New York wants to be a meaningful film about a relevant issue, but the makers don't seem to have the courage in their convictions. As a result, it's evenly 'commercialised' with all the trappings of a typical Bollywood potboiler. In the end, the only bits that engage are the early campus scenes where all three actors are only required to play versions of themselves.I'm going with a generous two out of five for director Kabir Khan's New York. But watch the excellent Pakistani film Khuda Kay Liye to see how a terrific script and convincing performances can go a long way in telling a similar story. This film, unfortunately, lacks both.

NEW YORK, helmed by Kabir Khan, attempts to be as real as possible. A tale of friendship, with terrorism as the wallpaper, NEW YORK hits you like a ton of bricks at several points in the narrative. In fact, there was a possibility that NEW YORK may turn out to be a dry experience, a documentary perhaps, but the drama is so well structured and so gripping that you get sucked into the world of Sam, Omar and Maya from its inception. On the whole, NEW YORK is amongst the finest films produced by Yash Raj. At the box office, there's no stopping this one. Go for it now!

Since the fun and games of the first half build up to a gripping climax which sees Katrina pitching in the best performance of her entire career, while John showcases a side of him that lives beyond the muscle and brawn. But the show stopper of the film is Neil who creates such a winsome character in Omar, torn between his conflicting loyalties -- to friendship and sanity -- and the pain of an unreciprocated love for `katto' Katrina. And how can we forget Irrfan, ever dependable and forever watchable, with a special ability to add that extra something to any and every role. Absolutely delightful, with his distaste for pasta! Go for it. It's topical, meaningful and entertaining, all at the same time now!

Director Kabir Khan's new film tries hard to make a point, loses it in a weak, seemingly unending plot executed by a group of pretty performers each competing for a Worst Actor Award, and finally ends by spelling the name of President Barack Obama as Barrack. And all this nonsense in a film exasperatingly infatuated with slow-motion, so that even the lousy climax takes a while to kick in.Shall we talk of plot? Oh, let's not. Suffice it to say that this is a dreadfully weak rehash of Anurag Basu's gripping Gangster

New York opens on an intriguing note with Omar’s attempts to infiltrate into Sameer’s life. The ensuing chemistry between the characters keeps you riveted till the movie takes an interesting (though palpable) twist at the interval point. As the last frame closes amidst the Yash Raj mascot of maple leaves, you just wish the film had a lot more grit, the characters had a lot more depth and the treatment had a lot more sensitivity. Alas New York fails to break new grounds on that note.

When a hardcore commercial flick gets a standing ovation and a huge round of applause at the end of the show, you know that there is something definitely right that the director has done. In this regard, Kabir Khan can take a bow because he has done exceedingly well in making a film that is not frivolous, has a message and still carries enough commercial ingredients to reach out to masses as well as classes. His "New York" is a gripping dramatic thriller that has all the trappings to finally end the drought that Bollywood has been facing for an entire year so far.

Indeed, Kabir Khan has a good story to tell and narrates it quite effectively. However, he often resorts to clichés especially in cinematography and the plot.I would not go to the extent of saying that this is an exceptionally brilliant film. But as someone who knows something about Bollywood films and entertainment in India, I can say New York is a film with a heart. It is a film that gives us hope and reminds us that there is always a room for a little bit of forgiveness, compassion and love. Just for telling us that, I'd say you watch New York this Friday.

New York for Oscars. Definitely. Take a bow Kabir Khan. Your work is excellent. Kabir, who says, he was in the US two days before 9/11 and saw first-hand the chaos that followed was stirred enough to work on this film. His second name is Khan! Immediately after the Twin Towers were targeted, the FBI picked up innocent civilians bearing Muslim names as suspects. What happened in captivity? Kabir tells a poignant tale.

Kabir Khan deserves credit for directing New York with such dexterity and precision. There's no denying that, finally after a long time, probably the first time in 2009, a movie can be termed as a must-watch. The first half is good, the initial few reels are fun-filled, the characters are established pretty quickly and the pace is good . The well narrated first half is followed by an equally fascinating and enthralling second, there sure is a dip in pace post-interval and a few unnecessary sequences could have been edited out, but then no movie is completely flawless.

This fourth installment in the Terminator series has almost none of that fearless spirit that made the first two movies – particularly T2 – so much fun. It's remarkably shot, though, in varying shades of grey, khaki and sepia; and it knocks you on the head with its never-ending assault of high-octane action. If that's your thing, give this film a chance.I'll go with two out of five and at best an average rating for Terminator Salvation.Judging by Christian Bale's permanent scowl in this film, I can only assume it was as difficult making this film as it was watching it.

If the Dark Knight overshadowed him in his last outing as Batman, then here, it is man-machine, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) who manages to walk away with more applause as compared to John Connor, the savior of the human race in this indeterminate war between man and machine. The film scores heavily in the action sequences and uses them effectively to tell the story of survival and hope. The screenplay may be weak, but you actually don't miss the spoken word in this high-octane drama that throws up a new hero in Marcus Wright.

For people interested in things going boom, this movie promises a great deal of satisfaction. The special effects department deserves massive props for generating so much artifice that looks and sounds believable. If you're in the mood for a non-threatening adrenaline shot, this is your best option this weekend. This movie does a good job of embracing the mythology of the franchise so while fans won't be disappointed, even newbies should be able to find satisfaction in the mayhem that unfolds onscreen.

What makes the film worth a watch inspite of the drawbacks are its superb climax and groundbreaking special effects and graphics. Watch our for the T-1000 Terminator making a come-back in the film towards the end (special appearance). The action scenes seem shockingly true and wont let you even bat an eye-lid while they are on. The war movie setting also gives the series a brand new look. The film’s metallic grey look also works in its favour.Terminator Salvation is an all machine show with very little emotion and humour to it but that shouldn’t keep you away from the film... it’s a superb watch for its special effects and sleek action... tons and tons of it.

If you haven't seen the other movies which is unlikely you can still watch this one. It'll leave you with just a few holes to fill and that's easily done with a good dose of a Terminator marathon. This is one of those action movies that just have to be watched on the big screen. If you have a home theater, a word of advice, volume has to be cranked to the max. When you walk out of that theater, give your brain a few minutes to reboot, trust me you'll need it.

To be sure, Terminator Salvation boasts all the sound and fury ensured by a mega-budget. After a point though the techno-gimmickry palls. Moreover, the overindulgence of close-ups and the grey-brown colour scheme merely add to the gloom-doom scenario. Even more so than its predecessors, all showcasing Arnold Schwarzenegger, this revival is obsessed with hardware rather than the heart. The A-list actors deserved better treatment from the director. Clearly, Salvation is only in the Terminator’s mind.

Sadly, PAYING GUESTS stands on a waferthin plot, although Paritosh tries hard to add meat to the skeletal body. The film doesn't have the power to hold your attention for the next 2 hours, although it does [intermittently] make you smile or break into a guffaw.PAYING GUESTS fails to deliver thanks to a poor screenplay. Barring the four heroes and the landlords , the remaining characters in the film just don't work. The four leading ladies have nothing worthwhile to do and even the negative forces here are wasted. Final word? This comedy is more of a tragedy... for its viewers!

Everything about this film feels recycled - the juvenile plot, the tired jokes, even the performances by the leads. You've seen this kind of film many times before and there's virtually nothing novel being offered here.Paying Guests is a rather painful picture that completely fails to even engage you. You couldn't care less what happens to the characters in the end. Sadly, they all go home smiling. You wish you could too.A thumbs-down and one out of five for director Paritosh Painter's Paying Guests. This film is strictly for those who enjoy inflicting pain on themselves.

It's a completely chaotic story that keeps hurtling towards doom from the word go. Presumably a comedy, the film actually ends up making you cry -- in sheer frustration -- rather than send you in splits. The jokes are in terrible taste, where even rape is trivialised, and the actors sleepwalk their way through most of the film. Come on guys, exercise some quality control.

How does one critique a movie like Paying Guest without labelling it crass, sexist and mildly misogynistic? It can't be done. Let's see, they make fun of South Indians (Paintal's ridiculous accent), people with speech impediments (Chunky Pandey's ridiculous accent), women (Talpade and Jaffrey's ridiculous accents) and attempt to wrap it all up with a sequence that alludes to the famous scene set in a play from Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.

Stale jokes, unimaginative writing and stereo typical characters rather caricatures make it a pain to sit through even its two hours running time. The music is functional while dialogues are full of double innuendo. The climax is a direct lift of cult classic comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. Also while watching the film one can easily make out the almost the entire film seems to have been shot in and around Subhash Ghai owned Whistling Woods International in Mumbai’s Film City passing it off as Bangkok.Paying Guests is low in content aiming for cheap laughs. But if that’s your idea of entertainment then enter at your own risk.

Directed by Gavin Hood, the South African filmmaker behind the excellent Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, this movie has a surprisingly uneven tone, but makes no bones about the fact that it's going for the excited child in you. So if you enjoy watching trucks being blown up and grown men stabbing each other with their claws, this film can be pretty good fun.I'm going with a generous three out of five for X-Men Origins: Wolverine; you can be sure more X-Men spin-offs are on their way.

Director Gavin Hood goes back to the nineteenth century to trace the origins of Wolverine's super powers along with with his weltanshaung (read worldly despair).End result? A visually overpowering, high testosterone prequel to Marvel Comic's popular super hero.Go for Jackman's restraint and chutzpah and for the stunning action sequences which include a dizzy interlude where Wolverine jumps from a truck onto a helicopter, only to slice off its rotor blades with his claws and then walk off while it explodes. Kinda cool and king-size. All you miss is some substance and meaning behind the mayhem.

X-Men has its share of high-octane action as one would expect from it but lack of originality and excess of cliché leads to disappointment. The story, treatment, characters, injection of pathos in the script... everything seems generic, including the hyper sensitization of the film’s main character Wolverine. This ones X-tra sensitive instalment of the X-Men series... you can afford to X-cuse yourself from watching it.

The first movie (and the following parts) is a lesson in politics and our fear of the unknown. X-Men Origins however reduces this large complex web of issues into a simplistic story of a man out to get the killers of his wife.Having watched and loved the first three movies, Wolverine comes across as a bit of a letdown. Half way into the films, when the best action sequence is over – the one where he brings down the chopper – you actually begin to lose interest in Wolverine's story.Watch this movie only if you're a Hugh Jackman fan. X-Men fans are likely to get disappointed.

The film bears an uncanny resemblance to Ramgopal Varma's immensely likable RANGEELA and Yash Raj's utterly forgettable AAJA NACHLE. No issues if LET'S DANCE seeks inspiration from elsewhere [coincidence?], but in an effort to showcase Gayatri's dances, the remaining aspects take a backseat. The dances appeal, but the love story doesn't. And the crime angle, injected in the plotline, is a big bore. On the whole, LET'S DANCE is too ordinary, with its share of limitations.

The film is actually sweet and sensitive and gently tugs at your heart with the recognisable stories of the dreamers who make up the fabric of Mumbai. The actors too play their part well, though one wishes the music and the dancing had more verve in it. Specially since the sundry reality shows on television have already showcased the wealth of dancing talent that throbs in anonymous India. A little more polish, a little more zing and you could have had a decent musical at hand.

The film is high on dance but low on emotional connect. There’s a dance at the drop of a hat and then a song at the blink of an eye. The direction appears corny at several instances like when the couple fancies Nasik dhol dancers in background as cupid strikes. The music isn’t bad but lacks soul. The songs stay with you till their runtime after which there’s no recall value. The writing is conventional and some characterizations are even flawed like RJ who is principled at the start but is shown a philanderer soon after. The tempo picks up only in the final reels but the climax is long-drawn-out.

The leading lady appears to have given this role her all but since the film lives and dies with her performance and her character's journey, she doesn't quite prove up to the task. She dances, but doesn't own a single move that looks capable of sticking in a viewer's head. Being weighed down by lengthy dialogues that she clearly couldn't keep pace with (as evidenced by the tedious dubbing) doesn't help. The effort is clearly visible which might be part of the problem, because even the casual movie viewer can probably tell when someone is trying too hard.

KAL KISSNE DEKHA walks on a tight rope. The writers could've explored the concept to the optimum, making their imagination run wild. But what eventually unfolds is just not exciting. It catches your attention at times, but gives away later. On the whole, KAL KISSNE DEKHA has a great body [grandiose production values], but lacks soul. In terms of packaging and styling Kal Kissne Dekha is stuck in the OTT 90s. The music is melodious but the songs crop up at all wrong places. You know the direction is listless when audiences can sense the arrival of a song in the plot. As the first release post the multiplex strike, Kal Kissne Dekha is more like a film from the past than a futuristic one. Sitting through this slight film (barely touches the hour-and-a-half mark and still manages to feel too long) one is forced to wonder what prompted the lead actresses to sign on for this project. Boredom? A fat pay cheque? An empty box on their career checklist? Coercion? A contract that needed to be honoured?.As redeeming qualities go, this movie has none. It sounds like a decent idea and perhaps there is a good movie somewhere in the ether with this exact same premise. Bride Wars is not that film.
