by debutantes, is that form overpowers content to such an extent that what you get to watch is a good looking film with minimal substance to offer. In a nutshell, the subject goes for a toss in TOSS.

While the film starts off very crisply without wasting any time to get to the point, after a while it starts dangling around. Some utterly unnecessary song-dance-drama and stupid dream sequences make the proceedings slack and lousy. The interval point is too contrived and there are too many loose ends to the suspense unfolding. The second half gains pace but is stretched so long that you lose interest. The editing is too lazed out for a thriller and the sepia tone cinematography appears dull and dated. Though the film reaches an interesting climax, too much harm has been done by then.

Toss is the A to Z of a rambling screenplay and tacky production values. One moment three guys are chasing one. Cut to the latter beating his chest in front of a Cross of Christ, 'Kill me, kill me.' Next scene, you have a stock-withdrawn mother emphasizing on the exceptional status of a live-in relationship to her unusually panting son.Toss is a text-book demonstration of appalling, over-the-top and awful performances. Not one actor in a cast of mostly lesser known faces project anything remotely to an expression. In all likelihood, this is not the last of the worst I've witnessed. Nevertheless, it's neither head nor tails (read stars) for Toss.

Burning issues like farmers' suicides and oppression by corrupt zamindars are only fleetingly mentioned, never adequately addressed in Kissan which shamelessly describes itself as a tribute to the farmer, and even goes so far as to end with a Daler Mehndi-remix video of the popular Mere desh ki dharti number from Upkaar. Because the acting is uniformly uninspired, and the direction mostly flat, and because this film doesn't even have its heart in the right place, I'm going with one out of five for director Puneet Sira's Kissan; watch it at your own risk.

Two surprises...
* One, KISAAN is the present-day interpretation of Manoj Kumar's classic UPKAR. With changes, of course.
* Two, going by the promos, the general feeling is that KISAAN is a shining example of regressive cinema. It isn't!
But despite the similarities, KISAAN works in most parts because it's engaging. The drama, even though predictable, is well handled and keeps you engrossed at several points. Final word? Try out this desi stuff.

Imagine a blind person carrying off those hazardous, death-defying stunts... Just that effort deserves an applause. Now let's come to the point. SHADOW is more of a showreel to project the acting abilities of Nasser Khan, so, expectedly, the writing takes a backseat. The screenplay is very '70s and '80s, reminiscent of the masala films we enjoyed so much then. It's just that times have changed and so have the tastes of a big chunk of moviegoers. Yet, there's no denying that there still exists a sizable chunk of movie-going audience that relishes masala films and SHADOW is targeted at them.

Time to take stock of the ubiquitous Bollywood cliche. Why is it cops reach the area of crime quite late in the day? Case in point Mr underutilised reporter Rahul Kapoor (Milind Soman)! But if there's something that's quite clear in this blurred Shadow, it's Naseer Khan (Arjun Sherawat), who despite being physically challenged in real life manages to carry out stunts with ease and confidence in reel life. Yes, he refuses to play blind on screen. Kudos to that for sure! As for his performance, it remains shadowy, not just for his robotic dialogue delivery but also his complete misfit as the lover boy (yes, there are moments when you wish Milind Soman wooed our super cop) and as a diehard vigilante masquerading as a killer. Cinema doesn't work on human bravado alone.

While it's admirable that the film doesn't take sides when pointing out where the real problem lies, Sikandar suffers from the sudden shift in tone – it goes from a standard morality tale in its first half to a cheesy thriller in its second. There is also the issue of the unforgivable, over-simplistic climax in which the leads are absolved of responsibility for their crimes. What's more the film's jarring background score and sluggish pace also act as party poopers. On the up-side, Sikandar is memorable for its compelling cinematography of this scenic land in all its lush beauty. But sadly that is not enough to do the trick. Both leads – Parzaan Dastur and particularly Ayesha Kapoor – appear too raw to pull off consistent performances, and the plot holes are too many to ignore.

SIKANDAR has a refreshingly different story to tell, since themes like the one here have rarely been told on the Hindi screen before. But how one wishes the screenplay would do justice to the thought. For, the film holds your attention in bits and spurts, not in totality. Also, the culmination to this story falls short of expectations. In a nutshell, SIKANDAR had the potential to strike a chord, but it leaves your hand midway. The problem is that the story suddenly moves into the suspense-thriller genre and that robs the film of its originality. Even before you're told who the culprit is, you've guessed it already thanks to the been-there-seen-that kind of situations that this film relies on.

Kashmir is changing and so is the cinema around it. Of course, you do have mandatory militants, the army, peace battering politicos, religious heads in a small town of J&K, but you also have fourteen-year-old Sikandar Raza. No bhashan on cross border terror, war, militancy. Watch it for the strong message summed up in the final act with simplicity: say no to guns. Watch it for the fast paced and conclusive second half. And finally, watch it for the special bonding between the tussi-ja-rahe-ho charmer (of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai fame) turned into a curious teen with a dark side, Parzan, and his conscience keeper, Nasreen.

The film's plot is engaging, and most of the twists are genuinely authentic. However, far too much time is spent on building up silent moments where nothing really happens. As a result, when the plot does eventually unfold, it seems rushed. The climax is quite a doozy, the final twist really not clicking into place, being untrue to its characters, and leaving you with far more unanswered questions than answers. And as for the final sequence with all things returning to normal and football as usual, it boggles the mind. That can be said about all of Sikandar. While the film is pretty by default and has a few pleasant moments, it seems far longer than it is and doesn't quite add up. Clearly Piyush meant well, though, and it is always good to see Bollywood experimenting with children's cinema -- I just wish they wouldn't keep treating kids like kids.

Indeed Kashmir has a multitude of issues that need to be resolved. Among them is the alienation of young school-going boys and girls in the face of the ongoing anarchy in the state.Sikandar, directed by Piyush Jha, hopes to address and tries to tackle the politics behind this rather sensitive issue. This is probably where the film fails – because it is far too slow for a suspense movie and has too many loopholes for its human-interest angle.Sikandar could have been much better had it stuck to its human-interest angle.

The film attempts to be a suspense thriller under the garb of social drama. But somewhere the suspense treatment is marred with too many loopholes while the social theme is too shallow. Though it had good scope, the narrative doesn’t delve deep into the history of Kashmir leaving its characters one-dimensional. With the Kashmir issue being blared up in dailies, one is expected to have a basic understanding of the political backdrop.

You've seen all of it before. There's a slim chance this film might not have been a complete write-off if the acting was a little inspired. But what are the chances of that?Indifferently directed by a filmmaker who thinks fancy South African locales and glossy production values can make up for the absence of a sensible script, this movie is a challenge to sit through.Sexist and offensive in portions, but plain dumb for the most part, Life Partner can be safely missed. It's loud. It's over the top. It has Genelia forcing you to reach out for earplugs, ever so often. And yet it's easy timepass.Credit it to the comic timing of Govinda who manages to make slapstick seem funny, despite his guest appearance kind of role.Or credit it to a mere peppering of some really funny sequences, specially a cameo from Jagdeep who steals the show with mere grunts and half-sentences. Actually speaking, Fardeen and Tusshar too manage to hook your attention with their exuberance.Intermittently light and breezy, Life Partner makes for weekend viewing.

LIFE PARTNER isn't innovative or ground-breaking, but it's interesting and entertaining. One may assume that it's a nonsensical comedy, but it isn't. Instead, it's a 'family film' [a popular term for socials/paarivaarik films within the industry]. It gives you a sneak peak into the lives of two couples -- one, who believes in love marriage and the other, who believes in arranged marriage. LIFE PARTNER entertains, makes you laugh [at even silly jokes] and keeps you hooked for most parts of the film. It's only the climax that acts as a spoilsport. To sum up, LIFE PARTNER carries no buzz and also the baggage of zilch expectations. But this film springs a pleasant surprise. You leave the auditorium with a smile, not a smirk!

Under normal circumstances, this would seem like a no-nonsense film about genuine issues. But in Jaffrey's human zoo, it's impossible to grasp anything without a pinch of salt. For one, characters don't react. They scream. Correction, shriek. And all that ear-splitting humour gets jarring after a while. Secondly, Life Partner successfully establishes the crisis of the newly-weds but ends up sorting things between them in a hopelessly shoddy and unconvincing fashion, resorting to hare-brained twists and ridiculous logic.

It's fairly easy to write off a film like this. The plot is another predictable attempt at recreating the success of No Entry. And quite frankly most of the jokes are very silly. But there is still something, which prevents the movie from falling apart. The production values are tacky and music is nothing to hum about. Even the climax is predictable. Yet Life Partner, is something you can watch with your family. It's far from smart, but trust me a lot of people out there are going to find it too damn funny.

Genelia’s irksome act irritates beyond the boundaries of her character as her nagging gets on your nerves. Her dialogue delivery no more sounds cute, as she cuts out each word from her lines and individually stresses on them. Fardeen Khan looks literally harrowed. Prachi Desai gets into the idiot box family drama mode. A topless Tushar Kapoor is clearly avoidable. Amrita Rao and item girl do not suit in the same line. Govinda exudes immense screen presence despite having less screen time. Anupam Kher is repetitive while Darshan Zariwala hams.Keep your partner away from this and life will be happier.

Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey is a film you'll either love or passionately despise. It's an unpredictable crime drama that combines violence and dark humor in a manner that's reminiscent of the films of Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie and the Coen Brothers. And yet Kaminey is so original and inventive in the manner in which it takes Bollywood's favorite formula - twin brothers - and turns it on its head. With unchoreographed action scenes and dances, and long portions with no background score at all, it's a wildly imaginative, original offering from a fearless filmmaker who doesn't insult your intelligence. Kaminey boasts the best performance you will see by an ensemble cast in a long time, and that includes even the bit players. As Charlie would say: It's a MUFT-WATCH.

Kaminey is a smart and balsy film that brings Hollywood to Bollywood, reminiscent of the adventurism of Quentin Tarantino's action thrillers which catapult the viewer into the dark, violent world of crime and criminals, leaving you no time to blink or breathe easy. More importantly, Kaminey is the first film which also credits its viewers with some intelligence. It demands your unbridled attention from the word GO and allows you to sit back only at your own peril. It teases you with its smartness and constantly challenges you to keep pace with the breathless tenor of the drama that unfolds through fast cuts, dizzy hand-held camera angles and a dark, brooding ambience. Now Bhardwaj picks up characters that we have witnessed on the Hindi screen before, but executes it like Tarantino and Guy Ritchie do. He creates a film that's so different from movies we've witnessed thus far. Let's say, KAMINEY is bold, stark, funny and unpredictable and that's what works in its favour. Okay, we've seen Shahid pitching in a sincere act in his earlier films, but KAMINEY should catapult him to superstardom. His double role in KAMINEY is exemplary. I wish to add that KAMINEY is not the usual masala film. Sure, it's a well-made film, but there's no spoon feeding here. One has to be attentive, very attentive to grasp the goings-on and also the twists in the tale. To cut it short, KAMINEY is a film with an attitude. Like it or leave it, but you'd never be able to ignore it. Word from the wise: Go for this hatke experience!

One that then ties you to the edge of your seat and forcibly pins you there and pounces on you, eventually leaving you sitting in the dark, drained and grinning and more satisfied than a film has any business leaving you. This, ladies and gentlemen, is that kind of ride.So delicious is the movie's gradual unravelling that I refuse outright to let you in on the plot itself -- an enthralling tale of drugs, deceit, dingbats and dead-ringers -- because you need to discover this on your own.The result is startlingly clever, an innovative film with genuine surprises. Kaminey is the kind of film whose success we ought all pray for, because it'll prove smart cinema works.

On second thoughts the narrative of Kaminey dominated by gang-war and drug mafia doesn’t sound absolutely innovative. The story-telling involves a multitude of characters, none of them being conventionally introduced or established. You are expected to acclimatize with each of them on your own and learn their conflicts, as the story progresses promptly. But Vishal Bharwadwaj applies a complete different language of cinema to make the film look fascinating. The second half tends to stretch with too many twists in the plot to reach a customary climax. Otherwise Kaminey is long, dark and handsome.

I dare say it will be a long time, if ever, before Shahid gets to display himself as a complete actor again. There's magic in the film, which hooks you from the beginning. The editing is razor sharp, the drama is top class, the performances super duper and the background score 'with it'.If it is not going over the top, KAMINEY can be bracketed as the SHOLAY of our times, Sweety Bhope is the Basanti while Shahid's Guddu and Charlie as Jai and Veeru.Statutory warning: If you watch it once, you will want to watch it again!
